Too much flash-cutting in 'Quantum of Solace' for Sir Roger Moore

The new Bond films are too modern for classic 007 actor Sir Roger Moore but he is a fan of brooding Bond Daniel Craig.

Roger told Absolute Radio: "I enjoy Daniel Craig, I think he's a damn good Bond but the film as a whole, there was a bit too much flash cutting for me."

He continued: "I thought Casino Royale was better. It was just like a commercial of the action. There didn't seem to be any geography and you were wondering what the hell was going on but there you are, call me old fashioned and an old fuddy duddy!"

Sir Roger was calling the radio show via Skype while on holiday in the Seychelles and he revealed that he's the fan of video calling. He said: "I try to get people in the bath actually!"

Who's Calling Christian runs until March 25 on the Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show, giving listeners the chance to win £20,000 for them and £20,000 for a celeb's chosen charity.

Agree with Sir Rog completely. The flash-cutting, especially in the pre-titles was my biggest complaint about the film.

Seconded. The flash-cutting gets to a point where it's too ridiculous.

Have to agree. I absolutely adore Quantum of Solace, but the editing (most prominently in the first half of the film) is the biggest downfall for me.

I didn't find the editing that bad, really.

The only thing that truly bothered me was Bond climbing up the drain pipe in the Siena chase and the boat flip.

Is the car chase not one of the finest action sequences in Bond history?

I would agree with the boat flip. In the trailer it looks kind of cool. But in the film, doesn't work for me. How on earth the boat went from behind Bond, to in front of him, I will never know...B)

It is funny this argument will run and run about the editing in QOS. I too agree with Roger Moore. I saw it again last night on Blu-ray and I find the editing a total mess. In the car chase I can kind of forgive it, because the effect is to thrust you straight into the confusion of the car chase. But the rooftop chase is a real mess. Also the opera shoot out is not only confusing but pretentious in it's cross-cutting. But hey, some people love it. But it is interesting how this seems to be the thing people keep coming back to time and again. I wonder what tactic the next film will take in its action sequences when even the pro-camp must admit this has been the main criticism of the film by many sources.

Atmosheric anomaly!! LOL Mharkin!!!
As for the car chase, I probably would have liked it a little more if the action had slowed down a little more. Just to give you an example, I can see the moment when Bond loses his door, but once the car chase is over, and he's in that building, when he gets out of the car, I keep thinking that the car door is going to open (because I still think that the door's there!). :)

I’m a big QoS fan, I’ve seen it countless times and know almost every scene off by heart. So don’t take this as bashing, ok? I do agree with the editing complaints in certain scenes. Most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't. I also wish the camera pulled back occasionally and wasn’t so zoomed in.

As much as I like QOS, I don't want them to take such chances again because it could damage the franchise long term. I hate saying this because I would like them to continue taking risks, but I think it is far too risky to do so.
No more Brosnan -era bollocks , please. Just make a good old fashioned Bond film with Craig. I could cope with that.

Did anybody else notice the sloppy editing in that article? Moore says he likes Casino Royale better than QoS, but the cutline under his picture reads "Sir Roger Moore isn't a fan of the latest Bond films." Typical tabloid type thing, trying to play up the negative angle, even if there isn't much to play up.

Sir Roger is right on the money.

I got the DVD yesterday and I only had time to watch the opening, and after a few viewings I do think the car chase works in its own way (I actually enjoyed it B)). Here's hoping the other action scenes make more sense after repeated viewings.

It is a shame-- all you really needed is like 3 sec longer on the car chase and you would have a better understanding.

And the effect they were going for would be the same.

I agree with Sir Roger. The editing is distracting most of the time.

But that is not the main problem with QOS. The editing is just there to cover up the real problems (a clear lack of originality).

I'll admit, I am not a fan of that scene. Someone like John Woo could've made that work, but as it is now, it's choppy, awkward, and as you said, pretentious.

I disagree. I feel that while QUANTUM oozes originality, it's editing is the major flaw that gets in the way.

I agree. It is "not one of the finest action sequences in Bond history". B)

I'm also with Sir Roger on the editing. There are times where there is rapid editing between virtually the same shot (almost the same angle, same people, etc.) and it's disorienting.

I gotta agree. I'm not some super hyper MTV generation kid who can't look at a frame for more than 5 seconds. I hate that kind of editing and filming that makes a whole movie look like a bad music video.

Remember back in the days of Hitchcock, Vidor, etc where you actually *gasp* saw what was going on? The best directed action flick in years was Rambo 4 and it's because you SAW the action.
