Sent an email to Raymond Benson asking if he knew Deaver, and it turns out Benson knows Deaver quite well! (Guess it really shouldn't have been much of a surprise -- they are both men about the lit mystery world). Says Raymond,

"Jeffery Deaver and I are good friends. We served on the Jury (with Val Kilmer!) of the 2005 Noir in Festival (film noir festival) in Courmayeur, Italy, and have participated in many writer conferences together. Great guy."

RB gave me permission to post these pics. Enjoy. (And play nice.)

Charlie Higson and Simon Gardner has also chimed in with support on Twitter.

@monstroso: good luck with the gig. From one Bond scribe to another.

JG was a big fan he would be sending his best wishes if he was still with us. Good luck with the gig from all @johngardnercom

Deaver; "And what do you do for a living, Raymond?" B)

Seriously, though, I wonder if Deaver has read Benson. Depends on what kind of Bond fan he really is. And what he thinks of them. Honestly, obviously.

And before I'm accused of bashing Benson again, I really loved Kilmer's take on the Saint, so what do I know?

I'm wondering if Mr. Deaver has read any Gardner!

Yes, me.

But what an idea. Rebooting a tired, stiff, aged British character with a much younger, more youthful man.

Surprised no one ever done it since...

I'd bet money he's read at least License Renewed. He's a Bond fan and the release of that book was such a big deal... Seems inconceivable he wouldn't have read it. Wouldn't surprise me if he also read some Boysie Oakes books back in the day as well.

Deaver on Benson's A Hard Day's Death:
“A sizzling story full of classic thriller twists, humor, and a dead-on look at the music business.” -- Jeffery Deaver, author of THE SLEEPING DOLL
