So it's James Nesbitt is it? Damn. I was so hoping for Robson Green.

James Nesbitt or Robson Green? Dear God, that's like being asked if you'd like to be shot or poisoned. Though if either were cast, I think I'd ask for both gun and poison just to make sure I didn't have to sit through the result...

I guess I should have put a winking smiley with that. Didn't expect anyone to take it seriously.

I work in television. And, trust me, I have heard far more bizarre casting suggestions than that... B)

I don't think it is Nesbitt because Ian said he is known on both sides of the pond. I have no idea who James Nesbitt is.

The name sounded familiar when he was first mentioned, but I couldn't think of what I'd seen him in. But then, I tend to watch a lot more foreign productions than domestic, so it's possible I saw him something that never quite officially made its way over here.

Of the two I think I may even prefer Nesbitt, oddly. He had that kind of self-confidence and style you might associate with the Saint when he was Hyde in 'Jekyll'. I'm not convinced it actually is him, though- I wouldn't describe him as known across the Atlantic.

I like Nesbitt, although aware that many seem to hate him. I'd never have thought of him as I don't think he has the suaveness that I associate with the Saint. But I would definitely like to see how he would play the role!

Watched a few episodes of The Philanthropist. It's good. A bit like The Saint. There is a very cool wink given to The Saint in the first episode. It will do well with the young audience.

In my case it's not hate so much as numbness. I find it hard to get excited about the potential casting of someone who seems to be on half the times you turn on the telly.

Wouldn't this be a golden opportunity to have a fairly unknown actor in a star-making performance? Like that Roger guy, you know.

I would be content with Dougray Scott as an interesting pick with potential; he has a Saintly look about him at least.

Frankly, I find it hard to believe Ian Dickerson would be quite as positive about the casting if it were James Nesbitt, but I could be wrong.

I can't evaluate Robson Green fairly due to his singing career, which still makes me want to give him a slap...

So in which of the following BBC drama's can we expect our future Holy one to be seen?

I've borrowed these from Mr. Dickersons Link, quite a few names that would do quite well. The least would be mr. Dougray who has always failed to impress me in any way. Him being the next Simon Templar would be a big dissapointment for me.

FIVE BIG NEW DRAMAS FROM THE BBC

Freefall
Dominic Savage has created the BBC's big recession drama, a semi-improvised saga exploring the fallout from the credit crunch. Aidan Gillen ('The Wire', 'Queer as Folk') heads the cast as a banker with too many dodgy bundles of debt. Also stars Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike. Broadcast in August

Day of the Triffids
John Wyndham's sci-fi classic updated by 'ER' writer Patrick Harbinson, with a stellar cast that includes Dougray Scott, Eddie Izzard, Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson. But can they make the killer plants scary? Broadcast in autumn

Desperate Romantics
The tangled lives and loves of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as Peter Bowker ('Occupation') dramatises Franny Moyle's engrossing biography of the ground-breaking Victorian artists. Rafe Spall and Tom Hollander wear the facial hair. Broadcast in July

Defying Gravity
Aptly enough, the BBC is only one of several partners in this 13-part co-production about an international space mission. Set a short while into the future, Ron Livingston from 'Sex and the City' stars, and it's exec-produced by Michael Edelstein from 'Desperate Housewives'. Broadcast in August

Emma
Costume drama is what the BBC has always done best, but they will hope that Jane Austen-fatigue hasn't set in as Romola Garai (above) of 'Atonement', takes the title role in Austen's comic masterpiece – serialised for the first time since the 1970s. Broadcast in autumn

Rosamund Pike, Eddie Izzard, and Dougray Scott were the only names I recognized there. Of those, only Izzard and Scott fit, what with them both being male, and they both fall in line with Ian's clues. Mind, it might also be Ron Livingston (haven't heard of him, but again, I'm a bad benchmark). Anyone know how good of an actor he is?

Hope they stay true to the character.

‘That’s right. I took a bullet to the chest and one in the back.’

I'm right with you. Ian's hints are pointing closer and closer to Dougray Scott for me. Ian said he was known in the US as well as the UK. Most of the other names mentioned are people i have never heard of.

Tybre, Ron Livingston was in Office Space (which is, coincidentally, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year).

Also, does anyone else have TCM? I just caught a marathon of classic Saint movies this afternoon, starring George Sanders; very good.

Im in the UK but have them on DVD. Great to watch.

I watched the Saint marathon whenever I wasn't away from a TV (which I made sure wasn't often). Sanders was very good indeed, though I still place Ogilvy tops and Rog as #2. Sanders is #4 on my list now, with Hugh Sinclair (who was positively fantastic in The Saint Meets the Tiger, I thought) has earned the title of #3.

Sanders better than Ian I feel . He was far more ruthless. Just my thought. Hope the new Saint is a bit tough.

I caught a bit of that! For some reason, the TV menu critic gave it 1 and a half stars, but, from what I saw, it wasn't so bad, except that Hugh Sinclair had a rather annoying mustache.

His moustache annoyed me for all of about ten minutes. Got used to it. And it's not as bad as Andrew Clarke's...

True, but a mustache is a mustache, and one place it should not be is on the Saint's face.

You guys are lucky to have seen the Andrew Clarke movie. Well, i'm not sure "lucky" is the word considering most people's opinion of it, but I still hope to see it one day.

I can't imagine them casting a transvestite stand-up comedian in this kind of iconic "hero" role. Love Izzard, he is extremely talented and very, very funny, and it could be interesting to see him play this type of character (though not Simon Templar), but I suspect the only place it could happen is in some parallel dimension.

I'd be interested in seeing Dougray Scott in a Saint series. I always found him a bit bland, but maybe I've just seen him in the wrong movies.

BTW, is Roger's son Geoffrey Moore still a part of making this series?

Oops, I just read that as "an actor producer" by mistake. B)

Has Jack Davenport's name been mentioned? He's known on both sides etc.

(Apologies if so, the search facility thinks not)

Good call. I like him but doesn't seem to fit the info Ian gave. He is well known in the States.
Ian's last bit of info was the Golf tournament didn't have Nigel.
