Thanks for the information, interesting.
Hmmm, tight schedule this year. Wonder how much of PROJECT X is already finished? I suspect, most of it. Perhaps it's actually in the editing phase?

Frankly, I wouldn't mind going to all of them just to see if he reveals anything different during the Q&A, but I don't want him to think I'm a stalker.

Although I'm not going to put him on the spot. Not going to ask a question I know he can't answer. Also don't want to take the focus of the event off the book he's promoting. But it would be wonderful to come away with a new nugget of info, no matter how small.

I'll be forever indebted to you if you ask him if he's planning on having Felix Leiter make an appearance.Count on it.

We'll see, Righty. I'm only going to ask one Bond question so I want to choose carefully.I'll be forever indebted to you if you ask him if he's planning on having Felix Leiter make an appearance.Count on it.

You should email him, Righty. Be a good way to introduce yourself and your site. Even if he can't answer your Felix question, he might came back when he can and give you the exclusive. Please check out his website and feel free to email him if you wish to ask him a question. He told the group that he reads all his email.
He is very easy to approach too. He loves to hear from his fans and has book tours all the time, so the chance of meeting him and getting his book signed by him is very good. He does book tours all over the world.

He spoke and answered questions for more than an hour before the signing...talking about his earliest published novels ("They're not on the 'Also By' list because they were really, really awful."), gave a brief lesson in editing redundant or otherwise bad writing, and also spoke about Project X, without prompting.
JD said that his outline for the Bond novel is up to about 180 pages, but didn't give any indication of how close to completion that puts it; he'd mentioned earlier that most of his outlines ran to between 140 to 150 pages. He also said that he was up to "three or four thousand pages of research" on the Bond book.
This is doubtless old news to most, but I confess I haven't read every post in this thread: Deaver stated that "his" Bond will have been born in 1982; he described the current project as "a reboot"; he intimated, at one point, that "other writers" would be following up his effort.
When it was my turn at the signing table, he inscribed his new book for me (which, quite honestly, I only purchased as a thank you to the bookseller...I don't know when, if ever, I'll find time to read it), and then the paperback copy of Garden of Beasts with the 007-like little graphic - I mentioned that the cover had made this the "edition of choice" among Bond fans, because of the cover, and he indicated that he'd heard that, and said, perhaps facetiously, that he was surprised that "the Fleming people" hadn't sued over it. I had also downloaded a nice photo portrait of the author from his website, and had had a matte 8x10 printed, and I asked him for a "Bond-esque inscription". He wrote "To Jeff...Hope you enjoy my license to thrill...Jeffrey Deaver". (He apologized for "the bad pun", but I responded that great writers were allowed to make bad puns, which he greatly appreciated.)
As I say, a very, very nice man, and it was a genuine pleasure to have met him. As I left, he said, "I'll be happy to see you when I come back next year."

Good info on Project X. Actually builds a bit on Shatterhands exclusive. So with have a firm date and age. Born 1982 -- makes him 29 or 30 in 2011. Lazenby age. Also confirmation of more writers to follow. Love how much work he's put into he outline and research.

Great news about X; a tremendous amount of research done for the gig and 180 pages of outline seem also most substantial. Keep in mind that DMC ran at a generously spaced 320 pages, not even double the amount Deaver has already down as outline. I'm starting to suspect Project X may actually become one of the longest entries in the series. Unless a lot of the outline is meant as a 'bible' for X, to be used by Deaver's successors?
Btw, the way I understand the term 'reboot' it's its own particular universe not connected to the first timeline, so I don't expect the events of CR through TMWTGG to fit into X-Bond's continuity; at least not as described in the originals.

Well damn. I figured Bond would be young in this, but I was thinking low 30s. I guess I'm older than Bond now. That's such an odd feeling.

Thank you for this, godwulf. Sounds like a terrific event. Can't wait for his LA signings. Yes, I'll be having him sign Gardens with the Bond-like cover (hope the store has this edition). Cool that he said he had heard it was the "book of choice" for Bond fans. Wonder if he's made it to CBn yet?

I mentioned to Deaver that if he found the time, he should check out the Jeffrey Deaver forum at commanderbond.com...that the postings in the "Project X" thread alone had surpassed 24 pages, and he seemed surprised that the thing had generated that much conversation. (He said something like, "Already?") I have a feeling that he will probably visit, if he hasn't yet; by his own admission, and the testimony of others, the man lives for reader feedback.
Yes, he mentioned a couple of times that Bond's birthdate will be in '82, and he also mentioned that he would be 28 years old in the book...so I'm assuming that it will be set in 2010.
Another thing that I recall him saying is that the Bond story will, like just about all of his other books, be what he calls "a ticking clock novel". In other words, a story wherein some imminent deadline looms to add immediacy and suspense to the action (my words, but I think that pretty much sums up what he was talking about).

Deaver explicitly said that, with regard to the Bond in his novel, the events of the Fleming stories "never happened".
Come to think of it, wouldn't Fleming's Bond have been around 28 at the time of the events described in Casino Royale? Perhaps, in this alternate Bond universe, 007 will eventually encounter Le Chiffre, Hugo Drax, Auric Goldfinger, etc, or their 21st Century dopplegangers.

Yeah, okay. This is fine, it's what he does, but the whole "ticking clock" is such an obsession of movies... Books don't need to be roller-coasters for me to stay involved. I like the passage of time. A sense of place. The evolution of character. Sometimes these compressed time books feel like lessor adventures in the end. But I'm sure he knows what he's doing.Another thing that I recall him saying is that the Bond story will, like just about all of his other books, be what he calls "a ticking clock novel". Approximately 38. Recently I went back through some of Eon's reboot stuff. According to that, Bond joined MI6 at the age of 30 and didn't make 00 till 38 which no doubt he will continue to be.
There's nothing to say that this Bond will even be a 00-agent in the book. This could be before all that, which I'd be happy to read personally. I'd love a book or two that takes place prior to him becoming a 00-agent. Like the first book puts him on the map with M and the second has him becoming a 00-agent.
