Our first bit of footage! Could this be Bond? With the gun?

Clearer image of the guy with the gun. Let the speculation begin!

Hired generic goon/sniper for a scene set at the airport or an office in Shanghai, for my money. Of the cast we already know, the only possible contender I can think of would be Ola Rapace, albeit with short hair.

It looks as if they're filming the opening title sequence? I don't know... maybe that's just me, because of all the lights. So damn excited. The website looks amazing.

I like the way that the first footage that gets released is not some crappy, grainy handicam stuff shot from a distance, but actual footage released by EON.

Most likely the sniper is Ola Rapace. Here it's how he looks in a recent video which was uploaded on youtube on December 3rd. Keep in mind that the scene V64E that you see in the 007.com website was filmed only a few days earlier, precisely on November 21st 2011.

My theory is that whoeve the sniper is he is aiming at something most likely across the opposite side maybe targetting a person or monitoring that would be mine guess. Maybe sniper targetting someone and Bond go and stop him before it is done?

That's what sharpshooters do. Why else would he be there?

No Craig, no Fiennes. Yes Rapace.
Why EON hide him? Any fan thought he was Bond?

He's not being hidden.

We really see him twice. The first time, he is in profile. This is clearly very deliberate, and it will likely appear that way in the film, albeit at a different angle.

The second time, he is obscured by the camera. That camera is the actual camera being used to shoot the film; what we are seeing is behind-the-scenes footage.

And you never know - maybe Rapace's character has some kind of deformity with his jaw, and EON don't want it revealed just yet.

You´re not thinking in a steel jaw, are you??

For me, it is quite obvious that the man with the gun had been left in shadows, perhaps to start debate... but, this time, no debate at all (apart of course about who is he, what is he aiming, where is he, the letters on the glass...)

Anyway good news that Wilson had started with little videos (like CR), specially now that the filming is in a break.

Good point. From the footage you can read clearly only the letters "...tic op......", with the beginning of the first word being pretty short. My feeling is that the whole words could possibly be "asiatic operative", and therefore the place could be the asian subsidiary of a powerful multinational corporation. But given what I actually know, it's just a guess.

Plastic operation?
Pathetic opera?
Caustic optional seat warmer?
Fanatic opposable thumbs?
Hanseatic open day?
Tic op?

All of these would be pleasing.

Looks to be an efficient marksman in the employment of the villain. He'll probably shadow Bond for the film.

I love the fact that the site gets livelier. I find it strange, however, to get this particular snippet of a scene as the first impression of SKYFALL. Well...

Let´s continue: the scene is V64 E, and we had, weeks ago, the V64 BA with some chinese letters and qu... inter... under them.

More: what we see behind the sniper is a Chinese neon ad a la Blade Runner. We can see big Chinese letters and something differente at 20 sec. and in 38 sec written under that.

So, my thoughts: the footage is set in China; the letters are not important; Rapace is going to shoot somebody...

Ugh, god no. I don't know - maybe someone tried to cut his mouth open, so he's got a gash running straight down from from just his nose to his chin.

I actually doubt that Rapace's character has a deformity like that. Or at all, really. I was simply pointing out that this is behind-the-scenes footage, as opposed to actual footage from in the film.

My thoughts exactly. The Blade Runner reference really hit the mark for me, it´s gonna look great. Just remember Deakins is behind that camera. Good show.

BLADE RUNNER doesn't have a monopoly on neon signs, though.

I think what I'd really like to see from the sequence is an escape from the norm. Most of the time, sharpshooters in film insert themselves into a location, pick their post, assemble their weapon, take the shot and then escape, and all of it within a matter of minutes. And it does make for a tense sequence; it's just a little overdone. But I'd like to see events play out in such a way that the villains work out what Bond is doing, and know that if he keeps following the trail, it will inevitably lead him to a certain place. They may even deliberately leave evidence to lead him on. Rather than worrying about where he is and what he is doing, they know where he will be at some point in the future, and so Ola Rapace is inserted ahead of time. A lot of snipers are known for their ability to remain in position for days on end, waiting for their targets to arrive.

In the standard movie sniper scenario, the hero works out that there is a danger because he does some kind of threat assessment, and then notices that something has changed. This alerts him to the presence of the shooter, and it goes from there, usually in the form of a foot chase. But if Rapace were on the ground ahead of time and Bond did his assessment of the situation, he could potentially dismiss Rapace as a threat or fail to notice him in time because nothing about the situation changed. If EON want to pursue some kind of development-of-Bond-as-a-character story arc, having him fail a mission this way would offer some interesting avenues for development. We've never really seen Bond fail a mission at all before. If he was assigned some kind of protection detail, missed the shooter, and the person he was supposed to protect died, how would he handle it? What kind of consequences would he face? Would Bond hesitate in the future, or would he throw himself at his mission and potentially overlook threats again?

However, my concern is that this is going to play out like THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, with the Treadstone/Blackbriar assassin in Waterloo Station. He concealed himself behind that mechanical sign to shoot the journalist.

Maybe not, but it's easily the most ingrained example of Asian neon signs amid cityscapes at night, in Western cinema. Because of that, the BLADE RUNNER comparissons make perfect sense.

Couldn´t have answered better myself. Asian neon signs and cityscapes at night are to Blade Runner as waterlilies are to Monnet. Besides, why does it bother you (Cap) if we make that connection or any other for that matter? Because it will undermine or even contaminate people´s expectations positively? Jeez, so volatile :) On another note, I do like your scenarios. like you, I hope they don´t make it too Bourneish.

It doesn't bother me. It's just the first thing I thought of when I saw the footage was not BLADE RUNNER, but Shibuya in Japan.

And ggl, is this the image you were referring to?

Well, the reason why I thought of Shibuya is because when I saw the footage, I thought of the image that ggl mentioned and that I posted above. Since that apparently has Asian characters in it (and we know Shanghai is in the film), it made me think of Shibuya before Times Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Makes sense Captain. As does Blade Runner, Tron, and other references one could make if one has a projective mind ;) Cheers

Well, I've never seen TRON, and it's been a long while - longer than I'd care to admit - since I've seen BLADE RUNNER.
