Someone mentioned him in another topic as an idea for the new Q actor, and in my opinion, it would be a great way to 'reinvent' the character, just as Craig said. What do you think?

Yep, I think that Hugh Laurie would certainly be an interesting idea for the "new" Q, and he could do something special with the character.

By the way, I expect there is already another Q thread kicking about somewhere which the mods could merge this with if necessary. :(

Yes, he's good for the role. Very British, good actor, around 50 years old. Perfect!

At the other end of the spectrum (the absolutely worst thing I can imagine) we see a young nervous chap constantly babbling about technical stuff. You know, as Kevin Weisman in Alias.

With respect to the literary distinction between the armorer and the quartermaster, I'd like EON to once again have them as separate characters, as Fleming had, and have Hugh Laurie as Major Boothroyd, the armorer.

He´s ingenious as Dr House, but I wouldn´t cast someone who is already famous with a certain role. Everyone seeing the movie would expect House-like jokes. I prefer an unknown actor, as Llewellyn was before FRWL.

No. That casting makes no sense whatsoever. Just because an actor toys with gadgets and technology in a TV show doesn't make him a shoe-in for Bond's Quartermaster.

??

I agree with this general statement, but... does Laurie toy with gadgets and technology in House MD? :(

He's using this walking cane of his, juggling with it. And then there is this peanut stunt he's performing at times. Must qualify as gadget and high-tech these days...

Depends what direction they decide to go in for Bond 23. If they go in a Pierce-type direction then Hugh Laurie would work. If they stay deadly serious then I'm really not sure if the whole character of Q is workable.

Although I think Hugh could be good as Q, I'd rather see an unknown actor play Major Boothroyd, and keep Q branch as Q branch (more of what we saw in CR with the defib scene)- Boothroyd is just the Armorer within Q branch.

My 2cc's.

Great actor and I think he'd make a great Q. In my opinion, his range is such that the role could go anywhere. The part he plays in House, of course, is very different from what he did in the remake of Flight of the Phoenix.

As to the original intent of Ian Fleming, yes, there is the gun discussion in Doctor No. But even w/ Daniel Craig now playing James Bond, the films are a distant blend of the first books and the evolution seen through EON Productions over the years.

Why not Jeeves?

Why not Michael G. Wilson? Q has short appearances in every movie, Wilson has short appearences in every movie, so Wilson could play Q.

i wouldnt mind the return of qbranch, closer to what it was in the books. i dont think a character named q is really needed though.

There are plenty better than Hugh Laurie, no matter how much I like him, if you look. I agree that he would be terrific but concur that an unknown is needed for the role.

Now there's an idea, I say...

But don't call him , or anyone in the role Q, because Q is dead.

Yeap! I'ma fan of House MD and I think that he'd look great as Q if he gets a more ironic voice to Q like he does with House!

As a fan - absolutely brilliant casting choice, IMHO.

If I was a producer? - No way, simply because I'm willing to bet that Laurie would end up asking for too much money nowdays, considering the success of House.

For the return of Q (or Boothroyd as the case may be) I would just like to see a brief scene in which Bond is given his equipment and then gets on with the job in hand.

No fuss, no big issue made of the scene, and no blowing up the part into Judi Dench style proportions.

In respect of this I don’t think we really need a Hugh Laurie, or any other famous actor for that matter.

I see what you mean Eurospy, but can he really ask for that much money? After all, he's a TV show star, not an A-list actor (and I'm sure John Cleese asked for much more money than Laurie could ever dream of asking :().

Too old and too MERLIN (which would really be the same part).

I think none of us will really second guess which actress plays Q anyway....

Tv or not Laurie is seen as a more traditional leading man type nowadays thanks to HOUSE and he'd be expected to be playing a version of that character with a British accent.

Give us a bonafide character actor and an ORIGINAL take on 'Q' (Boothroyd or not) if the concept does indeed return.
