Sorry if this has been posted before but its news to me. According to http://news.bbc.co.u...ent/7208410.stm Tanner returns, as played by Rory Kinnear.

Good pick up, I didn't catch that tibit. Interesting.

Also, "Here's a detail for Bond gadget obsessives: when M wants privacy she can touch a button and the glass wall that separates their offices frosts over. Not as impressive as an invisible car - nor as ridiculous."

Interesting. So the curved staircase was in MI6 headquarters. I like the sound of the sets (plus the previous reference to a bit of the Ken Adams touch). Can't say one way or the other about the Tanner character... the've never really done anything interesting with him. He's meant to be quite friendly with Bond (but I didn't get that feeling in any of the Brosnan films).

Yeah- just the way they had Bond call him 'Tanner' rather than 'Bill' (as he did in the books) made that a bit off.

I'm all for a new Tanner, though. It'd be rather nice to see Bond actually be friendly with someone.

Will we see them playing golf or having lunch together? Ah, the excitement of a 'rebooted' Bond!

Cool, my first thread to get linked from the news section

This is great news. Im glad that neither Q or Moneypenny are returning, but with their absense its good to have some of the other smaller roles filled with familiar characters.

Im intrigued my M's office...

I think there is a lot more of interest in that report than the bit about Tanner being played by Rory Kinnear.

Excellent news. As I've said before the reboot and Craig's take on 007 gives us the chance to see his friendship with Bill Tanner grow.

Also glad to see no Q or Moneypenny. Re-reading some of Fleming's novels (Dr No at the moment) reminds how unimportant they were in the books. Tanner is far more used.

That's cool that they are brining Tanner back. I always thought he was underused in the first films. I guess he is Villiers replacement. I wonder if maybe they will kinda roll Q and Moneypenny into this new Tanner? The article says he is M's assistant, so maybe in addition to that he'll give Bond some gadgets?

Ah, so this is why Villers isn't returning. I really like the idea of having Tanner back (although I wouldn't have minded it Villers returned), and hopefully his character is developed throughout further films.

Looking forward to what he looks like next to Craig, and, of course, if he is playing the character - and the relationship with Bond - as written by Fleming. Or whether its a case of EON having simply nicked a Fleming name, as per the previous 'incarnations' of Tanner, without any intention of using the character as written.

right, nicely observed!

I suspect he'll just be another name... I doubt they'll want to add yet another relationship to the film, which seems like it'll have enough as is...

Perhaps worthy of note is the fact that Rory Kinnear's godfather was Michael Williams (late husband of Judi Dench).

Welcome back, Bill Tanner.

I think it's nice to see a Fleming character back, and hopefully not in name only (but I'm not getting my hopes up). I'm in the same camp as Judo about Felix. That's the relationship that I want to see develop, far more than any other (although, I'd like to see Mathis live out the film as a friend to Bond, if only because of the literary legacy of the character). If that set pic is any indicator, Tanner does indeed look like the ear into which M will be likely to vent about Bond's rebellious ways. And I do hope that's not the case. No big deal either way, I don't suppose, though.

Oh really? That's rather nice.

Thing is; if Quantum is an hour after Casino, where has Villiers gone? Just nipped to the loo for a bit? And how come M's had her office refurbished in an hour flat?

Is it just the beginning of the film that follows on directly? Perhaps the rest is set a little while later.

Tanner or no Tanner doesn't really matter much to me, frankly. Although, if well done he could be a new recurring character - like MP and Q were.

Wasn't Kinnear one of the so-called final four to play Bond last time round? He was at least rumoured to have auditioned. But perhaps they just auditioned him for Villiers and liked him, but saved him to use later.

I like the idea of bringing Tanner back, but I hope it's not just a renaming of the lame Villiers character. Tanner should be Chief of Staff not M's secretary/assistant...

Fantastic news! Although he isn't quite how I pictured Tanner, I'll wait and see how he performs but I'm sure he'll do a great job - something I think the world learned after Craig was cast.
