Paramount Pictures has set Thursday, May 22, 2008 as the release for the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie, which the studio is now officially referring to as the Fourth Installment of the Indiana Jones Adventures.

The picture maintains the Memorial Day weekend release strategy of the last two "Indiana Jones" movies, and it mirrors the last two "Star Wars" movies and The Matrix Reloaded with its Thursday launch.

No connection, except for really good competition! Indy IV is slated for a May release, while Bond 22 will premiere on November the same year. Once again, EON must exceed every expectaction and try to surpass the Indiana Jones film in terms of quality and thrills. Another Herculean task.

Until I saw the response (above), I thought maybe it was tied to the threads here of late regarding Sir Connery's return to his role as Indy's father (and contradicting his claim of having retired from films).

Otherwise, I dunno about what it means in terms of competition. Somewhere I recall reading that Mission Impossible III portended a sort of insurmountable standard for Casino Royale, and, in hindsight, I don't think it would have made a difference even if Casino Royale had delivered "just" a "typical" James Bond 007 film.

That said, thanks, HelllsHere, for the release date information. I may just have to see two theatrical releases next year!

How so? They will be two very different films relased six months apart. The link is tenuous, to say the least.

A Herculean task, indeed. They'll need to begin by accounting for the near-twemty-year passage in time. ("Dad, where have you been!" "Son, is that you!") But this one's a project that's dear to all hearts and no doubt they've given that long and hard thought. It'd be especially nice to see Harrison back in his old glory form.

I'll believe it when I see it. Or more to the point, I will continue not believing in it while I continue not seeing it.

If you assume the Indy film will be any good. I'd be more enthused about it if George Lucas had been cut out of the project altogether, but as it stands, the man who gave us Jar Jar Binks is going to have a major influence on this film.
I don't really see that EON has to compete with it at all...no, Indy has to surpass its competition, which would be the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

While delays seem to be the first word that comes to mind when describing this film, I'll still be very intersted in seeing it when it comes out.

With many months seperating the two films, I doubt there will be much in terms of competition. Perhaps more comparison.

I personally couldn't care less how it does at the box office. There won't be a fifth one, so as cinema-goers let's not worry ourselves with the profit margins. I'm a guaranteed punter for Indy4 because I love the first three. 2008 is shaping up to be a good year for releases.

It seems like Shia LaBeouf has been cast as Indiana Jones' son:

What little faith I had in this film has died.

Not that Ford & Connery have a strong resemblance - but this guy doesn't look anything like either of them.

Yes, my hopes for this film just got taken down a peg too - I have a sneaky suspicion it will be about "being a good dad since mine was never around" or something equally warm and fuzzy.

I hate this movie trend of heroes having kids. It was bad enough with THE MUMMY RETURNS and SUPERMAN RETURNS. But now Indiana Jones? What is with that?

I'm just waiting for a future James Bond movie to see 007 teaming up with his son or daughter. :cooltongue:

Contradictory statements:

Shia LaBeouf is in final talks to star in Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones 4" as the son of the adventuresome archaeologist to be played once again by Harrison Ford.

...

Neither Par nor Lucasfilm would confirm that talks are under way with LaBeouf.

And no source to boot? I'll believe it when I see him in the previews. Otherwise, I see it as nothing more than the typical Hollywood rumor-mill. Remember how many people were reported to be the next Bond, or Bond girl? Then again, how many of us heard the initial rumors about Craig and thought: "No way!" But I think the odds are in our favor.

Didn't "Phantom Menace" teach anyone that people may like kids, but not so much in adventure movies. Including kids!

*sigh*

Plot point I: Indy discovers he has a son who is oh-so-feisty and insists on traveling with dad on his latest exploit.

Yadda, yadda

Act III: Indy sacrifices object of search to save son – the real prize is their relationship.

Someone not very familiar with Hollywood/film news may not know, but VARIETY is far above "typical rumor mill." They may report things without official sources, but their sources are always very good indeed. If they report it, you can safely bet that they have it right.

Quite. I'm finding it morbidly suiting that the announcement was posted to the forums by a member who call himself "Hell is here".

Next he'll tell us Jinx and Christmas Jones are back in Bond 22 to do a lesbian love scene scripted by Purvis and Wade without any help from anybody else.

(Not poking fun at our CBn mate, here. Just the message.)

Point taken. I really have very little interest in Hollywood/film news beyond what's coming out and when. I was not aware of Variety's credentials.

I looked up this guy and realised who this LaBeouf is. I assumed Indie's son would be 10 or 12 or something but it turns out he's about six months older than me. I'm not sure whether having an "adult" Indie Jr. will be better or worse than a really young Jones, but I do recall reading an interview with him about "Transformers" last year, and he is a complete prat. Don't know what this says about his acting abilities, but...

Supposedly, Cate Blanchett has joined the cast. Spells quality, no? Even though I think she's a bit overrated, and positively wooden in BABEL.

This might just about be enough to kill any anticipation I used to have for this movie.

This reeks and stinks to high heavens.

Another Jones jr....
