Rosamund Pike: 'I have James Bond to thank for my whole career'

WHAT IS more deadly for the career of a British actress: the corset drama or the Bond film? The first is as restrictive as the garment itself, confining its players to a life of simpering under parasols and sipping tea. It is a fate that befell Helena Bonham Carter before Tim Burton cast her as an ape. The second frequently signals the death knell for any serious young actress seeking credibility, as the latest Bond girl, Gemma Arterton, might discover to her cost.

Rosamund Pike had acted in both by the time she was 22. In theory then, her career could have been over before it had begun. Early television appearances saw her in the BBC's Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation Wives And Daughters in 1999, cast as the top-notch equestrian Lady Harriet, followed by a role as the impossibly nice girl Fanny in Love In A Cold Climate, based on Nancy Mitford's tale of English upper-crust life between the wars.

Then, just as those corsets were beginning to choke the life out of Pike, along came the Bond juggernaut, Die Another Day (2002), in which she starred opposite Pierce Brosnan as the Olympic fencing gold medallist Miranda Frost. "I have Bond to thank for my whole career," says Pike.

It says something about her resolve that she turned all of these potential career dead ends to her advantage. While her female Bond co-stars were no less than Madonna and Halle Berry (whose career plummeted afterwards), it was Pike that emerged from the film with her credibility intact. Aided by the fact she sizzled in one of the sauciest bedroom scenes in the franchise's history, Pike was England's latest rose, demure and detached with a cut-glass accent and an icy reputation. This was not the real Rosamund Pike, as she is quick to stress. "I can't bear it when people make assumptions about me. I think post-Bond, people forgot I'm very girly."...

Are you saying she was ugly in that film or that her acting was horrible?

She was one of few good things about DAD, despite the mostly awful lines they gave her. A better performance than Berry's, for sure.

Exactly. Maybe the only good thing.

Plus, she 's a really good actress. I was really impressed with her in Pride and prejudice. Very subtle, but very intense.

And I find her really beautiful. If this world in which we live in was a little more tasteful, she 'd be one of the biggest names out there right now.

I think Rosamund Pike is really, rather wonderful. She's gorgeous, talented and personable.

She has chosen to spend time on the boards and her latest play, Madame de Sade (also starring Judi Dench) is splendid. She was also terrific as Terry Johnson's Hitchcock Blonde.

I think she is content to be a working actress and her steady and varied work (not just in films), whilst not making her a star per se, might ensure career longevity.

After seeing her performance in Doom, all I have to say is thanks a B)ing lot Mr. Bond!

But maybe she shines on stage. I can't say.

I think Hitchcock Blonde really sealed her career. You get more longetivity on the British stage then you do in Hollywood blockbusters.

And, best of all, she can act.

I really wish she got to play Gala Brand and that the character would not have devolved into a ridiculously predictable double-agent spouting flip dialog.

I like Ros Pike. But I don't really think her career owes anything to James Bond. She was doing pretty well before Bond, and she's done pretty well since.

Screw the spotlight; if she's getting paid to act then she's doing just fine, and better than the majority of actors at large.

I agree with 00Twelve. Paris Hilton is in the spotlight. Doesn't mean she's a good actress.

One of the favorites at WhatCulture, she is nonetheless one of the most sorely underrated actresses of our time. Rosamund Pike has a history of appearing in mediocre films and outshining everybody in them, but she’s only really had two terrible movies in her filmography.

The first of those would be Die Another Day (2002), which was actually her big screen debut. The 20th movie in the James Bond franchise, it was widely derided as being a weak entry into the series. Complaints ranged from a lousy plot, crummy villains, Madonna, the theme song (sung by Madonna), excessive CGI, and Madonna. Even Halle Berry – who may be one of the most gifted actresses of all time – was seen as a disappointment by some.

But Rosamund Pike’s performance was the saving grace. Playing the villainous double agent Miranda Frost, she stole each scene she was in (which wasn’t really enough scenes, to be honest).

And her second terrible movie would be 2012′s The Wrath of the Titans, but the less said about that, the better.
