Now on the CBn main page...

Contrary to rumours, 'OHMSS' theme not featured in score

In the new issues of Hotdog (UK film mag.) David Arnold reveals his top 5 film scores. OHMSS is top of the list, but the cool thing is he sasy that the OHMSS title theme is the basis for the theme for the new James Bond.

How cool is that!

So basically, the OHMSS theme will be used as a sort of 'template' for the CR score.

I think this is actually a good idea. Arnold would be able to keep the score very 'bondian' while not actually using the James Bond theme until the end.

Interesting, although if he means that the OHMSS theme will be basically reworked as the new James Bond Theme (tarted up with some dance beats, as with the Arnold/Propellerheads version), then I think that's a naff idea. Plus, I like The James Bond Theme, dang it! :)

ETA:

Arnold would be able to keep the score very 'bondian' while not actually using the James Bond theme until the end.

Ah. Hadn't thought of that. Oh, well, in that case, carry on. Besides, getting as much Barry into the score as possible can only be a good thing. :P

OHMSS woven throughout the score? Nice. It's a great theme and I've always wanted to hear it again.

I just hope that it's not too Arnold-fied. I know he said this score will take a "new direction" - so I hope that direction means a more classic, orchestral score.

Very fitting, especially considering the strong link between Casino Royale and OHMSS.

Wait! So this means that the opening gunbarrel (which, for the purposes of needling doublenoughtspy, I'll remind people is set in a "bathroom" :) ) will not be accompanied by The James Bond Theme!

Sweet Mother of Pearl. :P

Well, what I think will happen is that while the James Bond theme will not be used in full until the end of the film, various elements of it will be used (for example, a few motifs taken from the theme/a few chords), building up throughout the film until it's climax. Mix that with the OHMSS theme, and Chris Cornell's title music, and this could be the greatest Bond score for a long, long time.

Actually, not necessarily. I'm not sure that's the case. All we know specifically is the familiar guitar twang won't be heard until the end.

Elements of the theme may be spread throughout the score - a hint here, a hint there - all building up to a bigger declaration. Thus, the gunbarrel may very well get a big "dun-dun BUM, dun-dun BUM!"

After all, we know the gunbarrel is very different. Look at the teaser trailer - that's the gunbarrel. It's shorter, without the dots or the walk across the screen. Thus the accompanying music must be somewhat different from what we've gotten anyhow. Furthermore, since the gunbarrel opens into the main titles, the score would also have to fit too.

I tend to think we'll get some Bond-theme music that leads into Cornell's title song, the way we had an intro to the FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE main titles.

Excuse me, but this is just speculation. Arnold never said that Bond theme will only be used at the end of the movie. I'm quite sure that it is another rumour.

I wonder whether Arnold means that the OHMSS theme will be used in a way that only musicologists would be aware of, i.e. borrowing the structure or something, or whether it'll be, y'know, actually used, a la the use of Williams' music in SUPERMAN RETURNS.

I'd find it hard to believe that Arnold wouldn't prefer to write his own "new James Bond theme". Where's the kudos in just rehashing the one for OHMSS?

Well, he has reworked it once before for an album, of course, and it was magnificent.

That's the main point. If they want to use it as a template, fine - it's a great theme and it's always good to have some Barry influence.
But if Arnold uses his techno stuff again...
Well...

This is on David Arnolds website
"Well the song has been written and recorded with Chris Cornell.David and Chris wrote the song together and it was recorded in Air Studios London and mixed in L.A. David is currently in the middle of writing the score, and to clear up some confusion over the Hotdog magazine article, david didnt say that he was re using the theme for OHMSS in Casino Royale, he actually said that as a model for music,Casino Royale was closer to OHMSS than any other Bond movie in as much that the film didnt rely on the James Bond theme and managed to create a James Bond music world regardless. The theme for OHMSS is not in the score to Casino Royale. But new themes are included."

Love it! The full Bond theme does not come up till the end, I think that's great. It's establishing the character and I would expect that the theme that goes with him would not be there till James himself matured as a character, becoming more of what we expect of him.

I think music was used better in OHMSS than in any other Bond film. Only TB comes close. If Arnold is using that sound design as a blueprint for his own score, well all the better.

As to the poster worried about a techno score, I don't think there's much risk of that happening. Arnold did say that he was unable to score Daniel Craig's Bond in the same way as Brosnan's. Craig's Bond was different and required a different kind of music.

Well, I'd say Barry's work on YOLT is superior to OHMSS, but only by a very small margin. Both YOLT and OHMSS are the two crowning scores of the Bond series.

All we know specifically is the familiar guitar twang won't be heard until the end.

the music will never be the same as it was because the films arent what they were.
I watched Dr No the other night and it was amazing how much talking was in it, same with YOLT and FRWL.not a lot of action where as the modern bond films are packed with action. It doesnt leave as much space for mood music as it all needs driving music to support the action.I hope CR is not wall to wall music it would be bad if it was.

Well, I didn't mean that final chord. I meant the whole guitar section of the Bond theme - the main part - won't be heard in the familiar, guitar-played fashion until the end credits.

Oh, I see. Well in any case, thanks for caring.

For my 2 cents worth into this thread: I will miss the trumpet fanfare of the main theme during the body of the film if, in fact, it does not show up until the end. I'd prefer to have it thrice. Once during the gunbarrel. Once to close the film. And once during the "climax" of the main story, wherever that may be.

Yep, that should be worth about 2 cents.

I've always wanted to see it return and I thought that if the main theme wasn't going to appear at the end, the OHMSS theme would be a perfect substitute.

Heaven forbid that Arnold should come up with something original, like a real composer should do (Though his muck does seem to appeal to the tin-eared kids out there that are not aware of what a composer should do with a film; i.e., score the film and not try to sell an album).

Per the script, as he is not being allowed to use the 'Bond' theme until the end, where Craig's last line is "Bond, James Bond.", you would think he would come up with something original. However, I am forgetting that this is David Arnold, and class, talent and originality are not adjectives that can ever be applied to him. So much for the 'newness' of this film in terms of sound.

The guy just cannot die soon enough for me!

So let me get this straight; The James Bond theme will not be used untill the end of the movie. so all of the action sequences will have not even a little bit of the bond theme added. Arnold you've gone to far this time :)

We've known this for awhile.
