Just read it, nice little bit.

What they do show, however, is the level of detail the people working on
a Bond film go to to make sure everything is as believable as possible.
Hm, I wonder now...
Did that art collector in Shanghai really have to die perhaps?

Fantastic find, thank you for posting. I think that's her name, yeah I'll take that.

Olivia Mansfield....hmmm...wow...at least her name wasn't Jane Mansfield!

Excellent find! I love this kind of stuff.

Here's a fun article on props from Skyfall, specifically Bond's evaluation report and the label on a box for a certain porcelain dog that reveals a certain character's name. Even more surprising is the reveal that the bag of Vesper's belongings at the end of Casino Royale contained a fully-written letter from her parents.
They're serious about detail over at EON!

And I always thought M was a randomly assigned letter....
Honestly, in Casino Royale, I thought he was about to say Mawdsley, like in the Benson novels. Looks like I was wrong...

Olivia for Craig, Barbara for Pierce............ Confirmation that they ARE two entirely different characters. I always assumed that because of the way Dench played the parts anyway.

OLIVIA MANSFIELD.
Now that IS something. Very cool! We have her name!

A brilliant article, and a wonderful find to discover M's name.

Found it a few seconds ago, too.
Wonderful!

The name 'Olivia' also appears on a leaked storyboard of the death scene - she reveals the name before stating 'You are the most gorgeous...' and dying. I think she is buried under rubble rather than shot. Silva comes to his end in the forest around 'Skyfall' which is ablaze from the explosion.

Living as I do only a couple of miles away from the town of Mansfield, I'm amused! I can picture the headline in the Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser or the Nottingham Evening Post - "007's Boss's connection with Becky Adlington's home town" . What with this and the local urban legend about Sir Roger Moore's alleged time spent in Notts in the 1960s.......

Was Barbara Mawdsley ever mentioned in the Pierce films? I always thought that was just something Benson came up with and not necessarily canonical.

Mods: Any chance we could merge this thread with the "The Incredibly Detailed Skyfall Props" thread that's happening in the "Skyfall" forum? No real need to have two separate threads on this topic I think.. Thanks

That's the way I'm looking at it.
Besides, in the official continuation novels (not just the novelizations) by Raymond Benson, that female M is identified as Barbara Mawdsley. So if this so-called "prequel" M is Olivia Mansfield then Judi Dench's Ms must be two different people. Either that or someone screwed up in the production of Skyfall.

One other point - in Skyfall we learn that M was once MI6 station chief in Hong Kong. Silva worked there from 1986 to 1997, when "Olivia Mansfield" handed him over to the Chinese. In the Brosnan era, M was already M in 1995. There was no crossover from the pre 2006 films to the re-boot era, save that the same actress played M in both periods. Which of course makes some sort of sense.

It's not stated she's section chief, no: she could have been M and still have handed him to the Chinese.

I like the name as well ....... either Zero Minus Ten or The Facts of Death, in Benson's acknowledgements, he thanks a person with the last name of Mawdsley, which is where I thought he got it from, but I read somewhere that the name came from an early GoldenEye draft.
As Craig's era's a complete reboot, I'm believing Dench's Brosnan M & Craig's M are two different characters.
It helps this total fangirl cope with the casting choice.

I paused the Blu-ray at the moment Eve hands the box to Bond and the name "Olivia Mansfield" is clearly legible, so I guess that does indeed make the name canon. A nice subtle way of getting it in there for us!
And, of course, in another nice touch, the first head of MI6, from which Ian Fleming took the initial M for his fictional equivalent, was Mansfield Smith-Cumming.
Hadn't thought of that! This is getting better and better.

After reading Vauxhall's post number 25, I also paused the Blu-ray to look at the label on the box. Here's what I got "[Illegible] Estate of Olivia Mansfield Bequeaths To James Bond." The underscored words were completed in longhand on an ohterwise pre-printed label. BTW, Olivia is Judi Dench's middle name.
