British actor to play role of British Foreign Secretary

According to his official website, British actor Tim Pigott-Smith has been cast in QUANTUM OF SOLACE as the British Foreign Secretary. Coincidentally enough, he played the head of the fictional MI7 in the Purvis and Wade spy spoof JOHNNY ENGLISH.

British Foreign Secretary? Is that like Minister of Defence? If not, is it the British equivalent to the United States' Secretary of State?

Equivalent to the US Secretary of State, yes

The full title of the office is "Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs".

From Wikipedia:

"The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, commonly referred to as the Foreign Secretary, is a member of the United Kingdom Government heading the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and responsible for relations with foreign countries, matters pertaining to the Commonwealth of Nations and the UK's overseas territories and the promotion of British interests abroad."

I suppose he'll be involved in Bond's deployment to Bolivia.

I don't think so, that would presumably be an internal MI6 matter, as has been the case with all of Bond's missions in the past. I think the Foreign Secretary is more likely to be involved in some sort of disciplinary capacity against Bond.

Sort of like in Johnny English?

I buy that. Surely he was in the meeting after the embassy shootup making him aware of Bond's recklessness. And I'd imagine Bond is going to mess up again in Quantum of Solace prompting the Foreign Secretary to pay M and/or Bond a visit.

He reffers to Quantum of Solace as Bond 22? He must of being aware of his part in the movie for quite some time then.

I expect that he filmed his scenes (and he's probably not in that many) in London during January when the movie was still known as BOND 22. I'm hoping to receive a bit more information on what exactly they shot during the first few weeks very soon, so keep your eyes open for that!

Thats probably what happened. I don't expect his role to be that big, he's probably finshed all of his scenes now anyway.

Wonderful casting news. I doubt that Pigott-Smith will have much screentime, but it's great that he's onboard. He's probably best known for his superb role in the classic 1980s British miniseries THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN, and, incidentally, I think that, back in the day, he'd have been an excellent choice for Bond.

He was also Thallo in "Clash of the Titans!" I remember seeing him in V/Vendetta & thought his name was familiar.

I recognise his name very well, but having seen him I don't remember him quite so well. I am sure I would know him from Clash of the Titans and Remains of the Day, plus he has the very distinctive voice of the narrator in A Year with the Royal Family.

One of the few things I liked in this mess.

Imagine if it was Bond that walked in to a classic office like that, with Tim Pigott-Smith playing 'M'. Just like the old days :(

I like the sound of that. Maybe if he decides to return in Bond 23, something along the lines of this could be used. It would just show how dangerous Quantum is. :(

Wasn't his scene with Judi Dench marvellous? Wonderful to see a couple of old pros at work.

Yes, that was a very good scene.

It was interesting to see M worried about her meeting with him.

Didn't know he was in it before I saw QoS. A pleasant surprise.
I'm also old enough to remember him from Jewel in the Crown, which was a huge hit in Europe.

Yeah, It was a great little scene.

I also found his line "Bond, is running wild!" Trailer/TV Spot worthy aswell. :(

It would be brilliant if this were a running joke where M would be forced into having a meeting with him, due to Bonds incompetence in future movies. :)
