I have 40G model which is about 6 months old. I watched Thunderball (DVD) on it last night. That was fine. then I decided to watch Casino Royale on Blu Ray, it played for about 10 mnutes then it crashed, I thought to myself fair enough as this has happened before, I restarted the system and suddenly it won't let my play PS3 Games or Blu Ray discs. It plays DVDs no problem but when it comes to playing Games or Blu it won't. I keep getting an error message.

Now I've:
Completely Restored the System
Turned off BD 24hz.
Restored Default Settings.

Nothing worked. Could someone please help me! Quantum of Solace: The Game will be out soon and I haven't got a PS3. :(

This happened to me just a few weeks ago. Apparently, the 40Gb version has a problem with updating the software. When I downloaded the latest update, it not only killed being able to play Blu-Ray, but anything else. Also, the laser can get frazzled or goes out of alignment. Either way, I would suggest that you contact them.

Please check out this site for the number you'll need to telephone. You'll need the serial number (it's at the back), and no proof of purchase is required. Two days later you'll get a replacement in a box FOC. Just hand the driver your old PS3, and that's it. (only the PS3 is exchanged - no need to hand over and cables etc)

If you get any problems, please drop me a PM. :(

Good luck.

Cheers,

Ian

1. Unplug your PS3.

2. Throw it in the bin.

3. Now go buy a Wii or 360 instead.

Or go outside and play football, or meet people, breathe fresh air, run about a bit.

Etc.

Would the fact that my PS3 is a freebie make a difference? I got it free with AOL broadband wireless plus.

I would think not, as Sony supplies the warranty and not AOL. :)

My mother has decided to buy me a brand new 80gb one. :(

She said if I was going to get it replaced, she was going to do it. :)

But you may as well get your old one exchanged for free. Sell it to Jim, them ask your mum to pay the difference. Or better still. Sell Jim and keep the knackered PS3. :(

I had some problems just a week or two ago with my PS3 and playing certain BD movies, I did all the steps you mentioned without any success. Then I just unplugged the power for a few seconds, plugged it back in and it was back up and working like normal. So, simple solution that'll hopefully help.

I am furious! I've had a new PS3 since Febuary, and last night, the EXACT same thing has happened that happened with my old one. (See first post for details)

That's it, I've had it with PS3's! As soon as possible, I'm going to take it back to the store and demand my money back. I'm going to buy a Blu Ray Player instead, and a 360 when I have some extra cash, because the fact that this has happened twice to me is really beyond a joke.

Sony is incompetent, I still don't see why this pathetic console hasn't been discontinued, considering that many people around the globe has experienced the same thing as me.

PS3's are pathetic, end of.
I'm so getting a 360. I hear they're a lot more capable of playing a damn game.

They are indeed and the xbox repair thing is alot better from the sounds of it. I got the red ring, just sign onto the website, put your xbox details etc in. I got it back in about 2-3 weeks
