I was at a panel today of some video game writers and producers and they said for a movie-based game releasing it "day and date" with the film is now considered critical. This is because the video game needs to feed from the advertising of the movie. He said even a week delay makes a massive difference in the sales. So there's your answer.
What disappointing news. They can't make the November release date and so shelve the game completely? That seems rather like a cop-out to me. Rare's original GoldenEye was released two years after the movie itself (the same year as Tomorrow Never Dies!). And for a studio as large as EA, it should be possible to put together at least an acceptable product.
Ah, thanks for that. Fair enough - video games must benefit from official buzz and marketing for the film. However, I can't help thinking, rather cynically, that if EA were to take the time and talent to produce a truly well thought out and constructed game, with nuanced gameplay and exceptional replay value, advertising from the movie itself wouldn't be quite so crucial. The word of mouth about the game would be so enthuasiastic that it would drive sales through the roof, in a snap. Of course, the game and situation that I'm talking about, again, is the original GoldenEye.
Excuse my bitterness. They don't make games like they used to.

For once I'd like to see a Bond game focused more upon the role-playing aspect. Less shooting and more investigating, more along the lines of Splinter Cell. I know their main demographic are teens, but more and more generations are becoming gamers these days, it's no longer just a pastime for kids.
Agreed, even the investigative stuff ends up being an action sequence (Nightfire).

This really sucks! I have played all the other bond games to completion and have been waiting for Casino Royale. Hopefully they'll come out with something else soon.
I guess we'll know in the first week of May at E3; if EA do have something Bond-related in the works, they're sure to unveil it there.

As far as the story not being sutiable for a game, I disagree. The story would make a great espionage thriller game. Plenty of material to use. I think making the November deadline killed this game.

Why doesn't EA come out with a Casino Royale themed poker or perhaps even a casino game with blackjack, craps, roulette, and baccarat where you can play as Characters from Casino Royale and perhaps previous Bond games/films and maybe throw in an online mode. They could do that in time for the November deadline.
Yeah I posted this idea myself a while ago. At least I thought I did. I definitely at least had the idea in my head anyway They could even just call it 'CASINO ROYALE', and have a big Texas hold 'em tournament where you work your way from lesser Bond villains (Largo, Sanchez, etc) up to the final one-on-one with Le Chiffre, with all the different casinos to play in - The Whyte House, the Isthmus Casino, Monte Carlo, etc. I'd get it!

Exactly! A Bond themed casino game. We've already had a driving spin off so why not a game featuring Bond's other skills. As I said before it can be done since it wouldn't be as complex as a game like EON or FRWL and it would be perfect to coicide with the film. A new type of Bond film, a new kind of Bond game!

I'm curious how much leeway they would have with this course. Casino Royale was obviously a novel published in 1953, a TV episode in '54, and a film in '67, but since 1992 it is also a casino in Las Vegas on the strip. They're probably unrestricted, but I find it somewhat interesting (legally anyway). Related to this, I wonder what kind of promotional deals they'll have with casinos and this film. I don't think MGM and the MGM Grand are affilitated anymore (MGM sold to Sony and I think MGM Grand is owned by Bally now). When I first went to Vegas in March 2003 they had, however, a bunch of slotmachines affiliated with Die Another Day, where you could try and win the '007 edition' Thunderbird (I believe this was at the MGM Grand).

Rare's 007 game is the greatest, however, if rare tried to make a 007 game these days, Money-soft, oop, I'm sorry Exclusive-soft, ahhh, dang it, I meant Microsoft, yeah, would only port it to their precious X-box, which is why I will always disagree with Rare being handed the 007 reins. LET EA KEEP THEM!!!!! So they're not perfect, but damit, at least they don't make them exclusive to one console. I mean, Christ, doesn't Bill Gates have enough money as it is?I like Rare's effort best of all.

That's one problem that I would have with Rare getting the license back, but I would also have to wonder if Rare could even do a comparable job at this point in time to their effort on GE. Most of the GE development team has left and went to the company that now does the Timesplitters games, and Rare's last FPS (Perfect Dark Zero) was just awful. Plus, it takes Rare so long to put out a game, with delay upon delay upon delay, only for the finished product to be considerably poor, especially considering how much "extra" work that they've put into it.

Are ya thinkin Rare isn't as great as it used to be there, Star of The Living Daylights?

That's exactly what I think. I haven't been greatly impressed with anything that Rare has done since GE, but their recent efforts have been very poor despite being delayed to the point where a quality product should be expected, when taking into consideration how much time they spent working on it. I think that, should the rights be transfered, that they should go to the guys who make the Timesplitters games, since that's where a good number of the original GE production team from Rare currently are.

Even if it was announced today (or at E3!) that Rare would be making a Goldeneye sequel, there's no way it could match up to the thrill of the original, which was groundbreaking in many ways, with its 4 player split screen, dual weapons, non-stop action etc. It was lightning in a bottle, and I don't think that a whole lot of its success had anything to do with it being a James Bond game. Shooters that do all these things and a lot more are a dime a dozen these days, its a genre that's become a bit stagnant.
The only thing remotely cool that could be done with Goldeneye is to make the original game playable online (on Xbox Live, or on the Revolution, er, I mean, Wii(?!)) for 8 (or 16!!) players. Otherwise, its a game of the past, we don't need a ho-hum sequel that will only serve to remind us of how good the original was.

I would say they're not as great. Most of the people that were involved in making GoldenEye 007 left anyway to form Free Radical Design. Pretty much all their games for GameCube, Xbox, and thus far the 360 haven't really impressed me. Not to say they're bad, but they do lack the usual RARE flair of their games from the 64 days and even before that (Battletoads, Killer Instinct, and RC Pro-Am, specifically).

I agree 100%
My thinking is that they EON should put a hold on the Bond videogames while they search for a new, competent production company, because EA just simply isn't getting the job done. Maybe they should talk to the team that does the Metal Gear Solid games, as I'm sure that they could, at least, make a Bond game that has much more depth and much more interesting storylines (as well as better gameplay) than EA is capable of.

GE on N64 was a classic. Can't be topped for that era of gaming.
EON and NF (IMO) were actually playable and enjoyed them more than most - and I did somewhat enjoy FRWL - but something is always missing - missed opportunities.
I hope Activision does well with the franchise.
Also, what's wrong with releasing a video game AFTER the movie - for greater quality? I don't mind waiting if it means getting a great game.\

GE on N64 was a classic.
Kind of amusing that the 'ones in charge' complained was so un-Bond-like is the one that fans seem to almost universally cite as the best.

Goodie, I didn't know they would make a game based on two moves. Can't wait until it comes out in stores. I'm definitely sure to buy it. I just hope it's as good as it soundsNo fear, it has all come full circle. Thank god they are including CR in with the QoS content.
