Fine.

I seem to remember this all getting a leedle ugly last time around (albeit initially well-intentioned) with a number of experts wading in (and ultimately displaying nothing more than inexpertise). Not to put such people off making themselves fair game for lampoonery but please could we keep it civil, this time, this obsession with money none of us is actually ever going to see? Nobody is right and nobody is wrong.

It's going to make my

I'm by no means an expert, but it's always fun to speculate. But like you said Jim, I hope things are a little more civil than they were the last time around.

I'm guessing that due to the popularity and good word of mouth that CR had, Bond 22 will be even bigger box office than CR (however Harry Potter opeing 2 weeks later could impact the legs that CR had). I do predict a much bigger opening weekend for QoS however.

I can see QOS taking a lot on it's opening weekend and if it truly is a great film then like CR word of mouth will spread and the film will continue to do big business. My predictions would be:

US: $180 - 200 million
INTERNATIONAL: $450 - 480 million
WORLDWIDE TOTAL:$630 - 680 million

Stateside, it'll take just slightly under $200 million - $190 million, say, which Box Office Mojo informs me is a bit more than THE SIMPSONS MOVIE and a bit less than ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS (whatever that is).

I base this on THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM's haul of $227 million - QUANTUM OF SOLACE won't do Bourne-style business in America, but it won't be too far off.

Internationally, it'll be a huge hit. Can't be bothered to think up any numbers, but it'll be massive, probably one of the top five grossers (it may be bested by THE DARK KNIGHT, HARRY POTTER AND WHATEVER IT IS THIS TIME and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, all of which should outgross it in the States; don't know what other blockbusters are out this year).

In the United Kingdom, it'll make every other film look like a complete joke at the box office.

Stepping up to Loomis' international betting window, I'll take Bond over Indy.

I know nothing about the Potter film, but unless it's the 'last one' in which all the hubbub about Harry's past is revealed, I'll give Bond the nod to Lord of the Daycare as well.

Bond will certainly best TDK internationally, but Indy and especailly Harry Potter I'm not so sure of (HP is HUGE in UK, just like Bond).

It will have a bigger opening weekend than Casino Royale in the US, and will also make more money there - but not hugely (say US$185-190 million).

Internationally it will also beat Casino Royale - but again not by anything extravagant, say $500 million.

Overall I'd guesss it will make just under US$700 million.

Note: These are guesses and are in no way subject to any debate whatsoever, including the effect increasing fuel prices in China will have on the opening weekend in Cleveland.

I was going to do a thread on this comparing inflation rates, relative wealth level increases in the BRICs economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China), and US Dollar exchange rate movements to project "Bond 22's" Box office.

If you recall, as "ray t" back in october 2002, I predicted DAD to go above $400 million right on these very forums...when all the experts were throwing out $350 Mil numbers.

I also, on these forums (as either "Scorpion" or "Sensualist" - I forget which one), predicted Casino Royale would do $550 mil when the nay-sayers (like Gravity's Shilouette and those at craignotbond) were saying it would be lucky to get to $300M because Craig was ugly, that Brosnan made Bond popular again, and that Brosnan fans wouldn't show up to see CR.

Well...I'll be the first to say that Quantum Of Solace will gross $740 million world-wide and that the US portion (net of Canada) will fall to only 19 percent of world-wide...i.e. an all-time low for the series.

I'll predict it will do better than Casino Royale commercially, but not quite as well critically. I think it will atill garner a strong 70-80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but somehow I think critics will be a little less kind to it than Casino Royale.

The fact that Casino Royale was a word of mouth hit that noone was really expecting to do well makes me think Quantum of Solace will have a far bigger opening weekend, and the hype will be huge. Think Dead Man's Chest compared to Curse of the Black Pearl. Compared to the other big blockbusters, I beleive Quantum of Solace will definitely be up there with The Dark Knight, Indy 4 and Half-Blood Prince. Whether it will beat them or not, I honestly don't know, but I reckon it could be in with a chance.

