I loved Mathis. Did he have to die?
I thought Greenes men did him over, dumped him in the boot and then tipped the police off.

I assumed Greene paid Carlos to get rid of Mathis and Carlos had his two police officers (and possibly more than those two) beat him up badly for a set up in the Range Rover.
Poor Mathis
Yes, a master plan by Greene - rather than directly involve himself in killing an MI6 agent, instead set him up for Mathis' murder and ruin his credibility if he tries to expose any more of Greene's/Quantum's operation.
Yes poor Mathis, not knowing his "old friend" had turned corrupt in the last few years. A bitter irony after he had told Bond :
"When one's young, it seems very easy to distinguish between right and wrong, but as one gets older, it becomes more difficult, the villains and the heroes get all mixed up"
He was right!

I always thought and still think that Carlos had his corrupt cops beat Mathis to a pulp due to the fact that Mathis had divulged his plans to Carlos about Greene. With Carlos having strong beneficial ties (financial) to Greene, Mathis was clearly a factor in what Carlos wanted to get out of his dealing with Greene, so he had him eliminated and in the process set Bond up too.
