I was chuckling to myself about the people who claimed Craig could not be bond due to his blond hair, and at that moment I wondered if similar controversy was created over the casting of Roger Moore as his hair isn't black? I wasn't even an itch in my fathers pants in the year 1973 (pardon the expression) so I'm asking the wise members of this finely run site to enlighten me.

We had a whole lot less media talk in those days, but in the central US the subject never came up.

Never came up at all? That's actually quite interesting. How times have changed....

I don't know precise details about Moore taking over the mantle of Bond and the public reaction at the time, but I would say that a great deal of the anti-Craig movement was publicised across the internet - clearly a facility that would not have been available to critics during the 1970s. I don't think that this should be underestimated.

Yes. The internet gives a very tiny minority a bigger voice than otherwise and this is amplified by media who play off any controversy and feed it to the masses who eat such things up in the absense of anything of significance in their lives.

Back to Moore...he was regarded as a reasonably popular choice given his role as a Saint and a Persuader but was obliged to get a haircut because of his flowing locks.

:D

This plays out perfectly in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back with the Movie Poop Shoot website. I can hear Jay dictating his response to a bulletin board post in Mooby's restaurant now. :P

Besides, Roger Moore was more or less Pierce Brosnan some 22 years before; he was the Anointed One, Lazenby or not. :D

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but sometimes . . . Kevin Smith can be a wise man.

That's an interesting point and I never really thought about that before but Moore was destined for Bond like Pierce and had been talked about in the role quite a bit before he was cast.

Lazenby was his Dalton, quite a parallel between Pierce and Rog considering they are the epitome of the OTT it's gone too far ethic.

They are also my least liked Bonds, although I still do enjoy a good RM Bond unlike Brozzer's poor man's Moore efforts

Even though GL & TD had a lost less success in the role both had a much better selection of entries and ones which have stood the test of time much better.

It looks like Craig is finally bucking the trend by bringing back the more Fleming model but most likely not to be short lived like GL & TD.

I guess i did overlook the whole Roger Moore destiny thing, and I am pulling for Mr. Craig (obviously). Before Casino Royale came out I decided to wait and watch the film before i passed judgment (unlike many others), and I was pleasantly surprised. Great film, and I'm pulling for the next several to be of the same quality or better.

The lack of gadgets was also a nice touch, although I wouldn't be opposed to a jetpack scene here or there in bond 22, but that's just me...

Many people simply stopped watching the Bond movies when Moore took over, saying there was only one Bond - Connery. Many of those people have not seen any since DAF, or maybe only caught bits on TV.

However, Moore also had his own fans and also gathered new Bond fans of his own. Most cinema-goers are not aware of the history of Bond. I remember at the premiere of Die Another Day, a BBC reporter had no idea who George Lazenby was, commenting "and a white haired guy who apparently was Bond too, once".

Sadly a reflection of the current standard of journalism at the BBC as much as anything else.

True.

But there are plenty of people here in Australia who had no idea that there was once an Aussie Bond.

Oddly more of my friends remember Lazenby than Dalton. Probably because Lazenby has gained a bit of a reputation as a trivia fact - "Which actor portrayed James Bond only once in the official movies?"*

*apart from Daniel Craig up to this point...

Yeah, I'm afraid Laz and Dalton will always be the forgotten Bonds. Personally I'd rather have had more films with them. Perhaps at the expense of Brosnan... but if he'd only made one I'd probably be saying the same about him!

As I recall, the only controversy about Rog’s hair came later in his reign as his hair lightened to that reddish colour.

My wife ask me the same thing last night when we looked TSWLM!
In fact I think the popularity of Moore overshadowed this "detail".

The whole blond Bond thing was just pure tabloid "journalism". It made for a catchy headline and highlighted that Craig wasn't exactly an obvious choice. It really seemed like they all conveniently forgot that Roger has never really been dark haired.

After Connery, public reaction to Moore was along the lines of "Finally, an Actor with hair to play Bond!". Media was so happy that Moore had hair that they looked past the fact that it was blonde. Craig on the other hand is following Dalton and Brosnan, both with lots of dark hair. Brosnan's is jet black and more groomed than most poodles, so therefore the blonde subject came up with Craig.

Daniel Craig seems less and less controversial by the day - this month's Marie Claire claims he 'saved the Bond franchise' and this month's GQ is 'Men of the Year' edition, and Daniel is one of three different covers (the others being Bill Clinton and Kanye West.)
