I trust that at least one member around here can give me a little more information...
Now, I've heard about this game over the years and for those of you who haven't I'll direct you here: http://www.moddb.com...oldeneye-source

Well, I've really considered giving this whole deal a try, but I've yet to hear from anybody who plays already and frankly haven't tried it yet in fear for my computer's safety and well-being (from possible viruses/not having the right hardware). I also am worried that once everything is downloaded and ready to go, nearly nobody will be online to play. It is a shame really because from what I've seen, it looks like a really fun recreation of the original game, jsut don't know for sure if I can trust it, and if it is worth the download.

Any advice from current players or even those who have given it a try would be helpful...

I used to have it, but I had computer problems (unrelated to the game) I still haven't re-downloaded it, but its truly amazing! The download is completely 100% safe and free!

It's awesome. I only played it briefly before but it truly does look and play amazingly. One of the best fan mods I've ever played.

One downfall is it is only multiplayer, but I've read before that they are interested in doing the single player mode eventually.

I have it and play it here and there. It's fun. I just wish more people would play it. Just make sure you have a source-based game on your computer. (Half-life 2, Counter Strike, Team fortress 2, etc.)

I planned on downloading Team Fortress 2, seeing as it is free (if I have my facts straight that is). Don't you need to download steam as well to play?

Yes, TF2 is a game from Valve. Steam is online gaming store/community app from Valve. Steam is having a huge summer sale. So you will need to download steam to then download TF2.

I decided to follow up an earlier post, by providing my observations and experience concerning GoldenEye: Source.
I've downloaded GoldenEye: Source and have had it for close to week now. I'd like to confirm that it is a completely harmless download, just make sure your computer has the right specifications. I'd have to say overall, that for a free PC game modification, this game blows me away!

PROS:
- IT"S TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY FREE
- Maps hold a beautifully updated design and warm familiar feel to them. Each are a lot of fun to play and there are plenty of them!
- Weapons have all been adapted from the original and are all very recognizable in appearance and function.
- Updated level themes and a mix of familiar sound effects of the original are great.
- A wide skill level of players are on hand, so no need to worry you'll be the worst off.
- Feels fresh and the controls are very easy to pick up.
- Original as well as new game modes are available.
- There are a handful of new maps included that were not on the original, and there are even classic versions of the levels from the past.
- There is a map voting system before the end of each match

CONS:
- It is an online multiplayer experience only (though single player is supposed to be an option sometime in the distant future).
- Servers can become unresponsive (depending on connection).
- There is a slightly limited choice of characters that have been released so far.
- The amount of players online, depending on the time (middle of the day, late at night) can be very minimal, and sometimes non at all.
- Characters could be rendered a bit better, but most of the characters look acceptably fine.
- Some maps are chosen or skipped by server creators more than others.

TO SUMMARIZE:
It's definitely worth the download if you loved GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, or Bond games in general. It is quite fun to play, and even a bit addicting. It serves as a nice break from the cookie-cutter shooters of the modern day. All my reservations before concerning this game, which I am happy to report, have been put to rest. I definitely recommend it to anybody who may be interested!

The download and more information can be found here: http://www.moddb.com...oldeneye-source

Thanks Trevelyan - I'm going to download this now after that review, very good of you to do that.

I'll see if it works on my machine and we can hook up there for some GoldenEye action!

Great review Trevelyan! I hope single player is added in the future, I'm not sure if they will though with GoldenEye Reloaded out now.

That is a good point. They have just recently developed AI bot capabilities from what I've heard so that could be a solid step in the single-player direction.

For those interested, I've also took it upon myself to create a CommanderBond.net group on Steam, so once you have everything set up and downloaded join up!
Once in steam, just search for CommanderBond.net.

Cheers!

Interesting, anyways I hope a single player beta can come out by the end of the year.

Hey guys. Being a mad fan of both GoldenEye the film and specially the N64 version I never cared much about this mod seeing it was "unofficial stuff". Besides, I've hever had a good PC before (couldn't even play Nightfire!).

I've just downloaded the beta version and it's awesome! Now I'm installing the 4.1 version with bots. So, if anybody wants to get some shoot echange with me, just let me know :)

Download Steam and install it (and create an account). Download the mod here http://www.gamearena...-for-halflife-2

Then install the mod. Once it is installed run it and SDK 2007 will be automatically downloaded. Once it's finished you can run and play the game. That's what I did at least :)

BTW I'm having trouble with playing online with friends (all I get is "server not responding" when trying to create and invite or accepting an invitation). Anybody knows?

I'm an avid Steam user, all of my PC games are run through Steam. Anyway, I have GoldenEye: Source installed (version 4.2), it's a fun game and it's cool to see levels I vividly remember in 64-bit rendered much more clean and sharp. Honestly though, there are much better shooters out there.

Speaking of Steam...and Valve, I highly recommend Portal and Portal 2.

Be sure to jump into the CBn group on Steam, if you haven't already!

I used to play this all the time when it first came out, which must've been around 2005-06. I've moved away from PC gaming and over to the XBOX. Couple with several changes of PC, I've never returned to it. I think I've got some screen grabs somewhere - I'll have a look and post them up.
