Are those the full chapters? I know Deaver doesn't go in for extensive chapters, but they seem a little brief. If this book had thirty chapters that long, the book would only be about fifty pages long.
I haven't really read too much Deaver - certainly not for a while - but what's been posted seems a little too brief in terms of the actual content. I mean, Bond has two allies with him for this operation, but they don't even get names.

Just read it now. Am I the only one who feels Bond's op in Serbia is reminiscent of his Madagascar mission at the start of Casino Royale (the film not the book)?
I mean, even in the film, as here, Bond is on a mission to capture and question a suspect connected to an impending terrorist attack...and as in the film, he has an incompetent sub-agent (well, two of them, actually, in this case)...
Somehow, I wonder if this was deliberate...after all, Carte Blanche HAS been compared to Casino Royale (both being 'reboots' of the respective Bond franchises)...furthermore, Carte Blanche being the first book in a new series, its a nice subtle touch to pay homage to the adaptation of the first ever James Bond book.
That said, Bond himself seem a bit more experianced in the extract than Craig's Bond in Casino Royale.

Now that you mention it, it does sound like the opening chapters of Robert Jordan's THE EYE OF THE WORLD - he deliberately wrote it to be remniscent of THE LORD OF THE RINGS (specifically the first half of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING) so that fans of the genre would be comfortable in such a complex world.
