Here's a scoop on the US release (simultaneous with the UK -- paperback in '09) and the first DMC location; Paris!

First DMC location revealed: Paris

:cooltongue:

Splendid! Great find, Zen!

I'm especially excited that the book will be released in the US at the same time as the UK. That's a first.

Not familiar with the author, but the title is awesome.

When I first saw the news headline I didn't read the last half where it says that it's the name of the novel and immediately thought they had given Bond 22 a title.

If EON picks up the film rights, then perhaps we may one day see a Bond film with this great title. :cooltongue:

I think this is fantastic news. I first read about it in 'The Sun' and just wasn't to sure how much of this to belive.

I thought that IFP wasn't going to announce the title and author more near the time.

Can't say I have ever heard of Sebastian Faulks. But if it is '80% Fleming' then it sounds promising. To have it set were Fleming had took off I think is good.

So I take it that it is between TLD and CS then. Hope Sebastian writes more books then.

More between TMWTGG and CS...I don't think we know exactly when TLD takes place, do we?

You know, at the end of Secret Servant it's said Bond goes off on a mission to Casablanca -- his first mission after TMWTGG. Could this be a clue to another location?

It's set in 1967 which, according to this link, places DMC after Colonel Sun. That's assuming they're acknowledging Colonel Sun's existence.

Also, by 1967 James Bond will have turned 45 and reached the mandatory retirement age for the double 0 section. Will that form part of the plot?

Hey, cool website. I like how it breaks COLD into its two "books" and places them accordingly in the timeline. Clever.

But where's Young Bond?

Best timeline I could find on google in a hurry. I'm sure there are better ones out there. Saying that, whilst the fella's obviously having a bit of fun, the dates he has for Bond's birth and the events in the Fleming books make sense.

Just saw IFP's Corinne Turner interviewed on Sky News about this, fielding nonsensical questions along the lines of "Did Faulkes adopt Ian Fleming's style, or was that a style he decided to use anyway?". Apparently, the author's surname is pronounced "folks" (as in "Any of you folks seen....?"), which I didn't know - assumed it was pronounced like "Do you eat Chinese food with chopsticks or forks?".

"Faux" would have been more appropriate. :cooltongue:

Anyway, take away the beard and the curls, and he looks quite a bit like Fleming, don'tcha think?

Faulks calls it "light-hearted"...Doubleday prexy calls it "madcap" and a "romantic romp". Yes, these words trouble me too. But I'm not going to panic. We'll wait and see. What might feel light-hearted to Faulks could still be pretty weighty stuff.

Maybe not a big thing, but Variety says the book is set in 1968 (not '67 like other reports).

Yes... considerably.

Are you sure you're not going to be at DTBB2? I was going to bring my James Bond in the 21st Century to be autographed.

I'd dismiss most of it. Maybe one of them is .. but yeah.. some of what has been said already just comes off as good ol-fashion PR hyperbole as if to cover all the bases. The Barbara Broccoli "sortaquote" was a little overkill IMO, but there you go. :cooltongue:

Great news!

While the title isn't the most inventive, atleast it isn't a rip off of the previous titles.

"I found writing this light-hearted book more thrilling than I had expected."

I wonder what he's referring to when he says light-hearted - tone, story? This is a word I'm not a particular fan of. Maybe he just means no swear words or descriptive sex which I haven't the slightest problem with. I suppose a fair few of Fleming's books are considered light hearted. Several of the words he has used bother me a little. Maybe he's just wants to be casual about the whole thing. It's not like James Bond is heavy literature.

They also say the book is set over several cities. I hope there isn't too much globe trotting. That's more in line with the films.

"Devil May Care is set in 1967 when

But isn't Bond meant to be fairly lighthearted / rompy stuff anyway?

Poisoned knitting needles
Giant squid
Death by mudbath
Hypnotising a load of dimwit dolly birds into poisoning UK livestock... whilst up an Alp.
Psycopathic Korean manservants

Frankly, "romantic romp" and "lighthearted" seem to be bang on the money.

I've no problem with that description either. Lighthearted as compared to the gut-wrenching gigantic human-meat-mincing-machine of the WWI trenches Faulks dealt with in 'Birdsong'.

Sorry, Jim, most of that's from today's newsheadlines:

Umberella's with poisoned tips or plutonium used for assassignation
Planes crashing into tall builds
Psycopathic religious fanatics being "hypnotised" into committing suicide at secret mountainous training camps....

Can't find a parrallel for giant squid, though.

Bond perhaps doesn't seem so madcap and lighthearted after all?
