Big extract in today's Times, what appear to be the first couple of chapters; further extracts in The Times on Monday. Haven't checked but these may be behind the paywall on their website.

Interesting stuff, mild spoilers below

Spoiler

"...and so at ten o'clock last night, the rangy tentacles of these events had reached out and clutched Bond..."

(I do rather like that; smashing)

I've read the extracts a couple of times now and Mr Deaver can chalk up another sale. All very delicious so far, even if nothing has really happened. But yes - Deaveresque short chapters!

(It is behind the paywall; bloody Murdoch. Although I've just paid a pound for his paper so there's no escape from my hypocrisy).

My issue with him is what he's allowed The Times to become since he's the owner. And the change to Tabloid could be seen as somewhat suggestive of the contents.

That said great find, Jim! Thanks for sharing! Sounds promising.

Surely they wouldn't release so much content from the main story so soon, would they? I'd say the speculation that this is something of a prologue is dead on target. It is not going to be easy remaining spoiler free, that's for sure.

I broke down and paid the pound to read it online.

I love it! :) I particularly like the first chapter. That's absolutely the start of a Bond novel. Travelogue aspect, check. Also happy to see that this is our James Bond, right down to the comma of loose hair and scar.

Is it more promising than the initial Devil May Care extract?

Not a patch. Back then I nearly cancelled my Amazon order.

(Of course I didn't. But I should have.)

Deaver did comment last year at the signing for The Burning Wire that I attended that all of the chapters were pretty short, more in common with his Kathryn Dance/Lincoln Rhymes novels (ie The Sleeping Doll - this was in response to me asking him if the book would be more like The Sleeping Doll or The Garden of Beasts in style) than the longer chapters of The Garden of Beasts.

If that helps.

I wonder if I can still track this down, if one of my friends has a copy of the paper.

So what you're saying is that it's already very obvious that CARTE BLANCHE is vastly superior to DEVIL MAY CARE? That's reassuring. :)

Well, it's actually not such a big deal. I recently found an old shopping list in the glovebox that I would deem vastly superior to DMC...

Not even James Bond could prevent that horror.

Did Deaver title his chapters or just write, chapter 1, 2 etc?

Oh man, I'm getting excited! I'm sure the narrative concerning Bond's origin's will come later on. Not sure if I should pay the pound or not. The book aint too far away but then again... Anyone want to type up the text then post it in the forums or is that illegal..? ;)

If Deaver does a good job with this book I'm going to wish he would write all of the Bond books! I reckon Samantha Weinberg would be a good choice. Loved her Moneypenny Diaries.

The flatmate/ex's new boyfriend seems to be an educated man, so I have texted him to ask if the new boyf gets the Times. Hopefully I will have the extracts to read later.

Sunday: The Red Danube Chapter 1

No title on Chapter 2

I really wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't get an involved origin story. He can just be James Bond and he comes from military service. Just as he's introduced in Casino Royale. Maybe we can discover more over the course of the books.

It's two pages online (five printed). It's also copyrighted, so, no, can post it.

I have a feeling it won't be particularly involved. I would like to learn a little about how he was recruited. I just wish he came from a naval background. I suppose serving in the army in Afghanistan is more relevant though. If I am to have a major criticism of this book it will probably be that it's too fast paced.
