I've just stumbled over a message on Facebook from Anders Frejdh's website From Sweden With Love that will possibly be of interest to Fleming afficionados and collectors:

Following last week's announcement on our website, FSWL is proud to reveal more exciting news on 'Ian Fleming: The Bibliography' by Jon Gilbert to be published by Queen Anne Press in October 2012. This is a must-have-book for all Fleming scholars as it is a comprehensive description of Ian Fleming’s literary oeuvre that ranges from the first draft of Casino Royale in 1952 to editions still being published sixty years later. Unparalleled in scope and scholarship, this is a critical reference book for fans of one of the twentieth century’s greatest thriller writers. Adrian Harrington are acting as distributor for the book, and orders can be placed through them or QAP.

Apparently this will be a collector's item of around 700 pages and 1000+ illustrations calling up £ 150 for the Standard hardcover and £ 250 for a Deluxe Edition (don't ask me...)

I'm afraid there will not come one, at least not from Queen Anne Press. They are a highly specıalısed publisher of strictly limited deluxe editions and nowhere near mainstream publishing. Some of their books, Peter Fleming's travel books for example, you can find as paperbacks from other publishers. But their original editions will probably remain in this very exclusive and rare realm reserved to the collectors.

At the moment it's doubtful such material as presented here would even find a greater audience on the mass market, much as one would wish for a larger readership. It is after all a very peculiar sideline of 20th century journalism and pop culture fiction that has never in fact received the recognition it deserves. Unfortunately the potential market is relatively small and shows little potential of growing in the near future. Perhaps continued public interest in Fleming and his works will one day gain enough momentum to make this material available to a broader public. For the time being I don't see this happen.

It would be particularly interesting if they were to include the contents of Fleming's notebooks. It would provide considerable insight into the background for the stories, and, of course, the stories that never were. In any event, this looks very promising.

But whereas The Bibliography will be a very pricy but potentially affordable £150, Talk of the Devil is still a £2000 purchase, since you have to buy every other Fleming book with it. Apparently "Fleming scholars" are all stinking rich...

Far too exclusive a purchase, as though the publisher really does think the notes of Fleming are for the eyes of the very wealthy only, not us Fleming fans who are mere foot soldiers...

Some info i thought i'd share, straight from QAP.

The bibliography will be available in the "cheaper" cloth binding or the more expensive "deluxe" quarter vellum binding akin to the white limited edition Cape OHMSS look.

Both editions may be similar in appearance to the cloth and vellum editions of the Bond novels QAP, published several years ago.

Based on looks alone i will probably go for the "deluxe" edition. I look at it as a one off purchase and since i'm a spendthrift, as a special treat.

And there are definately plans for Talk of the Devil to be released as a standalone volume in the near future!!!

There will be no crossover in information between TOTD and the Bibliography.
