Because I'm on a James Bond kick and happen to love audio (audiobooks, audio dramas, whatever), I've been trying to figure out all the audio versions of Bond that have been done over the years. I spent the last few days compiling a master list and now I turn to you, the CBn reader, to help.

Basically, I need any editions/versions not on this list. I don't want secondhand knowledge or "I figure thats". If you *know* that a particular person read a particular story, let me know and I'll add it to the list. I pretty much scoured amazon.com/co.uk, ebay.com/co.uk, Barnes and Noble, etc., etc. But there's always more out there that doesn't pop up in such searches. (I'm certain there are audiobook versions of the Gardner and Benson books currently showing none, for instance.)

In the following list, I have separated the books by author and then chronologically by title (putting novelizations at the end for those who did both). Abridged versions first, then unabridged. After the audiobooks, I list the radio and read-along adaptations.

A few notes:

  • For those who don't know, Simon Vance and Robert Whitfield are the same person.
  • Editions marked (NLS/BPH) are non-commercially available versions made by the US National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
  • Editions marked (RNIB) are non-commercially available versions from the UK Royal National Institute of Blind People.
  • Octopussy & The Living Daylights / Octopussy usually contains "Octopussy", "The Living Daylights" and "The Property of a Lady", but *not* "007 in New York". I don't think any of the ones listed contain the fourth story.
  • No, I don't have anywhere near this many Bond audiobooks.

So post any information you can add (even spelling errors) or any questions you may have. Here's the list:

Thanks Darth Prefect, I like your specificity!

Now, are you talking just about audio books in some form?
Would you include radio broadcasts (I think you are: Holness and Jayston were), then you have missed a bunch of BBC broadcasts.

Tell me what you are looking for and I will post (if any omissions).

No doubt. As radio broadcasts are usually *not* released commercially, they are difficult to track down and identify. The ones I've listed (Damien Lewis' "Short Stories", Martin Jarvis' "Risico" and the excellent Alex Jennings version of Casino Royale) are all recent, so easy to confirm. I don't think there are any other audio dramas than the ones I've listed, but there have surely been more readings over the years.

Tell me what you are looking for and I will post (if any omissions).

If it's Bond audio and not on the list, I want to know about it.

I can't find any definite information atm, but it appears he only did the four. Listen for Pleasure's website has nothing, Wikipedia has no info on how many, and google largely turns up saying he should have been 007 back in the 80s or his own books. I'll try hunting again in a few.

I have the Rufus Sewell box set (which includes the Samantha Bond TSWLM) and it's excellent, but it doesnt include 'Thunderball' or 'OHMSS';
were those made availabel separately?

any links on where I can get them?

if anyone doesnt have the Sewell recordings, they are excellent!

I found the answer on Ian Ogilvy's official website. He did only do 4 audiobooks as I had expected.

Agreed; they are excellent - don't know about TB but OHMSS is available to download from Audible and iTunes. Despite what's claimed above though I'm sure they're abridged as they come in at around the 3hr mark each whereas the unabridged Robert Whitfield ones are considerably longer.

Nowadays, multiple recordings often come about due to different publishing rights in different areas. For instance, the Harry Potter books are read by Jim Dale in the US, but by Stephen Fry in the UK.

In the case of the Higson books, you also have the situation of separate abridged and unabridged versions. Usually, the abridged audiobook is just the unabridged version edited down. (As, I believe, is the case with the abridged Rufus Sewell versions mentioned above.) Sometimes, as in this case, there is a completely separate abridged recording.

The RNIB and NLS/BPH will often have their own recordings that are not available to the general public.

I would like to note the recent new audio drama adaptation of Goldfinger, once again starring Toby Stephens.

Also, the earlier mention of the German translations of the "Young Bond" books got me checking things out in that area.

Casino Royale, Live and Let Die (Leben und sterben lassen), Dr. No (Jagt Dr. No) and Goldfinger all had abridged readings by Hannes Jaenicke

Narrated film soundtrack "audio dramas" (Original- Hörspiel zum Film, as they are called) were released for From Russia, with Love (Liebes-Grüsse aus Moskau) and The World is Not Enough (Die Welt ist nicht genug).

The Higson German titles are as follows:
Stille Wasser sind tödlich (Silverfin)
Zurück kommt nur der Tod (Blood Fever)
GoldenBoy (Double or Die)
Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist tödlich (Hurricane Gold)
Der Tod kennt kein Morgen (By Royal Command)

They were all translated by Petra Koob-Pawis, except the last, which was translated by Silvia Schroeer.

