Why don't you buy the DVD, keep it shrinkwrapped on the shelf, until the time to revisit comes then ??? I'm puzzled... Do you throw your DVDs away after multiple viewings, then rebuy when you want to watch the movie again ?

Hello Stamper and merry Christmas for the 7th!

No i don't throw them out, i just want to wait until a better extended CR edition comes out with deleted scenes.

I think, sadly, that we'll never see the DVD of CR that we'd all want.

The first release of DAD wasn't bad at all, but really only followed what GE, TND and TWINE had done - make use of the Electronic Press Kit and TV material. The Script to Screen doc is a remarkable piece of work, at least in as much as it got much closer to revealing the production than ever before, but it was still made first and foremost for television.

Which is to say, it was cleared for DVD, rather than made for it. Which is a short-cut to bonus material that the post-'95 Bond film discs have always taken.

Now, I'm not against this at all. I'm one of those people who wants trailers and promo materials. Because the film gets extra context from seeing how they were positioned. EPK-based TV-docs do the same thing; they show you how the film was marketed.

What they don't do, usually, is get to the heart of the film's production. They're 'Making Of's in name only. Script to Screen is a wonderful, rare exception. (Rare for 007, anyway; more commonplace on other movies nowadays.) But there was no such documentary on TV for CR, and I suspect this means there won't be one on the DVD.

This early leak backs that up. With an approximate maximum of 3.5 hours of material on a DVD, we're already seeing a lot of space taken up with the various TV docs (and Bond Girls Are Forever? Nice to have it, but it was already used on two separate DVD giveaway promos, takes a lot of disc space, and doesn't even relate to CR itself).

Moreover, Bond's deleted scenes track-record has been very disappointing. I can appreciate that the footage has been lost from most of the early films, but the Brosnans have no such trouble, and what do we get? The conspicuous absence of all the cut Stamper material from TND, no sign of the 'certificate to die' lines from GE (okay, that's a bit petty, but still...) and NOTHING from DAD.

Plus, as has been said, it's worth remembering that the early movies only went the extra mile for deleted scenes when the Ultimate Editions came out. Which is to say - anything that might make us double-dip.

(I did, in the end, but only when they went down to Buy One Get One Free. The extras added were simply too, too minor to impress. Such a shame. While I have issues with the transfers - Lowry, lest we forget, are the guys who 'cleaned up' Star Wars by making Vader's lightsaber pink and mis-timing Kenobi's saber from blue to green in one scene of Episode IV!- but the removal of dirt and scratches and SOME of the colour work really does bring the old films to life again.)

Sad to say - and I hope to be proved very, very wrong - I think this early leak is the start of a grab-all collection of material based on stuff that can be cleared, rather than especially comissioned.

Deleted scenes are possible, but like Superman Returns expect them to be incomplete, saving the good stuff for a double-dip down the line. (SR has done this with the Krypton sequence, fact fans. The sequence was filmed, the FX completed...but it's being held back for a second DVD.)

Screen tests are a problem. The 'rejected' auditionees will certainly not be seen - not for 20 years or so anyway. It simply isn't done, and clearances are a HUGE issue. Craig's might appear, I guess... except the way it was avoided in the Becoming Bond edit makes me suspect hat it's staying in the vault.

Commentary is almost certain, thankfully - Campbell and Meheux are a great commentary double-act - but an actors' one may be best avoided after DAD's attempt. But as for insightful docs, lost material, screen tests and special edits...well, I suspect it'll be never for most, and double-dip for some.

Shame.

Screen tests are a total fantasy, we will never get them. Do people think we will get a commentary? I was thinking we wouldn't, but one from Campbell would be great.

I think "Making Of" documentaries and interviews are cool, but I am not a huge fan of commentaries - kinda takes away the magic a little.

So, I don't care really, as long as it's got the movie on there...:cooltongue:

I would hope to see one between Campbell and Wilson (the one they did together on the GoldenEye DVD is one of the best in my opinion). I'd like to see at least two to three commentaries on the Casino Royale DVD in total.

