Just found this when browsing tumblr...

From the set of the new Bond film “Skyfall,” Daniel Craig opened up about 2008’s ill-received “Quantum of Solace” and its particular failings. The actor says: “We were [censored]ed. We had the bare bones of a script and then there was the [Writer’s Guild] strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn’t employ a writer to finish it. There was me trying to rewrite scenes – and a writer I am not. We were stuffed.“

Sounds about right. He has said several similar comments before. It really was the writer's strike that screwed that film. I still maintain that it's a tribute to Marc Forster's talent that it came out as well as it did.

What is it about Bond out for revenge in South America and writers' strikes?

Well, I did mention that it was from Tumblr, so post didn't have a source, but it's something Daniel Craig would say, and it sounds about right.

Although, if you want a source, then I've tracked one down for you. If it makes you any happier.

Just because it sounds like something Daniel Craig would say doesn't necessarily mean it's accurate or even true. Anybody can fabricate anything they want on the Internet.

As a mod, I'd think you would strive for accuracy when reporting "Daniel Craig quotes" rather than complain when somebody asks for a link to an alleged quote.

There´s nothing to see here. Everybody knew about the strike and the effect it had on QOS. I´m sure that DC tried to change some dialogue (as every actor likes to do) but in the end it´s the director who does the last revision. Of course, I have set up Marc Forster with this comment - but again, look at QOS. At which point can you really say that the film shows a lack of rewrites?

Well said, loading the film with action certainly didn't help but I love the look of the movie. It's been a very long time since Bond had that exotic look again. If there was more dialogue in the movie it would have been fine. :)

The film simply does not engage me. The problem seems to stem from the script, which attempts to have all the Bond high jinks but with a human story in the foreground – a noble enough ambition; it works well for CR and OHMSS. However, in QOS it’s an ill-conceived script all the way form the basic premise to the “finished” dialogue script.

Would more rewrites have helped?

It might have improved the dialogue, but the writers strike kicked in about 4 or 5 weeks before the start of principal photography. Too late to do anything very drastic with locations booked and sets built etc.

Throwing out the whole original plot and starting afresh at the beginning of September, with a writers strike looming in November was probably the key bit of idiocy that led to the whole mess.

What "exotic look" are you talking about? CR had really plenty of (beautiful) exotic look, while QOS only had mostly wretched and depressing, so-called realistic, locations.

And what about Michael G. Wilson? He could write better than Craig some dialogue, scenes or lines...

I have read that complain already, but I´m not really sure about it... It´s more fair to say: "Ok, we did it wrong. We´ll try to do better this time". But, that has never been said of any other movie in the series...

Critical failure - so what? Critics have never been that kind to Bond (which is some ways has worked very much to the series' advantage). Bond is for the public and the series continues on the strength of its box office reciepts, a factor which QoS didn't damage one iota.

Well I felt it had a plush look, true they used a few realistic looking sets but overall the film has a glossy look reminiscent of Lewis Gilbert era. Perla De Luna, The Colonial style Hotel with Ken Adam inspired interiors, Barbican centre (hope spelling is right) and my favourite scene the Opera House. Even the Bolivian roads, train stations etc had a very 60's feel.

Can't stop laughing.

HAHAHHAHA!

(basically there's a 2-hour long boat scene where Bond gets chased by 3 boats, and it ends when Bond just decides to drive off), or how Bond spies on the super villain by driving his motorcycle up to a chainlink fence on a sunny afternoon and just listens to them talk.

They can't blame everything on the script. In the end it is just one piece of the puzzle.

Interesting. What was the original idea?

Nobody knows. Something was in progress even at the time of the "Casino Royale" press conference. Whatever it was involved scenes at the Palio in Sienna, because background footage was filmed the summer before principal photography began.

Shortly before the strike deadline, Haggis was quoted as saying something along the lines of "we thought we had a way we wanted to go with the script, but then we decided on something different," and he began his race with the strike deadline.

It would be interesting to know if the discarded ideas would have been better.

Maybe it'll be nentioned on the 3 Disc Collectors Edition. Hopefully that'll be released alongside Skyfall.

From what I understand, the original idea entailed Bond finding Vesper's child. There's more to it than that but that was the main hook, to use a suddenly overused term.

As for that review.....we get it, he thinks Daniel Craig sucks and is still mourning the loss of Brozza. Woo hoo.
