There was precedent for mentioning dates in the future in the Gardner novels (for instance, the 1997 handover of Hong Kong is mentioned in No Deals, Mr. Bond) but I found it really interesting that 2009 (a very recent year) was mentioned in Win, Lose Or Die...

Bond nodded. In the basement, below the underground parking at that building overlooking Regent's Park, there was a great sterile computer room they all called Santa's Grotto. With the advent of the microchip the old Registry had been relegated to a smaller area and people were constantly transferring the paperwork onto a series of giant data bases. Rumor had it that all work would not be completed from past files until the year 2009, or thereabouts, as the crow flies.

Well the 1997 handover was decided in 1984 wasn't it?

So was this prediction accurate?

I'm a little confused by your question.

I was refering to the Registary having transferred its files to computers. Or did Gardner make this up?

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding but the 1997 handover and the 2009 reference are completely unrelated. The only reason I mentioned 1997 is to illustrate that Gardner had used future dates before in his Bond novels but never a date this far into the future (I think). I found it interesting because 2009 was last year.

The Registry story was completely fabricated by Gardner since MI6 does not publicly announce when it backs up its highly classified files. :P