More is welcome though. :cooltongue:

I agree with you on the Campbell / Wilson commentary for GoldenEye. That one was actually pretty good. Better than the other Brosnan films, IMHO.

I want one with Craig, Mads, and Eva too, but if it turns out like Brosnan's for DAD then I'd rather not. That is seriously one of the most boring commentaries. Ever.

My favourite DVD commentaries are the ones done by the English comedian Ross Noble. Not only does he do a commentary of his show, but he also does another commentary on his commentary (with the original soundtrack taken off). It's hilarious!

I'd like to see the Bond actors do that.

I don't know where you guys are getting this from. Stamper did appear in one of the TND deleted scenes, in which he kills an incompetent guard onboard the stealth boat.

I wonder if there will be deleted scenes. That's what I want the most - there was some good material left on the cutting room floor.

Harmsway, care to expand on what exactly was the good material left on the cutting room floor?

It's been touched upon elsewhere, but off the top of my head:

-Much was cut out of the pre-title sequence.
-More of Valenka swimming in the ocean.
-An element of the "ellipsis" plotline involving torn playing cards.
-A slightly extended version of the Bond/M interchange in the Bahamas.
-Bond and Vesper driving to meet Mathis.
-Extended dialogue with Mathis and Bond during lunch (may or may not have been filmed).
-Bond being rushed to the hospital.
-The Bond/Vesper skinny-dipping scene.
-A scene with Bond and Vesper where she takes photos of him while they're together.
-An alternate version of the "bitch is dead" scene, with Bond looking at the photos of him and Vesper on the laptop, and then flinging the laptop into the water.

There are probably more that I'm not remembering.

Here in Norway, the distributor of Sony movies, Universal, has sent out the Norwegian DVD-cover of CR. It's almost identical with the Swedish, BUT look at the special features listing (Norwegian: Bonusmateriale); there are not much to talk about... I don't think we can expect more s. features than what has been confirmed. "5 News Wraps" and "Death In Venice: A look at Casino Royale’s thrilling finale" aren't even mentioned. No DTS either... but they have made room for three 5.1. tracks in three diffirent languages; English, Spanish and Catalonian (!).

I have to say it: the DVD of CR is a disappointment (at least here in Norway)...

Click here to see the Norwegian DVD-cover of CR (you will see the cover a bit further in the artcile, where you should click on the image to get a larger version).

Do we know that the GE line was cut at the script stage? I'm sure I remember a set report mentioning the line. (Though I'm happy to believe I'm mistaken.) I'm pretty certain that Stamper's stuff made it trhough, though - it's in the making-of book, which got written during production, as they filmed, but before the edit.

It's also interesting to note his different eye colours, something that was meant to be indicative of his condition. It's in the stills and, I think, the movie - but the film gives him very few close-ups, as if they've gone back to the coverage that was shot to avoid showing this too obviously once the decision was taken to drop it.

And yes, DAD had loads of scenes dropped - absolutely. Their absence on the DVD editions is conspicuous, but sadly not untypical.

It's not just being held back for a second DVD - Singer has said the $12 million Krypton sequence will be reinstated for an IMAX re-release of SUPERMAN RETURNS, likely in the build-up to SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL (due in 2009).

Well, it depends which interview you read (Total Film quoted him as holding it for a later DVD). But the sequence was completed and available for the current DVD. They chose not to include it on the DVD so it could be shown later. If that's an IMAX version, okay, but that version will certainly turn up on DVD as well. It's double-dipping, it's deliberate, and it's all about getting people to pay twice over.

I don't deny it's part of the business, or that the franchise could use the money (Returns didn't do the box-office business to make its production and publicity budget back; hopefully the DVDs and IMAX release will solve that); and I certainly don't argue that fans are 'entitled' to anything'. But...well, double-dipping is not the most fan-friendly thing in the world. Or on Krypton. :-)
