It's simple - the folks at EON eventually get round to making movies of the continuation novels. License Renewed is first up - and you get given control of the movie. You help the writers with modifying the story, you help with casting and you even help pick the singer - so this is your chance to shine.

You can use whomever you want as Bond:

COULDN'T FIND A GOOD PICTURE OF RODRIGO SANTORO
Rodrigo Santoro as Franco

Locations: Canada, Miami, Italy

Plot:

In the PTS we see Bond try to prevent a nuclear bomb being stolen by a team of hi-tech terrorists - in Chechnya.

CIA report that they have lost track of a terrorist known as Franco and have reason to believe he has met with a nuclear physicist known as Anton Murik. MI6 wants Bond to investigate - so he goes undercover as a journalist at an Ice Hockey game in Vancouver (Canada) and arranges to 'bump into' Murik and his ward, Solange (a model, she is Muriks niece) and garners an invite to a party at Murik's residence (a former ski resort) where he discovers Murik is involved with something known as Operation Warlock. Bond finds that he and Solange are virtual prisoners after being forced to play a one on one game of Ice Hockey with Caber (it turns violent, both using the puck and stick as weapons) - but finds out where Franco is and manages to escape to Miami where he eventually catches Franco, learning the true extent of Operation Warlock - the plan to blow up the Vatican with the stolen nuclear bomb from Chechnya. Bond realises Murik is using Solange as a cover to move the bomb about - so rushes to Milan to intercept Murik's private jet but the Italian police find nothing on the plane so Murik is cleared. Bond, however, gets captured by Caber - who drugs him and he wakes up, being tortured by Mary Jane whom he kills when he escapes before slaughtering Caber and chasing after Solange and Murik, locating the nuclear bomb (its on the private jet which is on a crash course into the Vatican) and crashlanding the private jet on a mediterranean island - where he relaxes with Solange.

How would you do a movie version of the novel ?

Everybody pretend for a minute that Licence to Kill was called Licence Revoked and Timothy Dalton got at least one more movie after it.

Licence Renewed would be his '91 picture. Helmed by John Glen, it details 007's attempt to get back into the good graces of MI6 and the Double-O Section. Instead of being a field agent, MI6 has re-instated James Bond as nothing more than a desk worker, similar to the beginning of the novel. Once the issue of Franco and Murik comes up, M begrudgingly realizes the only man for the job would be Bond, and thusly renews his licence to kill on a temporary basis; if he survives and succeeds in his assignment, he can be reactivated as a Double O Agent (similar to the novel of TMWTGG). If not...well, he's dead anyway. Dalton-Bond is then sent to...I hate to ape Terminus' idea, but an ice hockey game would be ideal since the horse race was co-opted by AVTAK, to meet up with Murik, and from then on it would progress mostly similar to the novel.

For the PTS, it'd be a little like Live and Let Die in that you don't actually see Bond, or if you do you see him very little. I picture something involving a terrorist action by Franco resulting in the deaths of two MI6 agents, leaving the audience unclear about whatever became of 007. Or it could just be the airport scene from the novel, that could work too. If the first idea is used, there should be a little nod to the idea that maybe the PTS took place during Bond's campaign against Sanchez, with M stating that their 'best man has gone missing' or something to that effect.

I would also like to insert some scenes, lifted from COLD, about M remarking that he may be replaced by a woman, who turns out to be Dench after another movie. These could be placed into whatever follows LR instead if Dalton gets one more before Goldeneye.

Dalton's portrayl would be somewhere between TLD and LTK; he'd be a little more light-hearted and jokey than he was in LTK, but the sting of what happened to Felix still weighs heavy upon his mind. Maybe throw in a scene of him talking to the now prosthetic-equipped Felix and recapping what happened in LTK early in the film. This would, of course, be the most continuity-reliant Bond movie since the SPECTRE quadrilogy, but Licence Renewed would serve as a good way to reel back in the viewers who were a tad alienated by LTK's departure from the formula.

Dalton as Bond, Brown as M, and let's throw Samantha Bond in early since she's my favorite Moneypenny.

The tagline would be something like "On Her Majesty's Secret Service Once Again" or maybe something simple like "Bond is Back!".

Theme song? I dunno, I'm having a hard time remembering who would've been popular and a candidate at the time. Maybe it would be a OHMSS-style instrumental, or somebody completely left-field like Faith No More. :)

Oh, and he gets his PPK and the Silver Beast.

I would have thought Goldeneye, would be more appropiate to be called 'Licence Renewed'.

I like Flash's idea. I was going to go the "Owen as Bond" route but, it'll be hard to top Flash's suggestion.

Back when LTK was License Revoked(or should I spell it Licence?), I thought that this would be a great opportunity for Eon to start filming the Gardner novels. The only problem I saw was the fact the we, the masses, might get confused with two movies that both start "License...". After all, we didn't know what "revoked" meant.

Hey, thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback.

