Judi Dench wants Emma Thompson as a James Bond baddie

Having played M in the last six James Bond films, Dame Judi Dench has a new mission. The Oscar-winning star tells Mandrake that she is keen to help her fellow actress Emma Thompson achieve her stated ambition of playing a "baddie" opposite Daniel Craig.

"It's such a good idea," Dame Judi told me at the premiere of her latest film, Nine, at the Odeon Leicester Square. "I'd give her a hard time."

The actress, who turns 75 on Wednesday, is expected to reprise her role as the head of MI6 in the 23rd Bond film.

She said she hoped that Barbara Broccoli, the producer, could find a role for Thompson. "I can barely ask for my own part, but it would be very nice," she added.

Well you could always, ya know, watch her in something and then see how you feel. Or you could not bother seeing as it wont happen anyway. But if you did go for it I'd recommend Dead Again. Though not for her, she just happens to be in it.

She's excellent in Stranger than Fiction.

But a Bond baddie? Don't see it.

I don't think that would work.

If you want to see Emma Thompson in action I recommend The Tall Guy, Howard's End, Sense & Sensibility and Love Actually.

By the way - she is also Nanny McPhee.

I first heard of her back when she was married to Kenneth Branaugh. She appeared in his Henry V, Much to Do About Nothing, and Dead Again. She was very, very good in those films as well as other films that I have scene her in such as Sense and Sensibility. I have not her recently except for her small roles in a couple of Harry Potter films.

I trust Judy Dench's judgement and think that she could do quite well as a villian.

Great. We can also have Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Helen Bonham-Carter, Kenneth Branagh, and set the whole thing in Lancashire, 1765. First Sam Mendes, what's next - a Merchant-Ivory Bond? B)

Don´t know about the setting in Lancashire 1765, but this would be the best high profile cast since FRWL with Robert Shaw, Lotte Lenya and Pedro Armendariz!

I'm not very keen on Emma Thompson anywhere near Bond. She is a terrific actress, but I can't exactly pinpoint what it is that I don't like about her.
