Yep, I checked on that first: embargoed until 26th.

The rest is really just crumbs, but it reads a bit as if it had been done by Deaver himself. Maybe from his early notes?

His gun is a Walther PPS, whatever one of those is.

It's a gun.

Bond drives a Volkswagen Jetta, whatever one of those may be

It's a car.

If I'm not mistaken, CARTE BLANCHE hits British bookshops next Thursday (26 May), so I daresay the weekend papers of 28-29 May will have the first reviews.

I doubt there'll be any reviews before the day of publication.

Someone on Jeff Dever's Facebook page claims he has a copy in hand. :|

EDIT: Hmmm...look like the post is gone now.

Well, there must be thousands of copies on their way from the printers to the wholesalers and chains by now. Could be the odd book was missing its train, ship, plane...

I'm just hoping I get the book in hand by next weekend. I'm working a full-time day job this summer and weekends are the only time I can properly read.

Why? Book reviews come out before the books do.

I believe that's true, generally speaking, but remember DEVIL MAY CARE? If memory serves (although someone like zen may be able to contradict this), there wasn't a single professional review of it before the day of publication. In fact, I think the first "review" was on the BBC News website on the day of publication, with a journo reviewing it as he read it and updating his posts throughout the day. I suspect that CARTE BLANCHE will follow a similar pattern.

Same with the Harry Potter books, I think - these things tend to be embargoed and kept under wraps right up till release day. Seems to happen also with certain blockbuster movie releases.

I guess the thinking is that they don't want bad reviews to spoil the party before people have paid up.

That said, in today's world there are always one or two little pre-release leaks, so I guess we'll see one or two reviews in the day or two before CARTE BLANCHE hits shops, but I imagine they won't come via the mainstream media. Then again, given that The Times carried these early extracts, perhaps that paper will also be granted the privilege of first review a couple of days before the rest of the pack.

Right, yeah; fair point.

I hope they don't, though. I don't know if my finger's off the pulse a bit but this doesn't seem as big an event as DMC thus far.

As far as I know, they didn't release any reviews copies. I asked about it. Even the U.S. publisher said they couldn't send a review copy of their own edition until after May 26th.

But it's possible they slipped it to a few select reviewers/papers, so we might see something on release day.

This isn't as big as the DMC promotion. But that was off the charts and, remember, that was all tying into the Ian Fleming Centenary and the London exhibitions, etc. I'm certainly not disappointed in the CB promotion. It wasn't all that long ago that Bond books got NO promotion whatsoever.

Well - the ex preordered it for me as I did him a favour, but he's preordered from Amazon. Hopefully it will turn up on Thursday but given my previous experience with Amazon, I doubt it - looks like it will be Friday at least before I read it.

I've seen press mentions that have called getting a review/advanced copy "A mission worthy of James Bond"

If you want the Simon & Schuster edition, yes. But the UK/Hodder edition is available on the Canadian Amazon. More expensive though.

Well, I wasn't going to read any extracts, but I read these first two chapters - so much for my willpower.

There's a couple of things I could be picky about:
Spoiler

Also, I wince at the reference to
Spoiler
On the other hand, I'm pleased that Deaver calls
Spoiler

There are various things that I wish the editor had tweaked. I think we should be told what
Spoiler

On the whole, though, these first two chapters are very encouraging, and, yes, this is markedly far superior stuff to DEVIL MAY CARE. There's pace, wit and excitement here, and on the evidence so far CARTE BLANCHE has a real pulse, which is something that can be said of hardly any Bond continuation novel.

Looks like CARTE BLANCHE will immediately swagger up to COLONEL SUN, JAMES BOND: THE AUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY and JAMES BOND, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME and join them at the top table (at Sardi's, not McDonalds) of continuation novels. Can't wait to read it. :)

Quite. Thanks for the link regardless.

Extracts on Deaver's site are...interesting. Having not read anything of his previously, I was surprised by how his writing pulls off both density and pace. He really does pack exposition in, but manage to keep it moving. A bit odd, seeing our James in such a contemporary and - perhaps - harshly realistic context.

There were a few points - those intercepted 'messages' being one - where I actually laughed out loud. Aside from that, very anxious to see where it goes.

(I mean really, do terrorists send messages like "Big attack coming on the 20th! British interests [vaguely] affected! Meet me at this restaurant to discuss!").

I'm just nitpicking ridiculously. I'll read this in a day when I get it. ;)

I would not be so hard on what you call his box ticking. We have to take into account that each work is a unit onto itself, and this being a new beginning that rule holds even more true. Yes he writes for Bond fans like us, but he's also writing for his fans who may have never read a Bond book, as well as all the people who are just gonna pick it up because they like Bond on film but never read a book.

As for the Bhopal, India thing. So what if he says that Bhopal is in India. Not everyone knows this. My parents are Jamaican and Indian and I grew up equally in both places. You would be surprised things that are considered common knowledge that has to be explained. I get questions about places, phrases, local customs as they related to Dr No, TMWTGG, etc. One cannot assume that a book set somewhere exotic like Bhopal would be a known locale to everyone reading. Hell, when I read the series through the first time I had to look up several countries, cities, and so on. Like GF, a car ride from England to the rest of Europe? Where is Switzerland? Id that a real place or made up for the book? Stuff has to be explained, especially when kids of 13 like I was start reading the books.

I didn't know where Bhopal was. I think it's really good news when most of the nit picking lies on such minute details. At first I was taken aback by his description of Bond, because it's very rare (at least to me) to see an adult author so bluntly describe his main character. However, as Loomis said it's out of the way, and we can move on. Deaver clearly isn't dwelling on anything here. We've hit the ground running and I couldn't be happier. My only issues (again, we are seriously nit picking here) is that if he's referring to the tribal region known as FATA, that's in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. However, if he's just talking about Kandahar province, then he's fine. Either way, that's exactly where most of the Al Qaeda operatives are right now, so he's dead on target. Keep in mind this is a fun bit of pulp. You can tell Deaver was into this. Lovely fast paced writing style.

Also, do you think that description of the character was intended to immediately detach the book from the Craig Bond films? That's also a possibility.

That occurred to me (although it still doesn't excuse it). Do we know whether Deaver's M is male or female?

He's confirmed its male a long time back. No one's sure whether its a rebooted Admiral Miles Messervy or someone else entirely.

I took that text to be the decoded/bowdlerised meaning, not the actual wording. Anybody sending such a message would indeed have to count on some kind of authority turning up at the rdv.

Of course. It just came off as somewhat funny.