Time for another quick update:

First, as had been mentioned earlier, it now seems clear that the Rufus Sewell editions *are* all abridged.

Next, the Samantha Bond version of 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is read by Bond *and* Rufus Sewell.

'Moonraker' is read by Roger Blake, not "Robert Blake".

Blake also read 'Dr. No', 'You Only Live Twice' and 'The Man with the Golden Gun'.

'GoldenEye' was available unabridged read by David Fox.

'The World is Not Enough' read by John Kenneth was also available unabridged.

'Devil May Care' read by Tristan Layton is abridged. An unabridged version was read by John Lee.

I also wanted to note that there were a few multi-packs available:

JOHN KENNETH:
-The James Bond Collection 1: From Russia, with Love / Dr. No / Goldfinger
-The James Bond Collection 2: Thunderball / On Her Majesty's Secret Service / You Only Live Twice

SIMON VANCE:
-Live and Let Die / Casino Royale
-From Russia, with Love / Moonraker

The Vance collections are the same as the standalone unabridged releases. I'm not sure about the Kenneths.

Was it released commercially on CD? If so, I wasn't aware of it.

I happen to think it's great. Jayston has become one of my favorite Bonds and I think the production values were excellent, as well as the script.

Recent eBay items show that in addition to GoldenEye and DAD, Samantha Bond also read an abridged version of The World is Not Enough. Did she also read Tomorrow Never Dies? Anyone know? Can't find confirmation on that.

And speaking of confusing issues with Samantha Bond, I recently got the "12 Classic Ian Fleming Novels" CD tin, the one with the Rufus Sewell abridged readings, as well as Samantha Bond on The Spy Who Loved Me. But on amazon.co.uk, there's this:

http://www.amazon.co...e/dp/0141802987

Which while listing Sewell *and* Bond as readers, clearly show cover art mentioning *only* Sewell.

Does anyone have a version of TSWLM read by Rufus Sewell? Could this be early art from before they realized he wouldn't be reading that one? Should I have waited until I listened to the whole thing just in case Sewell makes an appearance? (I'm in the middle of Jeremy Northam reading Devil May Care, but I'll try this one next.)

Count me confused. I'm already going to have to chase down Sewell's Thunderball and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Do I also have to go after this version of TSWLM? Buying from the US, I'd hate to get this one and find it is just the Samantha Bond one again.

Oh, and Richard E. Grant also read Goldfinger. Just realized I missed that one.

'James Bond in World and Popular Culture: The Films Are Not Enough' contains a "James Bond Audiography". As I just received my review copy the other day, so let's put it to some good use...

- Samantha Bond reading TND is not mentioned anywhere, as is - interestingly - Samantha Bond reading DAD. A quick web search also brought no results for the latter. You certain it exists? Two versions of DAD mentioned, one read by Michael Page, one by Robert Whitfield.

- '12 Classic Ian Fleming Novels' is (unfortunately) only mentioned as a whole (36 CD box), with no listing of the novels or who reads what. All other mentioned versions of TSWLM are read by women (Nadia May, Rula Lenska), which makes sense. Found a description on abebooks which clearly states "11 books read by Sewell, TSWLM read by Sam Bond".

- no mention of individual TB or OHMSS (which obviously are not contained in that box) readings by Sewell mentioned in that list.

Hope that helps.

That's just me trusting in the information above. I can't find anything, either. (Then again, there are several I didn't find when looking until they popped up on eBay.)

Yeah, it's pretty clear that the one in "12 Classic..." is just Samantha Bond. But what of that ebay.co.uk item? It *clearly* shows Rufus Sewell and at least one Marketplace seller mentions him by name. I'm half inclined to buy the damn thing to find out for myself...

- no mention of individual TB or OHMSS (which obviously are not contained in that box) readings by Sewell mentioned in that list.

Those are clearly available on amazon.co.uk, so I'm sure they exist. There must have been a reason (SPECTRE?) why they were left out of the tin.

Hope that helps.

Every little bit does.

I'm seriously thinking of creating a web site devoted to this topic, as there doesn't seem to be a home for this information anywhere on the web. It would be structured similarly to my primary web site, The Hunt for Edward D. Wood, Jr. (www.edwoodonline.com), with divisions by author, reader and format.

If I go ahead with those plans, I will be sure to post it here and continue to keep everyone informed on updates.
