How is the acting in QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than that in CASINO ROYALE? Examples, please.

Well, of course, it's all subjective. Which is why I have such an issue with "Best Actor" tripe at industry back-slapping events like the Oscars and the Baftas and whatever other nonsense the Hollywood PR machines foist on us.

But, if pushed, I would say I found more subtlety and emotional truth to the performances as a whole in QoS than CR. And that, I imagine, is the difference between Marc Forster and the workmanlike Martin Campbell.

Craig is slightly better. Dench is slightly better. Gianinni is significantly better. Kurylenko is better than Green. Amalric and Mikklesen cancell eachother out.

Kurylenko is better than Green.

Sorry, not with you on that one. Again, it's purely subjective. In fact, the two characters are so different from each other it's a little hard to compare their performances.

OK...Still, that's 3 out of 4 in favour of Q0S for you, then...with Amalric v Mikklesen being a draw?

The dvd/Blu-ray is selling like hot cakes...as if it were going out of style.

So much for Q0S being a success only on opening weekend.

Quantum tops!

This wouldn't be happening if the movie was a 'dissapointment'.

Funny how the likes of Bonita have vanished into oblivion.

It's Bond.

It's going to make money regardless.

Die Another 'freaking' Day made bags of money.

Diamonds are for goddamn Forever made money in its day.

I don't make a habit of snarky posts so forgive me if I come off as abrasive, but could we cool it with the little snappy 'ha! look who isn't talking anymore!' comments? Really, please?

Its said to be the BEST Blue-ray sales start EVER - BETTER than The Dark Knight.

So - even though its Bond and is likely to have good sales - THIS is a bit more, I would say...people, who have seen the film or people who have read the reviews, heard the critics buy those DVD´s like crazy. Appearently its a lot more liked than its reputation seems at times. B)

Valid points. However it's just as valid to point to the DVD/BluRay sales as significant, especially in light of all the "bad word of mouth" comments QOS has gotten (and still gets). Be nice if this buried that obviously fallacious POV once and for all, but I suppose those who don't think too highly of QOS will still find something new to hang their hat on re the general public wasn't too thrilled with it either.

However some fans think of it, QOS has been a big hit and continues to be so in the home market. Shocking, positively shocking. B)

QOS was a MASSIVE hit for a Bond movie. It was and is a HUGE success.

For Q0S to trump CR at the box office during a quarter when the recession deepened which witnessed the public slashing it's discretionary spending on movies (as per post #1239) says it all.

Those who say Q0S was a box office dissapointment are plain liars and should be ignored.

The good times are back in the Bond business and let's not let the handful of party poopers spoil the sweet taste of victory.

And I'm not going to let that some unreasonable QOS fanatic, spoil my judgment of this movie, which is far from the best of the series, but also far from the worst.

What I'm saying here, is that with an impolite fan like you, who isn't able to accept even the slightest criticism against his favourite film, without getting all mad, sometimes I have felt the necessity of point out the bad things about this movie, and as a consequence of that I have started to appreciate less this movie, than what I originally did it; so to avoid this in the future (now that I own the DVD), I decided to stop having useless discussions with you.

P.S.: HildbrandRarity, this is not some kind of battle to employ terms as 'sweet taste of victory', or to insult people calling them 'plain liars and should be ignored'.

HildebrandRarity is, to quote Craig's Bond, a bloody idiot, pretty much picking on fights with everyone who didn't think QoS was perfect. Swallowed the artsy farsty PR crap from the presskit hook, line and sinker and decided he loved the film halfway through watching the teaser trailer.
QoS hasn't and won't be trumping CR theatrically. It's already out from most markets and even if it had, at fourty minutes shorter and as action-packed as it is, it should have beaten CR regardless of recession issues. That is, if it HAD been a better film. It just got carried by its predecessor, which surprising a lot of "veterans" in these fora found boring and overlong, as opposed to normal moviegoers, which were thrilled by it being more than your usual Bond movie. It should be the opposite, with general audiences being dumber and Bond fans having more sophisticated tastes. QoS is OK but falls short from being a Bond movie and merely contents itself with being an action movie, all form and no substance.

Absolutely. You're perfectly right. I myself have mixed views on the film, but I went out and purchased the 2-disc edition. a)There were things I liked about the film and  a 'mixed' Bond film is superior to about 70-80% of the other action films the studios deliver.

My post was more a whiny little complaint about how we seem to have a rough time getting along when it comes to merits or lack thereof of QOS. You love it? Great! I was mixed? Who cares, I still bought the DVD!

All I'm saying, and feel free to ignore it or disagree, is that I've noticed a few, not a lot (don't worry), but a few posts from members that really hinted certain undertones of either frustration or lack of respect towards others. I find posts like that a bit disappointing to come across. I'm in no mood to start naming people. If you read their posts you can tell who I might be talking about. I think my post was me venting a little bit of frustration of my own. Apologies if I got on anyone's nerves.

