Top Gear's Richard Hammond has put together a special on Bond's cars for the 50th Anniversary, to be broadcast next Monday. There's a decent trailer at the link below. Looks good. It appears they aim to recreate the underwater Lotus Esprit sequence, and includes contributions from Sir Roger Moore, Guy Hamilton and Daniel Craig.

A Bond fan obviously put the trailer together: they show the Golden Gun roll jump with a car engine soundtrack and no slide whistle!

Nice to see they looked at the Bentley and the origins of Aston in the books too.
I cannot believe they actually made the Lotus work too; cement in the tyres. Who'd have thought?
Don't forget the BAFTA special later this evening ...

The Skyfall footage looks amazing in HD- I can't wait for the Blu Ray!
Thanks for the heads-up on the BAFTA thing!

So, with forgiveness, and the 50th anniversary, and perhaps even vindication, it was nice to see some TV boys giving it a crack and making something of it.
Hammond's delivery was spot on, and his enthusiasm and total love for the various cars' personalities as being something over and above 'better car chases' such as Ronin, was also a nice touch. He totally got it, and I must admit I had a big fat stupid grin all over my face from the first to the very last minute of watching it.
Well done fellas.

Case in point, this one.
Aside from lazy repetition, some of it is just plain rude. There is nothing wrong with being highbrow, but I think the exemplification should come through the writing, not derision.

There currently seems to be a proliferation of Guardian writers who think they're funnier and better scribers than they actually are.
Case in point, this one.

Hammond talks to a couple of actual Bonds too. The current one –Daniel Craig – who likes the car from You Only Live Twice: "Is it the Datsun?"
"Toyota 2000," Richard corrects him.
"Is that what it is?" says Daniel.
And he meets Roger Moore, who likes the car from For Your Eyes Only, "the little two-stroke whatever it was ..."
"2CV," says Richard, not bothering to correct the two-stroke bit. Interesting, that these real Bonds don't seem to care much, certainly don't know much, about their cars. Could it be that properly cool people aren't Top Gear Twerps and vice versa?
Ironic that he says that whilst pointing out that the 2CV wasn't two-stroke. So basically correcting Hammond. Could it be that properly cool people don't work for the Guardian?

I definitely wanted to see this, given that I am both a car geek and a Bond fan. Any way to see it in the States?
I believe it's on BBC America on the 12th of November.

Great BTS footage from 'Skyfall' also included and a fantastic test to build a real-life working Lotus submarine car!
Brilliant stuff.

Anyone else disappointed they skipped over the 1969 Aston Martin? It didn't have gadgets granted but not only did play into introducing the new James Bond but also was a part of the emotional climax of OHMSS. I guess they wanted to really play up the Aston's return in TLD so after leaving the Connery Aston they didn't bother to mention the newer model that appeared two years after YOLT.
It was a shame but they were always going to miss a few out. No mention for the FYEO Lotuses either.
It was a nice change to see the Octopussy Alfa highlighted- I love how that's driven in that chase.

Also, no real mention about the best car chase use in the Craig era which was, IMO, the Aston Martin vs Alfa Romeo pre-titles. Shame, but it was an hour so with so many cars they could have used, not everything was going to make it.

I expect they would have found that as offensive as the GoldenEye chase: why a DBS can't get away from a Alfa saloon is pretty ridiculous. It's an okay chase- not my favourite.

And to think I loved Serra's stuff in The Big Blue.

Don't know if you read the interview I did with the Sky chap who put together the Sky HD 007 channel car chase advert, but certainly the visuals were not to be tampered with in any way. That said, they were forced to completely re-record the sound due to the way the original sound was laid to track but the finished product was probably indiscernible to the common ear from the original sound.
I must wonder also if Mr Barry was responsible for the slide whistle...? Is it documented anywhere as such?
