Was that actually Richard Kiel and Harold Sakata as their iconic characters too?

Yes. It was the last public appearance by Sakata, who passed away from cancer a few months later.

Aww that's a real shame.  :(    Thanks for confirming that bonded56.

Only just seen that Sheena Easton Oscar performance for the first time. Truly incredible - albeit not particularly in the good way.

It's a shame that they couldn't have just let her sing the song.  Surely Easton doing a straight-up, uninterrupted performance of "For Your Eyes Only" would have been a better tribute to the series than that.

Unfortunately, this is probably the same kind of treatment that the series will get by the Academy for this year's tribute.  It'll probably be some kind of song-and-dance number, as that's pretty much the only thing that the creative forces behind the ceremonies every year seem to be able to come up with.

Whether it might be part a dance number or not, there will be one other classic Bond theme sung that night......... And not by Adele.

It's going to be Shirley Bassey.

It has to be - if there's one singer you think of for James Bond it's Duran Duran Shirley Bassey. Should be a typically loud, drawn out and OTT performance of THAT song again then....!  *sigh*

Hello everyone.  I'm new to the forum.  Normally, I'd bring happiness and good tidings.

But, seeing as so many of you are excited about Adele and the 50th anniversary presentation at the Oscars, I figured I should warn you.  The last time the Oscars did a big James Bond number, in 1982 for Sheena Easton singing "For Your Eyes Only" in honor of the previous year's hit song... it... it... well...  let's just say some of you may prefer a bottomless wicker chair and a thick swinging rope to what the results were...

Good lord.

I like how, in the shot of her and Kiel, he's so huge that even though she's in front of him it looks like he's standing in front of her.

First tv promo. Bond, just Bond

Ooh dear. That's the gag they thought was strong enough to put in a trailer?

I was thinking that.... hopefully it's just a family friendly gag for the advert...!

Yup. Fine. I expect people will enjoy that. If I never hear her sing it again I wouldn't be too upset, but it's a logical choice I suppose.

It's too obvious - and her performances are always so drawn out and dramatic, I'm fed up with that song being the pin-up of the 50 years. There are plenty of other worthy singers with outstanding songs, like Sir Tom Jones, Sir Paul McCartney, Carly Simon would even make more sense with 'Nobody Does It Better' just to celebrate the 50th year.

Already I'm bored of this performance and what's betting she wears something gold and sparkly...yawn.

*rant over*

We'll all have to get get used to it because even in another 50 years "Goldfinger" will still be the most famous Bond of all. Not the best but but famous.

Yes. Shirley. Tough keeping that under my hat for the last two weeks.

I doubt it. Adele presumably has to perform her nominated song on her own. A duet on a different theme or a medley could be possible though.

Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger" on TV less than two years ago.  Skip to one minute in.  She's pretty amazing there, even without considering her age.  What a voice!

And this is her only 2 weeks ago at her concert in Hamburg, Germany. She opened the show with "Goldfinger":

It was a phenomenal night!

Dame Shirley is amazing, especially considering she can still belt out a tune infront of a live orchestra with such force at her age. The main irk I have about her subsequent renditions would be the way she delivers the "he's-da-man" line so quickly/differently compared to the original (where you can clearly her say "He's the man"). But heck - she can still hold that last note - and that is what makes her legendary!

Doesn't matter to me if Connery shows up or not anymore, Bassey is the icing on the cake.
