Fantastic news. Wasn't expecting it to be quite this big a seller, but there you go!

From what I've read somewhere today (sorry, can't find it right now) it was also the most reviewed book of the last weekend. But that's hardly surprising considering the hype.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between Hatchards Ltd edition (500 copies) sold for 100 pounds and the Waterstone Ltd Edition (1000 copies) also sold for 100 pounds

As far as I know, these are the special versions of Devil May Care currently available:

  • Bentley Special Series (300 copies worldwide)
  • Signed/Slipcased Limited Edition (500 copies worldwide)
  • Signed regular UK hardback (1,500 of these were signed by Faulks for independent bookstores)

Same book. We've been calling it the "red case" limited edition. 500 copies. Hatchards got some. Waterstones got some.

Re the signed UK first (1500 copies). Don't let anyone tell you the book sold for

DMC is a success, that's great news. Hopefully this warrants a novel of higher quality that keeps the reader's interest.

The thing that worries me is, I hope all the non literature fans don’t think this bland novel is as good as it gets, and hopefully go back to the real thing.

'Devil May Care' Is Penguin's All Time High, 007 novel is publisher's fastest selling hardback fiction title

Does the above title tell all?

I've been buying books for about 45 years, and until Penguin re-published the Fleming books in hardback a few years ago, I had never noticed anything by them in hardback before. To me, Penguin has always been a paperback publisher, so, have they even published that many hardbacks?

lol, that's a good question
Although Penguin is more visible on paperbacks, they also publish hardbacks. Here's a list of their bestellers in each format (in 2007): http://www.penguin.c...07HBTradePB.pdf
The hardbacks included for instance Jamie Oliver's "Cook with Jamie", which must have sold quite a number of copies (if I judge by the number of my friends who have interest in Jamie Oliver  ).

Just got back from Africa assignment. I'm home(US) for a few weeks before heading out again. The book arrived yesterday, same day as my return. Karma, eh?

I'll start it today and should have it read before I leave again.

Cheers,

HAT-TRICK: DEVIL MAY CARE IS STILL NUMBER ONE

Devil May Care, the James Bond novel written to mark Ian Fleming's centenary, is the number one hardback novel in the UK bestseller lists for week ending June 21.

This is its third week running at number one.

It is also the overall UK number one bestseller in all categories.

It is the fastest selling hardback novel in Penguin's history.

This is a phenomenal result. Even with the massive wave of publicity, one wonders if IFP expected these kind of sales.

It'll be interesting to see how IFP follow this up without Faulks on board.

I say they should do a short story collection, ala For Your Eyes Only, with each story written by a different author -- we get Nick Hornby's Bond, then Bret Easton Ellis' Bond, then Clive Barker's, etc. Then maybe the fans won't get so outraged that it does or doesn't advance the character from Fleming's vision, and can simply enjoy contrasting and comparing the different takes.

That's a very good idea with good reasoning behind it. I like it, we'd get more stories as well.

I love the idea, but is a short story collection likely to be a chart topper? I can't imagine so, but are there any recent examples?

With Bond, "name" authors and decent publicity I'm sure it would sell well.

There'd have to be some co-ordination between them if written at the same time just to ensure no coincidental overlap or duplication.
