Movie studio MGM said on Tuesday it expects to release the next James Bond movie within three years, and hopes to announce soon a new director after Sam Mendes decided to move on.

In a conference call with investors, MGM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber said the studio was developing the screenplay for the next, 24th movie in the 50-year-old franchise about the British secret agent.

"We are very excited about the franchise, we look forward to announcing a director soon," Barber said.

"We are currently developing the screenplay and working with our partners. We look forward to developing the script soon and signing a director. We are hoping within the next 3 years it will be released," Barber added.

He gave no details on casting but Daniel Craig has already signed on for two more films in the lead role as the suave 007 agent.

The 2012 Bond film "Skyfall," starring Craig, made $1.1 billion at the global box office and impressed critics. But Britain's Mendes said earlier this month that he wanted to focus on his theatre projects for the foreseeable future.

Barber said Mendes "did an amazing job on 'Skyfall'. We are very thankful for the work that he did."

Privately-held MGM jointly produced "Skyfall" with Sony Corp's movie studio arm.

MGM said on Monday that "Skyfall" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" had helped bring a three-fold increase in its 2012 net income.

"Within the next 3 years" starting when? From today? So Bond 24 could be released in early 2016?

Relating to the discussion on the other thread, this seems to indicate that 2015 is a more likely possibility than 2014.

Not sure how I feel about this.

Agreed.  We're definitely looking at a 2015 release at this point.  I was always skeptical of a 2014 release, simply because it seems like EON and Craig despise Quantum of Solace so much, and they always blame a lack of time to get everything done before filming, that I couldn't see them going back to a 2-year schedule right away.  Hopefully we get a better film than what followed the last three year gap.

The writers strike is more to blame on that. Two years could be enough to have a decent film. On the other hand, they had four years and ended with Skyfall script...

Well, as long as we are informed that the wheels are in motion and the dedication and team is there to make this another successful, well-made Bond film, I will wait 3 years I suppose.

Obviously it depends on what they call soon, but it makes me feel as though the producers have a director in their sights.

This is very disappointing news. It is one thing if the script Logan is developing is a disappointing one and they start from scratch but 2016 (a four year gap, again) is too far, particularly if that's the ASAP scenario. So disappointing to hear this schedule after Skyfall was such a critical, commercial and fan success. I wonder if Bond 24 will be Craig's swansong if it takes this long to be released.

Keep in mind its 2016 at the latest, not that it'll actually be released in 2016. I think it really depends on how soon they get a director on board.

I could be wrong but I read the quote as a "We are aiming for three years (from now)." I hope you are right. I was under the impression that pre-production began last year, so an aim for three years from now surprised me.

I feel like they wouldn't be announcing a director soon if it's not out until 2015.

To me this says late 2015, which is what I expected.

I really couldn't imagine them starting to film this year and the film out the end of next.

Logan seems to be moving right along with things, so all that's left is to find a director so they can begin scouting locations. I'm optimistic.

So end of 2014 it is. They'll have a director, have scouted locations and have finished the script by the close of this year.

They'll probably start shooting in Jan/Feb of 2014 and release it at the end of 2014, going by Skyfall's template.

At least...that's what i'm hoping! They won't leave it till 2016, Craig is ageing fast and they don't really have time to hang about.

I think financially-strapped MGM would like the next one sooner rather than later, but EON is the production company, and it seems that a two-year schedule is tight for them.  After QOS premiered, Michael Wilson was quoted as saying he was very tired and needed three years or so to recharge his creative batteries.  MGM previoously spoke about having the next Craig film in two years, and they can pressure the filmmakers to go into production to meet that time frame, but in the end, EON has to feel ready to proceed.  It sounds from this announcement that MGM accepts that the production company wants an additional year.

I can't understand this optimism for 2014. Why would Barber tell MGM investors 'within 3 years' if the film was coming out next year?

I know - keep thinking that I must have missed some detail. I've listened to the whole conference call and don't think that I have.

They wouldn't be hoping to announce a director "soon" if the film isn't going to be released for nearly three years.

2014 is definitely doable, especially if Logan's script is as far along as rumours suggest; announcing a director soon would also point to a late 2014 release being possible.

However, 'within 3 years' sounds like late 2015, and 'soon' could mean a month, three months... if the latter, then that seems a bit too close to a late 2013 start date for principal photography for them to be properly prepared without hurrying. And Michael G Wilson was very vocal about how exhausted the short schedule for QoS left him; while Craig has been almost as vocal about how terrible he thinks QoS is, and blames that on a rushed schedule.

So yeah, I'm with you guys: sounds like a late 2015 release. I can't imagine MGM leaving it to 2016 because they need franchises to keep their momentum, and despite the boost that the 4 year gap gave SF, the execs are businessmen first, and trying to pull their company out of debt...

I can well imagine them starting to film in the Autumn of next year. Having the director fixted for over a year before filming starts worked last time.

I would also expect, that the sort of directors they have in mind post-Mendes need to be secured well in advance.

More than anything I think the 'within 3 years' is MGM covering their bases with the investors. The thing about Eon and the Bond series is it means, unlike most film franchises, MGM doesn't have too much say when it comes to when the next Bond film is released! If Eon wants to spend additional time on the film so the release gap ends up being every 3 years, MGM can't really push them to make one every 2 years. (Similarly they have little, if any, say in who is brought in to actually write and can't bring outside help to quickly finish the script if Eon doesn't want them too speed up production.)

If they promise their investors that they will definitely have a new Bond film in 2014 and Eon only has one ready mid-2015, this will likely lead to more financial strife for MGM...as MGM at this point doesn't have much going for it besides Bond. On the other hand the vague 'next 3 years' gives them a certain amount of leeway with the investors, promising them more huge blockbusters without being specific about when they will arrive, because MGM doesn't really have much say in that.

Ben Winshaw's comments about filming at the end of this year certainly suggest that Eon still seems to be aiming for a 2014 release (that might have changed slightly since Mendes decided not to return as director) and MGM's mention here of 'announcing a new director soon' could mean they already have a director in talks to succeed Mendes (or soon could simply mean, sometime in the next two years.)

MGW and BB have said a few times though that the wait won't be long and they're raring to go for the next one.

And I think Ben Wishaw's comments about starting at the end of the year are pretty concrete evidence that it'll be shooting this time next year, unless plans have changed.

I thought I heard somewhere that MGM promised to have a Bond out every two years now....