After a few viewings people have probably warmed up to it a little bit. Even though I'm not ready to shout 'I love QOS!' just yet, I'd be lying if I said I haven't started to like it at least a little bit more by now. I'd be curious to see if, some years down the road, if becomes a new Licence to Kill.

Back in '89, people really weren't all that warm to the film (I think the reception was alright in Europe however) but now in 2009, a lot of fans like it very much. Maybe the same fate is reserved for QOS.

...but QOS was a massive hit for a Bond movie during a terrible quarter for spending on movies at the theatre. LTK,on the other hand, was a massive box office dissapointment in the US. I don't see the comparrison.

In adition, QOS was responsible for Craig being voted top 'action hero of 2008'. LTK did nothing of the like for Dalton back in 1989. Both years had Indy and Batman and Bond...but this time it's Craig who has been hailed.

Although in both cases Bond has been the least successful ...

Indy 4 - $700.000.000 +
TDK - $900.000.000 +
QoS - $500.000.000 +

That's because Bond doesn't wear a cape and cowl and tights and because Bond does not deal with the spirit world and aliens.

I suggest you take Bond as a % of Indy and Batman for both 1989 and 2008. You'll probably note that the 2008 version of Bond did better as a percentage than the 1989 version.

PS

Q0S was $580,000,000 (ie closer to $600 mil than $500 mil)

The bottom line is Q0S did much better than LTK. Q0S has been one of the most successful Bonds since the Connery era whereas LTK has been one of the least successful ones.

Better? How about different. MR made tons, yet is a pretty poor Bond film according to some. Lots of blockbusters are crap, and lots of very good films make far less than the blockbusters.

For my money, QOS is an adult Bond that translated well to both markets. Yeah it made a bit less than it could've had EON wanted to go balls-out kiddie with it, but on the flip side we get the most sophisticated Bond since OMHSS. I'll take that trade-off anyday. B)

Q0S is the most financially successful Bond film in recent memory - inspite of the fact that it was released in the WORST QUARTER FOR SPENDING ON MOVIES EVER!

The worst quarter ever for movies is not to blamed on the recession. Which seems to be the favourite excuse for lower movie attendance.

Blame it on movies like QoS which just didn't bring the crowds out.

Before you get agitated, let me reveal something to you about these crowds.

February 2009 was HUGE at the box-office. The recession was not over, in fact it had gotten two months worse since December.

Here is the proof with the numbers.

http://www.boxoffice...?id=2555&p=.htm

So how was the worst quarter ever, with a Bond movie, superceded by the best month ever, without needing the higher returns from a Bond movie? (since they had already practically evaporated by the time February 2009 rolled around)

I'd like to see anyone dispell the myth that February 2009 grossed $770m and proved that movies can make good money once they connect with crowds. In spite of a recession, which was the favourite whipping-horse for certain apologists who felt that was to blame for the Bond box-office, which, as a consolation, still barely squeaked by to nip the 'highest' 007 gross ever in the USA (and could have been more if it was better).

Have a Good Friday and hot cross bun on me. B)

You can't really compare Nov 2008 with Feb 09.

November came on the heels of a Stock Market Crash which totally crushed Consumer Confidence and Consumer Discretionary Spending. By Feb 09 Global Central banks had injected tons of liquidiy into the financial system and the new Obama administration was outling it's spending programme and bailout packages. The world changed between Oct 08 and Feb 09.

The fact of the matter is:

Q0S is the BEST PACED Bond film ever.

Q0S is the BEST ACTED Bond film ever.

Q0S is the most financially successful Bond film in recent memory - inspite of the fact that it was released in the WORST QUARTER FOR SPENDING ON MOVIES EVER!

I doesn't matter how many times you repeat this with big letters. The fact of CR being more popular with Bond fans, critics- and you stretch it- with general moviegoers, still remains the same. The first you can see it in the polls of this same site, the second you watch it in RTT.com, and third (even if you're in denial using your very personal 'statistics'), you can prove it with the worldwide BO.

Of course, you're going to respond to this, saying that your very carefully picked numbers about economy are fact, but can you also deny the biggger popularity of CR over QOS, with Bond fans and critics???

I know that CR is 'more popular' with critics and on RottenTomatoes than Q0S.

Why would I deny the existence of popularity numbers and the Tomatometer?

Is Dog Bond a posting member, anymore?

Does a dog have fleas?

Will Bond 23 be released in 2011* and will Tom Ford be providing the pocket handkerchiefs**?

Did I not request the deep-sixing of this thread pages/months ago?

Does this thread provide me with even an ounce of amusement, anymore?

Will Qwerty have another Quantum Of Solace Box Office "update"?

* If so, will it be spring, summer or fall?

** If so, will it continue to be a pocket square or will it be folded as a scallop or will it be Tips Up***?

***as opposed to tits up?
