Dispatch the armed isolation guards?

We see him do some kind of Zen Buddhist meditation in the glass cell, zipping up his jumpsuit, followed by one of guards saying "Going somewhere?" In the next scene in this room, Bond finds all of the guards dead, with Silva escaped down the maintenance hatch.

We think Silva's not much of a fighter, but is it possible he's holding back some serious skills?

I'd like to think so. We know he's very smart and cunning, but being a former agent it's evident that he does have retained some basic fighting skills and was able to take care of those guards pretty quickly and efficiently.

Indeed, that's Interesting. He's got skills if he really needs to utilise them, but I think after his cyanide incident he chilled out, content to sit behind a computer. Several times he mentions Bond exerting himself. “Your legs must be killing you” and “see what all this running around does, you need to relax.”

Good point, I thought that as firstly I assumed the guards would be armed with a dangerous prisoner amongst them, and since Silva wasn't, he'd have to get them pretty damn close to kill them without being shot.

I can't actually give an answer, because it's quite strange how he did that. It must just either be the guards really didn't think much of Silva and possibly tried to contain him, under-estimating his skills, and he managed to dispatch them.

But then saying that, their bodies were OUTSIDE the cell area, and as Silva wasn't armed... how did he get from the cell to the guards outside without being taken down? Obviously he's far deadlier and clever than we thought. Which I think was his idea anyway, to seem helpless.

we will probably know the entire truth.......part of fiction that is great we can imagine how he manage to do it! he could have some hidden weapon used to attack the guard which did expect it to happen......

Possibly. I didn't think on that as I would have thought MI6 would have frisked him better than that to let him hide away. But then it makes you think did someone help him get out for that moment, and he killed them too? Was one of the guards in on it..?

This is where our great Bond minds can write our own version of events!

Hell, maybe even Q WANTED him to escape and those doors opening weren't an "accident" after all. He even tried to have Bond crushed by a tube train taking him to a door he knew he couldn't open....and then letting Silva get a head-start on the tube and forcing Bond to risk his life jumping on a moving train....and those breadcrumbs just led Silva and his men straight to Bond with a small army, probably more than Bond wanted..

.....Q is Quantum!! :P

Well, there was a strong SILENCE OF THE LAMBS reference in the scenes with Silva inside that glass-cage, leading to another horror allegory. Lecter himself is a cipher for Dracula in that film, the superhuman monster. When he escapes he not only manages to overpower his guards, he also arranges their bodies in ways way beyond what you'd realistically expect from a not-too-fit middle aged guy. Silva's escape is meant to mirror this alarming ability without going the whole distance, artistically arranged corpses and escape by use of one man's 'face'. But the fact Silva's held in that cage and a straitjacket already tells us the Service is aware of Silva's extraordinary abilities, probably because they trained him. After all prisoners are not usually treated under such high-security conditions, not unless you have reason to expect them being dangerous beyond the ordinary means.

Glad I'm not the only one who felt the glass cage gave off a Silence Of The Lambs feel :P

I noticed it right away. In my opinion Lecters escape is dealt much better in the film than in the novel which explains how Lecter got his lockpick. I really don't want to know exactly how Silva escaped, what I can imagine is much more gratifying.

We could see he was riling up the guard. The guard looked arrogant and seemed to be taking the bait. I always imagined that the guard opened the cell door so he could hit Silva a few times. But then Silva got the better of him and escaped. My take anyway...

Sort of like The Joker does to that police officer in the interrogation room in 'TDK'. The Joker rubs him the wrong way, gets a few hits but over-powers him  (off-screen) and makes his escape.

This topic is an interesting one. Personally, I think it's all left up to the viewers interpretation. Personally, I feel that since Silva is greatly connected, the security guard was on his pay roll. His use of "Going somewhere?" was sarcasm on his part, Silva zips up his coat as a sign for action. Silva probably then killed the security guards anyway, even though they were working for him. Just to leave a sort of message. "I'm dangerous, don't cross me".
