Nah, I didn't see it. And, besides, I don't have Sky, or indeed anything other than the five terrestrial channels. So any and all transcripts and nuggets of info to do with the conference here on CBn will be gratefully received. :)

For what it's worth, I called my dad who's a huge Bond fan having read all the novels when he was in high school and college, and told him about the news. His reaction was one of excitement, along the lines of "Great, now we get a new Bond movie." He's isn't the most movie savvy person in the world, so he's never even heard of Craig. But he was still excited because it meant that there is concrete proof of a new movie and even better that it's "Casino Royale".

Daniel Craig takes on 007 mantle

Actor Daniel Craig has been confirmed as the new James Bond.

The English star of gangster film Layer Cake, who arrived at a press conference in London by speedboat, will play a tougher, grittier and darker 007.

"It's a huge challenge. Life is about challenges and this is one of the big ones as an actor," said Craig, 37, who will be the sixth James Bond.

He joked he "had a couple of Martinis" when he got the role. Casino Royale is due to start filming in January.

"We've got an incredible script and that's my first line of attack," he said. "Once I'd read that, I realised that I didn't have a choice. I had to go for it."

He admitted taking the role was a big responsibility but added: "I've just got to step up to the plate and deal with it."

Bond was "a huge iconic figure in movie history and these things don't come along very often", he said.

Director Martin Campbell said the 21st Bond film would be "definitely darker, more character, less gadgets".

Craig told reporters: "Together with Martin, I want to make the best film we can, the most entertaining film we can."

The actor said he was not looking to redefine the role, but added: "It's a question of taking it somewhere maybe where it's never gone before."

Craig said he had received encouragement from predecessor Pierce Brosnan and had tried to think of it "like any other job".

He also admitted there was a danger of being "trapped" by being stereotyped in the role.

But he said: "I'm not allowing myself to think in that way. I'm thinking about the agenda ahead and the agenda ahead is to make the best movie we can."

Producer Michael G Wilson said the film-makers considered more than 200 actors from around the world over two years before settling on Craig.

Neither Q nor Moneypenny will appear, Mr Wilson added, but M will return. However, it was not confirmed whether Dame Judi Dench will play the spy chief.

Producers are now setting their sights on finding a female star to fill what Mr Campbell said would be the "best Bond girl part" ever.

Casino Royale will be an adaptation of author Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, in which the spy was introduced as a more youthful and cold character than he has been portrayed on film.

"I certainly think it will be a little bit darker - that's not to say it won't have its sense of humour, of course it will have that," Mr Campbell said.

Mr Wilson also revealed work had already started on the 22nd James Bond film, which would be Craig's second as 007.

The actor's first major role was in the BBC Two drama Our Friends in the North in 1996 and he rose to prominence in Hollywood alongside Tom Hanks in Road To Perdition in 2002.

He has since played poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Sylvia and headlined Layer Cake, which co-starred Sienna Miller.

He is also to appear in Steven Spielberg's new drama Munich, about the Olympic massacre of 1972.

Craig will follow in the footsteps of previous Bond stars Pierce Brosnan, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.

Interesting that there's now a question mark over Dench's return. I've never been a fan of her M, but I don't mind if she comes back.

As I suspected, they seem to be planning on getting Craig's second Bond flick in cinemas as soon as possible after CASINO ROYALE, to firmly establish him as Bond in the public mind as quickly as possible. And perhaps there will be story links between CR and BOND 22.

Did I write "BOND 22"? Even though they've clearly abandoned the most extreme form of Young Bond reboot (this is obvious simply from the casting of Craig), it looks as though CR may be the start of an all-new Bond franchise, BOND 1 instead of BOND 21. I'd still prefer a "regular" change of 007 actor and a bit of continuity with the other films, which you could do effortlessly with Craig, but, oh well.

Interesting about Dame Judi... hopefully she won't be in it.

But I'm really digging this mild-restart idea. I hated the "young Bond" thing, but the way they seem to be doing it now is right up my alley.

I don't necessarily see this as no continuity at all. Now if Rikki Lee hadn't turned down the role............ :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) And if you believed that one :) Of course we must take Travolta's word without zero proof. But anyway with Craig you can still have continuity with his age--it would be like he's Bond a year or so before Dr. No. Though Dench wouldn't make sense there.

Some pretty poor questions from those journalists. The question about Sienna Miller and Kate Moss was really below-the-belt and graceless, especially as the very first question. Seems meanspirited. Craig's first appearance as Bond---- not saying they should all have been sucking up to him, but no need to try and kick him in the teeth and rock his confidence at the very first opportunity. And what was all that stuff about going to public school? Did Connery go to public school? Did any of them, in fact? Does it matter? Honestly, the bloody British tabloids. *Shakes head in exasperation*

Yeah that question about Sienna Miller was really, really tasteless!! This is supposed to be an exciting day for Daniel Craig becoming 007 and not having him deal with more questions about that unfortunate incident!! That lady journalist should have been kicked out of the conference!!

Is that really a big surprise that they asked him about Miller and Moss. They're journalists for heavens sake! Digging for 'dirt' is par for the course.
I am just curious if anyone asked him (or the producers) about the overwhelming
un-favourable reaction from the public. And why take such a (financial) gamble
when the last four films were such a financial success.

Unbelievable wasn't it.I was shouting 'WHAT???' at the TV over that public school question ( and I dont believe any of the previous Bonds went to public school ). They really are mindless. The woman with the Miller/Moss question was from the Daily Mirror, which says it all.The questions were very poor IMO.A bit of research wouldn't have gone a miss. You can understand why actors get fed up with it.

About time that this announcement was made. I do agree that Connery fans should have no problem getting warm to Craig as Bond. (My side was with Jackman though, and he adamantly stated he had been offered the role a month and a few days ago - is this bollocks?) Everything about this film is looking fantastic - Haggis doing the polish, Stuart Baird editing, Arnold doing music (I assume less techno exploration as well and something more Barry-ish), and Campbell back at the helm. My only reservation are those golden locks of his...I guess we're all wondering if he was truly jesting or not. Hair does look darker in that first shot of him though doesn't it?

Interesting about Dench. I was a fan of her M, but I'd really rather she didn't return. New Bond, new direction, new M... (and new M's office!)

I have a question about this "mid-restart". Does this mean they'll be re-doing the classics like Dr. No and From Russia With Love, only more up to date and with Craig? Or a film of a different name with similar story elements and characters, yet a newly written script?

If that's the case, then I hope it's untrue. I couldn't sit through another rendition of the classics, especially when they were all so good. Would someone please help this confused boy out?

I tend to think that no remaking/revisioning of the earlier films will be done. I think we'll just see new films with new stories and new characters.

I should think Daniel Craig will portray Bond like Timothy did. True to the Fleming character.

I think he'll probably do a decent job.

Can't say that I'm still a fan of the 'Bond begins' crap

I liked Daniel Craig's entrance. Nice Bondian touch. I also think he looked pretty good in those photos. I'm getting more excited to see Casino Royale than I already was. I think he will pull this off fairly easily.

One person I think Craig resembles is former tennis star Boris Becker.

I am disappointed to hear that there will be no Moneypenny or Q in Casino Royale. I think that is a mistake. I don't see why the producers couldn't have them in the movie. It shouldn't be all that hard to include them. They don't have to be big parts, but just to have them there in any capacity would be a welcome return.

One of the best things I've heard from the press conference was that Purvis and Wade are already writing Bond 22 which would seem to indicate that there will 007 in 2007!
