Jeffery Deaver will be talking about the state of modern crime fiction along with other authors on BBC 4's "Front Row" at 19:15 (in about 10 minutes time as I write this). You can listen live here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

He didn't really give a lot away in 007 terms, but the whole 'Front Row Special' was more interesting than normal. As a writer seeking publication, it was interesting to hear the narrow views of the agents / publishers. I wondered if they really know what the public wants. One of the most disconcerting things I've encountered is the number of female literary agents working in the traditionally male field (e.g. spy, crime and action novels). There is hardly a man among them and I do wonder if that has contributed to the more sympathetic characters and personality driven fiction that abounds. Additionally there has been (IMO) a slide towards 'soap opera' characters, who appear in novel after novel, whose persona develops as the stories progress. This (and Fleming cut into it also) can result in very lazy writing, but massive popularity. Deaver of course has his own characters to maintain, so I'll be interested to read his take on Bond.

He called suggested Bond would be 29-30 years old and that it was a 'reboot' of the novels, in the same way CR was a reboot of the movies.
I've actually longed for this for some time, and my own Fan Fic alludes to it, as I don't see 007 being framed by a personal history. I see each incarnation (or adventure) more as an enigma, or a fascimile. Bond will be modern and have modern tastes and won't be lumbered with a history that's insustainable from before the war. I'm looking forward to it. Deaver's being very up front and honest about it without revealing secrets. That's a good sign too.

Note of caution: I also looked forward to Devil May Care.
