Skyfall’ Brings Windfall To UK’s Odeon Circuit
On Thursday, Skyfall became the UK’s all-time highest grossing 007 movie, taking £57M ($91.2)in just 12 days. Odeon, Britain’s largest cinema chain, is reaping the benefits of the breakout Bond movie scoring the largest 7-day opening ever for a single film with £11.3M ($18.1M) in takings at its theaters. Its flagship cinema, Odeon Leicester Square, also set a new record with more than £530K ($848K) in Skyfall’s first week to overtake Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which took £495K ($792K at current exchange rate) in 2011. Odeon had a 30.5% market share of Skyfall’s UK box office in its first week.

I think you mean 55 million pounds compared to Skyfall's current total of 57 million pounds. £55? You couldn't even buy a Royale Doulton Bulldog for that...

Serious question from someone very poorly acquainted with all-things-cinema: can't we compare the total *number* of tickets sold, instead of the totall gross? Aren't those figures available? It seems it would make more sense.

It would, I agree. The closest we have is adjusted gross figures.

That's the way we count in France : the success of movies are calculated with the total number of tickets sold, which avoids us the problem of adjusting figures.
As an example, here's the Bond movies classified by the number of tickets sold in France :

GOLDFINGER - 6 675 099
THUNDERBALL - 5 734 842
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - 5 623 391
DOCTOR NO - 4 772 574
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - 4 489 249
DIE ANOTHER DAY - 4 010 574
QUANTUM OF SOLACE - 3 722 798
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH - 3 599 609
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME - 3 500 993
GOLDENEYE - 3 493 610
TOMORROW NEVER DIES - 3 435 210
CASINO ROYALE - 3 182 862
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - 3 181 840
MOONRAKER - 3 171 274
LIVE AND LET DIE - 3 053 913
OCTOPUSSY - 2 944 481
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN - 2 873 898
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN - 2 582054
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER - 2 493 739
AVIEW TO A KILL - 2 423 306
LICENCE TO KILL - 2 110 402
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS - 1 978 347
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE - 1 958 172

Here's the new figures :

GOLDFINGER - 6 675 099
THUNDERBALL - 5 734 842
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - 5 623 391
DOCTOR NO - 4 772 574
YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - 4 489 249
DIE ANOTHER DAY - 4 010 574
QUANTUM OF SOLACE - 3 722 798
SKYFALL - 3 600 000
THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH - 3 599 609
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME - 3 500 993
GOLDENEYE - 3 493 610
TOMORROW NEVER DIES - 3 435 210
CASINO ROYALE - 3 182 862
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - 3 181 840
MOONRAKER - 3 171 274
LIVE AND LET DIE - 3 053 913
OCTOPUSSY - 2 944 481

LICENCE TO KILL - 2 110 402
THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS - 1 978 347
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE - 1 958 172
The difference is that SKYFALL is in theatres only since 14 days...

New figures (tickets sold in France) :

GOLDFINGER - 6 675 099
THUNDERBALL - 5 734 842
FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - 5 623 391
SKYFALL - 5 018 327

Now that Deadline & Empire has confirmed it, I'm more comfortable considering this as fact rather than supposition:

Now for the magic £100 million?

As of 16th December 2012: the UK tally stood at £97,897,404. So only just over £2.1 million till the magic £100 mill in the UK.

So who knows how much closer it is by now?

Sorry to ask a dumb question but in terms of inflation, does this mean Skyfall has beaten Thunderball to the top spot of "most successful Bond film ever"?

Shaken Cineworld revenue stirred by 007 ft jan 6 2013

Cineworld’s chief financial officer, said Skyfall, the 23rd film in the Bond series, caused revenue to surge in the fourth quarter and offset poor trading over the summer.

“We had our best ever week as a business when Bond opened,” Mr Bowcock said.

Skyfall has to date earned more than £100m in the UK and is the highest grossing film in the history of UK and Ireland cinema.

I think it needs another ten million in 2012 inflation.
