I'd liked the return of Dave Hedison.
Yes a 79 year old Felix would be perfect

The reason I bring this up is because sometimes some film studios feel that they need to be more politically correct and have other races represented. But why do they automatically think of having a black person first to fill that quota? That is so old - are they really under-represented in Hollywood as much as some might think? There are a fair number of black actors in Hollywood in fairy prominent roles - even the lead sometimes (Denzel Washington, Will Smith to name a few). However, most Chinese actors will usually be typecast in a martial arts movie. Why not do something a bit different and have one playing Felix Leiter? Nevermind about the western-sounding name - they can find some way to explain that.
Someone like Russell Wong could've played Leiter in a future Bond movie. He's articulate and has the right qualities. There must be others too (and I don't mean the likes of Jackie Chan or Jet Li) who wouldn't just be reduced to either some sort of martial arts agent or some minor sidekick (like David Yip in AVTAK). Surely they must be able to have an oriental actor who could seem like a fully-fledged CIA man in his own right? The same goes for other nationalities.

David Hedison was a terrific Felix Leiter in LALD & LTK, but his time has unfortunately passed. For me, Bond & Leiter are contemporaries. Leiter is no mentor, no father figure.
As for Wright is Wrong? Since I have yet to see him act I will reserve my judgement until I have seen Casino Royale.

Its actually more to do with economics than any politically correct motives. The Hollywood logic is if you stick a black actor into an otherwise all-white cast, then the black audience will be more interested in seeing it; the most obvious example of this is the sore thumb-like casting of Mos Def in the Hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy.
In this case though, I don't think race even came into it. Daniel Craig worked with Wright in The Visiting before shooting CR, so it was probably his suggestion that Wright would be good for the role - and having an Emmy/Tony winning actor in your cast is a pretty good proposition whatever his skin color.

On the race issue, I dont have a problem that he's black, it just bugs me that once again they've chosen someone that looks nothing like how Felix is described in the books. That's it. Jack Lord was the only one even remotely close. I just want a straw-haired, wiry guy with a Texan's personality and accent to play the man just once...is that too much to ask?
Regarding your second point - if the producers had just cast a white actor for a white character part - then there wouldn`t be any upset fans who didn`t want a black actor cast.
What about the upset fans who don't care for this actor's abilities? Shouldnt we cast based on experience and not on appearance? How shallow can we get eh?
I agree. Acting ability should be made the top priority, not appearance.
Icecold, I agree with you 100%. This has nothing to do with race, or being shallow, this has everything to do with the fact that the producers and director keep harping on about being FAITHFUL to Fleming`s novel.
Why is it so hard for some people on this forum who cannot respect what certain fans want in a Bond film, especially if it`s supposed to be faithful to the novel? Like I said before, there are people here that only want you to agree with them, and when you don`t, you`re labeled a pyriah and a non fan. Absolutely crazy.
Now we have Bond`s character being a former SAS squaddie!!!!!!, a black actor playing a WHITE character called Felix Leiter and an Italian actor 26 years OLDER than Craig, playing FRENCH agent Rene Mathis, (who was no more than 5-10 years older than Bond in the books). Continuity and history goes out of the window in B&W`s world, causing problems for the next film in the series as to: where do we go from here?
Best
Andy
Well said.

The film is called Wrong Is Right and it was released in 1982. Connery plays a TV news reporter investigating the theft of two nuclear devices and their subsequent sale to terrorists.
And then he did another THUNDERBALL remake the following year.
