Sweet. Real progress, and with the company I'd wanted. Excited.

Whoops, duplicate. Mods?

Good news, as it indicates progress. Personally, I don't like how the Spyglass honchos are running MGM at the moment, and I'm rather skeptical of their plan as well. It's certainly caused a lot of friction between many other studio heads. That being said, I've always felt that Sony had a bit of edge, for obvious reasons. They already co-distributed and financed the two previous Bond films, they've worked with MGM on some of their other recent films, and Sony has a very good relationship with EON.

Still, as Deadline says, nothing is yet official, although things are pointing towards it being Sony. We shall see. Considering Sony's recent relationship with MGM, Bond, and EON, I think this is the best choice.

The deal is done. Announcement:

Sony Pictures Entertainment will remain in the James Bond business after reaching an agreement with MGM to co-finance and theatrically market and distribute Bond 23 worldwide, it was announced today by MGM Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum and Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal. Sony will release the next film in this iconic franchise on November 9, 2012 throughout the world except for select International territories, where MGM will directly oversee distribution.

Sony Pictures and MGM look forward to Sony Pictures co-financing and distributing Bond 24 on a similar basis.

Additionally, MGM and Sony Pictures have agreed to explore co-financing opportunities on future motion pictures produced by each of the respective studios for the next five years.

The two studios have collaborated directly and indirectly in recent years on numerous films, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, 21, Yours, Mine and Ours, The Pink Panther, and the forthcoming Kevin James comedy Zookeeper.

The announcement of the agreement to distribute Bond 23 adds another high-profile title to Sony’s 2012 slate, which also includes Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as I Hate You, Dad, starring Adam Sandler, Here Comes the Boom, starring Kevin James, 21 Jump Street, Resident Evil 5 and Total Recall.

“Sony Pictures is the ideal studio partner for us as MGM re-enters the filmmaking business. We have longstanding relationships with Michael and Amy and look forward to what promises to be a prosperous future together,” said Barber and Birnbaum.

“In addition to working together on Bond, this deal expands our relationship with MGM as we explore co-financing opportunities on other high-profile projects,” Lynton said. “Gary and Roger are incredibly thoughtful and experienced leaders who are outstanding creative executives and respected moviemakers. While we are excited to be back in the Bond business, we also look forward to future collaborations and I am confident that this agreement will be long-term, lucrative, and beneficial to both studios.”

“After successfully working on the re-launch of the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, we could not be more proud or privileged to continue our association with Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, Daniel Craig, and the talented teams at EON and MGM,” said Pascal.

When Sony released Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, the films had record-high grosses for the Bond franchise, with Casino Royale taking in $599 million in worldwide ticket sales and Quantum of Solace generating $577 million.

Hopefully it will come earlier than that, because I believe TMSM doesn't come out until July.

From what I read in that article it sounds like a good deal for MGM. I generally like Sony as a corporation b/c they aren't afraid to take chances and spend big.

From the article linked in the first post: "There are unconfirmed rumors that Slumdog Millionaire's Freida Pinto is under consideration as a possible Bond girl."

I haven't seen Slumdog Millionaire so I don't know how good of an actress she is, but she certainly looks the part and would continue the trend in the Craig era of absolutely gorgeous Bond girls. I suspect if she's being considered though that she can act well.

EDIT: Really? Someone gave this post a negative mark...does somebody have something against beautiful women or something...

That news is so a year ago.

Notice the original article is over two months old and the Freida Pinto rumors started as soon as Slumdog Millionaire won best picture.

Oh, I didn't know. Considering the whole production got shelved for such a long time she could easily still be under consideration though. Man, I can't wait to start hearing some concrete details about the film..c'mon!

I'm glad Sony is still on board. A Craig led Bond 24 seems very likely as well.

The official press release just came out. Deadline and other entertainment sites had reported some time back that MGM and Sony were in final talks for Bond 23. Paramount and other studios had dropped out previously.

The product placement in Quantum was much more subtle than what we saw in Casino Royale. The scene where Bond is in the surveillance room in the Bahamas, surrounded by Sony monitors, computers, CD's, and Blu Ray players while checking his Ericson cell was way too much and distracts me every time. If they keep it dialed down we'll be in good shape. That said, Sony is pretty good about marketing the films so I look forward to what they have cooked up for the 50th.

Didn't Pinto dismiss the rumors and say she didn't consider herself right for a Bond girl role? Anyone remember that? Or am I crazy?

I hope they will tone down the SONY product placement. I am sick and tired of mobile phones. Now it is time to bring in some proper Bond gadgets. Something a little bit more lethal and stylish than the everyday technology we use.

Could be good news. Did Sony distribute the last two films, or was that MGM?

Just hoping an end to this double dipping and poor poster design.

poor poster design.

"That's putting it mildly, 007!"
The latest posters were disastrous, QoS being the worst of the whole series.
Bring back the "Bond touch" to posters, please! So that we know we have a Bond ahead of us, even without having yet seen the film itself.

That Pinto dame is beautiful. I like Indian women. Her acting was alright in Slumdog.

I like the Casino Royale (2006) posters. The QOS ones aren't anything to write home about though.

A remake of Total Recall?! Brilliant!

I agree, the smart phone tech has been done to death and isn't even very unique. I'd like to see some more interesting gadgets in line w/ past Bond films.

I believe Sony did in fact distribute CR and QoS. What's wrong w/ the QoS posters?

I know that's only one of several posters, but James Bond has never looked so baddass...certainly better than many of the cheesy 80s posters.

A remake of Total Recall?! Brilliant!

I hope you're right. The original isn't oscar worthy, but it's a classic. I have a feeling they're going to mess it up and it's going to be some "as realistic as possible" generic action movie.

"...certainly better than many of the cheesy 80s posters."

I agree that a number of those 80's posters look on the cheesy side. I wouldn't care if they never returned to that style. I dig the Dr No and FRWL posters. A return to that style would be most welcome.

"How about a really exciting spy thriller?"

Would be good if Bond 23 was a spy thriller (with some obligatory action on the side) instead of an almost non stop action flick. Pigs might fly too.