However, making it an Owen picture would help my casting ideas, since I kinda wanted Bob Hoskins as Murik and Sienna Miller as Lavender, and neither of them would have been age appropriate during the Dalton era. That, and I've wanted Owen to be Bond since Sin City. He's Lavender's new boyfriend and he's out of his mind.

I dig it.

And is that Dennis Hopper as Murik? That's seriously the best casting idea I've heard for him! He'd be perfect!

Funny that we both suggested characters from the Super Mario Bros. movie for Murik. Let's see John Leguizamo as Caber, eh? :)

That's a wonderful setup, Flash1087

As for the theme song, these lyrics were recently unearthed. Perhaps from the time when LTK was Licence Revoked and they were planning back-to-back Dalton fims and there was talk of Dalton not staying in the role and A. N. Other interested in taking over the role?

Perhaps?

I need, I need, I've got to hold on to that part
Oooh.

Hey Cubby, you thought I was the one who tried to run away.
Ohh, Cubby, but all along I really wanted to stay.
Please don't bet that you'll ever forget me
Hope you get the rights back soon.

Got a licence renewed (they sued)

Yes you do (your side)
Ohh, Cubby, now you can depend on me to make things right (things right)

Licensed renewed to me was much like a view to a kill. It had about the same plot going on. But anyways, I myself would like to see pierce back as bond.

anton murik- Christopher walken
lavender peacock- charlize theran
mary jane- jane semore
bond- pierce bronsan
caber- micheal clark dunkin

I haven't finshed reading it all yet but I'm about half way through it.

Apologies that this is off-topic - I haven't thoroughly read this thread through because there are bound to be some spoilers in it (the nature of this sort of subject). I am three chapters into Licence Renewed and it is my first dabble into the Gardner world. I have read all of Fleming's novels, 3 of Benson's, and Colonel Sun too. I bought a book on ebay that contained re-prints of Gardner's first three books.

ANYWAY - to the point. I think the book so far is excellent. Much much better than the standard of writing in a Benson novel and (so far) the equal of CS - a book I thoroughly enjoyed. So, on the basis of only reading 40 odd pages, I have to agree that LR would make an excellent film (does anyone else read it whilst picturing Dalton as Bond? Connery is my favourite, but I guess it must be the 80s thing that gets me thinking of Dalton).

I do picture Dalton as Bond in LR, feel free to read my earlier post to see why.

LR is my second-favorite all-around Bond novel (right beind CR) and my hands-down favorite non-Fleming novel (look at all those hyphens!). I think it's a fantastic book.

That I can completely understand given that it was published first in 1981. I just think the whole character of Bond in this novel is very Dalton-esque - can't competantly explain why, guess I'll have a better idea when I finish the book.

Glad it's highly thought of. After Benson's books LR is like a breath of fresh air - the standard of writing is no worse than some of his contemporaries like Tom Clancy, but please, I don't really want the character of Bond to be associated with writing of such an ordinary and unimaginitive style.

Dalton-Bond is then sent to...I hate to ape Terminus' idea, but an ice hockey game would be ideal since the horse race was co-opted by AVTAK, to meet up with Murik, and from then on it would progress mostly similar to the novel.

How about Emu racing. Yea, emu racing sounds quite Bondish.

I really do think the book lends itself well to a film adaption. Murik is a cool villain, as is Franco. And the scene when Franco accidentally shoots Mary Jane Mashkin when attempting to assassinate Lavander sounds like it'd be amazing on film. If it went anything like the way it went in my head, it'd rock.

Also, when casting Caber, I'd like to see Michael Clarke Duncan take the role. The guy is huge!

Hello, I'm new here, but I couldn't resist posting to this, as I just finished the novel...

BOND: Daniel Craig (No sense fixing what isn't broken...)

M: Judi Dench

ANNE "Q'UTE" REILLY: Cate Blanchett

DR. ANTON MURIK: Malcolm McDowell

MARY JANE MASHKIN: Marg Helgenberger

LAVENDER PEACOCK: Rachel Weisz

CABER: Angus Macfadyen

FRANCO: Eduardo Noriega

MISC:

"The Silver Beast" would be either the next-gen (c. 2008) Saab 9-3 (the direct descendent of the 900) or the larger 9-5; equipped with the same gadgets as the book. If the filmmakers INSIST on a sports car, then let's give them the Saab Aero-X!

I'm so glad someone else bumped this, because I get to say how much I love the LR song lyrics

And, I don't mean to be an [censored], but:

ANNE "Q'UTE" REILLY: Cate Blanchett

No way!! I'm Australian and I have zero desire for Cate. Q'ute is supposed to be one of those prim but desirable types, not at all what Blanchett is (think: her as Bob Dylan).

I adore the book, had no idea Gardner would be so good, but really, the plot is very similar to some of Fleming's (Goldfinger, or maybe a Blofeld?). More overlap/infringement than original.

I could see it, but personally whenever I read Q'ute I see the body of one of my exes and hear the voice of a friend. Bit odd, in that usually my brain either invents wholly new bodies and voices or leans on actors. Franco, for example, my brain makes Viggo Mortensen. Why? Hell if I know.