I'm going to predict that it will be higher than Casino Royale, both on opening weekend, and overall. With the success of Casino Royale, it seems people are more eager to see where the story goes from there. Plus word of mouth, and a slightly controversial title (I mean that in the sense that many will want to see the film just to find out what the title really means) will also help the film to catch more attention than Casino Royale.

I think we can except the overall box office to be at least $600 million.

I think it's far too early to get an accurate gauge of what this film was earn but I'll take a stab.

Domestically I think it will outgross by CASINO ROYALE but not by much. I'll give it $190 million.

Internationally I see QUANTUM OF SOLACE being just as, if not slightly more, successful as CASINO ROYALE. With a new Harry Potter film being released shortly after, I don't think QUANTUM will do as well in the UK as CASINO did. I'll say that QUANTUM will get $450 million internationally.

I'd propose approximately $640 million worldwide for QUANTUM OF SOLACE. I think at the absolute minimum it will be around $600 million and at the highest pushing $700 million.

Now that you know the plot of Quantum of Solace, you have seen a couple of scenes and you fancied the previous film of Daniel Craig as James Bond, do you think that Bond 22 will be a bigger box-office hit than Casino Royale?

Box office figures are always open to interpretation. But my gut feeling is that QoS is going to strike gold. I believe that Craig's Bond has captured the prevailing international mood in the way Connery's Bond did four decades ago. There is an appetite to see Craig as Bond again and you can feel it from the way the press are lapping up every new story about the new film.

Brosnan was very popular, even if it suits some people on here to ignore that fact. But much of the press coverage prior to the release of GoldenEye was that it was pointless trying to breath new life into a dead franchise. When both film and actor proved a hit with the public, there was certainly renewed interest. And whatever fans thought of him, Brosnan's popularity never really waned, so there was always a degree of anticipation. But, to my mind, only two Bonds have captured the zeitgeist: Connery and Craig. And that makes all the difference.

I totally agree with you. People wanted the Connery type of character. They were waiting for so long until Craig appeared.
I think QoS will be a big hit.

It will easily be a bigger hit because Foster stated that the film is going to be 2 hours. Which means: more showings than CR.

I'm guessing that most of your information on Quantum of Solace is coming off of the internet. Back in 1995, the internet was a bit of a different experience. Today, seeing full motion videos, endless photos, & reports from countless websites is the norm. Back then, there was buzz but it was mostly in newsgroups & bulletin boards & definitely more confined to fans. TV coverage was similar but, as dee-bee-five mentions, it was more about the franchise being dead since the cold war was over.

On the film being more of a financial success (i.e. bigger box office gross) than Casino Royale, I'm guessing it will be. There is definitely a good vibe rolling into this one. Being a direct sequel, will help with pulling in the casual fans again.

No. While I agree with dee-bee-five that "Brosnan was very popular, even if it suits some people on here to ignore that fact", I agree with him even more when he says that "Craig's Bond has captured the prevailing international mood in the way Connery's Bond did four decades ago".

The Brosnan films were certainly anticipated by the world outside 007 fandom (insofar as magazines like Empire and sites like AICN would carry news stories about them during their making), but no one really expected them to be especially incredible films (not even us fans; I mean, we enjoyed them for what they were, and they fuelled the flames of our fandom, but that was pretty much about it - of course, I don't speak for the particularly Brozpassionate wing of Bond fandom, for whom something like THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH may indeed have been CITIZEN KANE*) - they were really just seen as part of the scenery. A welcome part of the scenery, but a part of the scenery nonetheless. "Oh, look, it's another two years on and here comes another Bond film", kinda thing.

Nowadays, though, the level of interest seems much higher, and people's expectations have been raised considerably by CASINO ROYALE. Judging by the coverage, it appears that QUANTUM OF SOLACE is being considered as a major project and potentially one of the best films of 2008 (putting it in the same league as THE DARK KNIGHT and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL), and not "just another Bond movie".

And, yes, having seen the new pics and read the new reports, I believe that QoS will outgross CR, and not just internationally but also Stateside.

*To put it another way, I greatly looked forward to and devoured news reports about all of the Brosnan films, but never expected any of them to be among the best films of its year, whereas I'll be surprised if QoS isn't one of the best films of this year.
