I noticed on the YOLT UE in some of the special features Connery has a bald spot on the back of his head. This makes me kind of sad. If he did where a toupee which movie did he start wearing one?

It is pretty well known that COnnery wore a rug in all his Bond adventures.

That's one hell of a rug he had on aint it? Lasting all those Underwater scenes in TB, the orient express fight on FRWL.

Did he ever do any press for Bond without the rug on?

I knew he always wore a hair piece of some kind in all the Bond films he did, but when I was watching Premeire Bond on the Dr. No DVD they showed him at the Premeire of You Only Live Twice and he had a complete bald spot, his hair was kinda long and he had a mustache. I was like wow what a difference. It was kinda strange, but that's Sean Connery the REAL Sean Connery being himself.

I'm pretty certain he didn't wear a wig in the first two films, or when he did the underwater stuff later on.

The version I heard was that Hitchcock had made him wear a hair piece for Marnie. Then when he showed up for work on Goldfinger, Cubby Broccoli felt he should continue wearing one as Bond.

Just a receding hairline when he filmed Goldfinger (although I'm at that time of life when I feel there's nothing ''just'' about a receding hairline :cooltongue: ). The bald spot developed a little later.

That's my understanding of it.

I was under the impression (and I admit right now that this isn't an area I really give a [censored] about :cooltongue:) that the early ones he didn't wear one (DN, FRWL, and GF). Regardless, for me, it only became noticeable in TB, YOLT, and DAF where his appearance was dramatically different than the first three films. GF is questionable, maybe, but I don't really notice if he did.

He had hair appliances for all his Bond films.

They were smaller in the beginning and became larger as he lost more hair.

There were different types as well - close up/love scene ones and action scene ones.

If you look at premiere and pre-filming photos on all of his Bond films - it's pretty obvious his hair does not look like it does in the films.

And to answer the other question - he did show up without a toupee to the YOLT pre-film press conference. That combined with the fact that he said he did not find Japanese women sexy (because they covered up in Kimonos) really got things off on the wrong foot.

I'm willing to be swayed on the issue. :cooltongue:

But that little notch he had in the front of his hair in real life, can still be seen in the early films.

It seems far more likely to me that, at that time, they would have just bunged a bit of theatrical 'boot polish' on his head, to cover up any thin spots.

I've heard that Connery started thinning in his early 20s.

Cubby Broccoli told one potential Bond candidate that Connery wore a hair piece in all his Bond films (and used ice packs later in his career to help hide the paunch).

Did Connery wear a toupee in every single scene? I doubt it.

But certain scenes for every Bond film did require one.

I've confirmed this info with John Cork - producer of the DVDs & author of various Bond books. Not that Cork saying it makes it automatically true - but he's talked to more people involved with the films than anyone else alive - and he has told me that Connery wore a piece in every Bond film.

I believe that was Michael Gambon who was asked to audition for.. I think OHMSS. Maybe you already knew that.

RedKelly,

Please forgive me for being a smart-[censored] but when I read the question you used to title the new topic, some similar questions popped into my head:

"Is the Pope Catholic?"
"Does a bear [censored] in the woods?"

Connery did indeed start thinning in his early 20s and had to wear one for his Bond films. It was just for the frontal area, at least for the early Bonds i'm sure of.

He has a very bushy beard and chest. Perhaps he just trimmed them on to paper and stuck handfuls on with superglue. I don't know if that counts as a toupee.

You are correct. He did not start wearing a toupe until Goldfinger.
The first two films are the real thing.

If you look at it closely you will agree with me.

In the "Inside From Russia With Love" documentary, there's an anecdote about how a helicopter with Terence Young, Michael White (assistant art director) and someone else rose and fell into the sea during filming. The camera shows a newspaper page of a picture of Young with Sean Connery looking on. Sir Sean isn't wearing his toupee. While he still has hair on the top of his head, it's pretty thin.

That was taken in 1963. Here's one from 1966 where Sean is doing a comb over:

Also, re: hairpieces.

John Wayne wore them. James Stewart wore them. So I have no problem with the fact that Sean Connery wore them early and often.

Just don't tell me Burt Reynolds or William Shanter ever wore one. My world would collapse.

Sorry to correct you but, as has been stated already, he wore small pieces up front for Dr.No & FRWL.
