Benedict Cumberbatch might be the man of the moment now, but the actor has admitted that it wasn't always that way after admitting to failing to land a role in a James Bond video game.

Recalling the days when he was just starting out as an actor, Benedict, who was spotted filming Sherlock before he went on his promotional tour for Star Trek: Into Darkness, told US talk show host, David Letterman on his Late Show:

"When I got to the audition, there were men in their 40s in full dinner jackets. So I go in in casual wear and I thought, 'I'll shake it up', thinking there'll be lots of movement and action because it's a Bond character."

Going on to explain what he meant by "shaking it up," Benedict continued:

“So I started to throw myself around the room and over sofas and doing lots of Walther PPK poses… and that's not a euphemism. And I didn't get a call, I'm still waiting. It didn't go well.”

Not sure, was it supposed to be just 'a' role in a Bond game i.e. some supporting character or villain? Did Cumberbatch on the spot decide to throw in his head for the lead and do all the PPK-acty-dangerous-tactical stuff while the actual role didn't call for it?

Interesting. I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness yesterday, and the film only reinforced my view that Benedict Cumberbatch would make a very good Bond villain, rather than Bond. It would be a pity if his earlier audition antics made the Bond producers reluctant to hire him - although I suspect given his profile now, they would set that aside.

Also - and if you've seen or are going to see it you might not agree with me -what struck me, apart from the references back to earlier Trek films and TV episodes, were the similarities, presumably unintentional, with Into Darkness and another non Trek movie. Consider:- we have a villain, a rogue agent who turns on his employers, who commits acts of terrorism. One of these acts kills someone close to Jim Kirk. The villain's name is a cover name. He has a personal agenda. I could go on.

Do these snippets make you think of a James Bond movie of recent vintage?

Cumberbatch really nailed the villain in 'STID' (I don't think I can remember so much secrecy over a villain and people not wanting to spoilt it for others in a film!) and would love to see him up against Bond, but hopefully as some power-mad villain and not, as you say, a Silva-clone and ex-MI6 agent gone bad.

I enjoy Cumberbatch's work in the Sherlock series and I think he would make a great Bond villain, even a recurring villain. I'm looking forward to Star Trek into Darkness.
