But Deaver talked about what the 00 section is today. The implication seems to be that Bond is a double-oh.There's nothing to say that this Bond will even be a 00-agent in the book. This could be before all that, which I'd be happy to read personally. I'd love a book or two that takes place prior to him becoming a 00-agent. Like the first book puts him on the map with M and the second has him becoming a 00-agent.

Approximately 38. Recently I went back through some of Eon's reboot stuff. According to that, Bond joined MI6 at the age of 30 and didn't make 00 till 38 which no doubt he will continue to be.
If Fleming, in Moonraker, is to be believed, Bond was 37 at the time of the events of that book - perhaps 1954, the year before the book's publication - making his birth year 1917. If Bond didn't join the Secret Service till he was thirty, that would make it after the Second World War...and if I'm not mistaken, there are references, in Fleming, to Bond's wartime service for whatever that agency was called at the time.
Didn't Pearson assume a birth year of 1923, making Bond 15 or 16 when he began operating as an agent, in the late 1930s? It seems as though I remember some reference, in one of the early books, perhaps even Casino Royale, to Bond having something like ten years in Service, at that point.
Now my head hurts. Sorry - I didn't mean to derail the thread.

37 or 38 depending on his birthday. The year of his birth continuously changed. Last mention would be 1924 (Fleming, Higson alludes otherwise, actually more in line with Pearson). I once wrote an entire section for Wikipedia on this. It really hasn't changed since doing so: here.

You're right on that K1 - I've always used MR as my basis for Bond's age. The mention of him being taken off the active list at 45 is what did it and then him thinking that it was eight years away.
I'll still stick with the November 11th b-day (per Pearson) and Bond states he was born in 1920.
Bond is ageless, but certainly a mature man in his middle late 30's. This new take of him being someone one the verge starting his third decade will be interesting in a contemporary world.
I can't wait...well, I have no choice, so I will, but the re-boot of the character might just be right with the verge of the 50th celebration of the cinema form of 007 the following year.
Hell, I'm already planning on being in London for the launch. Bond will be back....and Bryce will be there to welcome him.

I've been wrestling with what question to ask him, and I think I'll be asking about how much input he had into the "reboot" aspect and how much "imitation" (for lack of a better word) of Fleming he'll be utilizing.
If anyone can think of anything more clever to ask, please respond here by 5pm eastern and I'll definitely give it a go.

You might ask him whether he's found the time to read any of the Project X-related discussion among Bond fans, on boards like this - and whether it's made him regret having undertaken the assignment.

That's a good question, I remember Benson saying how he stays away from the 'net because of fanboyism.

I think most of the discussion really is not meant as hostile or malicious. It's fans discussing their favourite passtime, concerned about the fate of their hero. I haven't seen any polls up to now, but suspect the overall reaction is cautiously positive albeit apprehensive about the reboot. Nothing that was not really to be expected after this major news for lit-Bond.
I tend to think that most of the (highly theoretical) criticism is the direct result of too much conversation with too little to really talk about. If each poster were only permitted a single statement - and I'm certainly not advocating this, as it would make for an extremely boring forum - I'm fairly certain that practically ALL of those comments would be something along the lines of, "Fantatic news, I can't wait!" It's only after everyone has already said that several times that the over-thinking starts to take over, and the fears and cynicism emerge.

The island, BTW, would make a great Bond locale (no automobiles allowed, access only by boat, it's where Somewhere in Time was filmed with one of the most beautiful of the Bond girls, Miss Seymour .) Seems like it would be a great end of the summer trip.
Always made me sad that Raymond never came around the corner of the lake to sign in Michigan.

Deaver's LA area appearances start today. Seems like most of the LA Bond crew will be at The Mystery Bookstore singing tomorrow (including myself), but I'm thinking of also blasting over to the Thousand Oaks appearance today at noon. All of these are easy for me. Not sure which one I'll go. Probably the first. Thousand Oaks. Why wait? Although The Mystery Bookstore is sort of a tradition...

Frankly, I wouldn't mind going to all of them just to see if he reveals anything different during the Q&A, but I don't want him to think I'm a stalker.

He repeated much what we've already heard -- Bond would be a veteran of Afghanistan (JD called it "Operation Herrick"), he said Bond would be "29 or 30", he really emphasized how he was going to present a modern version of Fleming's character which he called "dark." He also said he would do only one book.
Some new info was the book would span "4 or 5 days" and he's recently changed one of the "exotic locations" (no further clues about locations).
My question: I noted that, in their day, the Fleming books were considered quite sexy (even dirty by some critics) but that some of the recent continuation novels where pretty tame in this regard (especially DMC); was he was going to put some Fleming-like sex into his book? I don't remember his exact words but the answer was essentially a very big YES. Think he might have said something like, "I have a few scenes you're really going to like."
A nice personal treat was when I went up to get my book signed (I brought with me the CR with his intro), I introduced myself and he knew who I was (via IFP)! He said he's been meaning to get in touch and would do so when he was done with his tour. He even shook my hand. Very flattering moment.
He's also well aware now of the online reaction, although during the event he said he doesn't really engage all that much in "social media" (he's too busy writing), he gets stuff sent to him. I told/warned him there would be a Bond presence at the signing tomorrow, so let's not let him down.
Oh! He also said Daniel Craig was his favorite Bond, although he didn't care all that much for QOS.

Would be a great scoop for you website!I've already sent Mr. Deaver an e-mail regarding Felix Leiter but if one of you could ask him if Leiter will be featured in Project X at one of these signings, I'd really appreciate it.

Trouble is Righty, I don't feel like it's all that polite to pepper him with Bond questions at an event for The Burning Wire. I feel like I can ask only one Bond question, and I have my own question chambered (actually, I have dozens, and I have to select one). So I can't promise anything. We'll see how it goes. Yesterday's Q&A was very brief.Would be a great scoop for you website!I've already sent Mr. Deaver an e-mail regarding Felix Leiter but if one of you could ask him if Leiter will be featured in Project X at one of these signings, I'd really appreciate it.

It's fine. He actually doesn't talk much about The Burning Wire or any of his books specifically. He talks about the art and business of being a novelist and how you develop an idea. It's a very good presentation.
Ok, although I think it's just a book signing. Still, be good to press the flesh. Any die hard Deaver fans in sight and good numbers there?
Zencat getting Casino Royale signed by Deaver is quite a scoop. The last person who tried anything like that at a Faulks signing got tasered like Mathis in Casino Roayle and were lead off by security with their feet dragging behind them. I still laugh to this day about when I woke up in a skip.
