Mixed reactions to this article. On one hand, I'm VERY happy Eon is starting to comment on the Bond #6 search, but I'm also sad Brosnan truly has no chance. Even though we all pretty much knew he was out last year, I was still holding out hope that the Bond #6 search would come up short and they'd have to go back to Pierce.

Guess this also puts to rest the rumors that a decision has already been made, be it Owen or whomever, and that an announcement is imminent. I think they best thing about this article is it will shut down the cottage industry of internet "insiders" for a while.

Great job, [dark]. :)

Wonder how Pierce-B over at AJB will respond to this. Wait, I know, he won't respond to it because he's a deceiving nobody who sits in his computer room all day just responding to posts that praise him as being the greatest thing in the world.

I'm glad that we can finally rule Pierce out of the picture. He was done after DAD, and it's time for EON to go out and find the new Bond.

"Ring back in a couple of months if you want to know more"?

Looks like a decision/announcement isn't that far off. Unless Eon were fobbing him off and hoping the inquiries will all go away.

Nah.

The way I read into this, the Eon spokesperson in question sounds sick and tired of fielding calls about the Bond #6 hunt (which presumably, they've been giving the "no comment" treatment to).

So they've started dropping tiny bits of information that may stop the constant phone calls, while simultaneously stomping out some of those absurd rumours we've been hearing.

It's probably all in the wording, but it sounds like it was a very abrupt phone call.

I am ever the skeptic, and remain so here. Like I said earlier, I know longer CARE who plays Bond at this point -- find someone and make a damn movie already!!!

I find it interesting that somebody from this paper merely called up and actually talked to somebody at EON, who in turn gave them something on the record. Is it that simple, and if so, why hasn't somebody else done it before?

Did a reporter merely pick up the phone and ask as opposed to the others who just went with the flavor of the week?

To paraphrase George Clooney in Out of Sight "You'd be amazed at what you can get just by asking."

Maybe just because EON was silent for a long time didn't mean it was totally going to be noncommunicative. Just maybe nobody thought to ask, or at least ask in the right way.

My thoughts exactly that this should close the persistent speculation and so called inside info saying Clive Owen is all signed up. And yes this should make life tough for purveyors of bull. After a month or two they'll probably return. Looks like we have nothing to do in the CR forum for a couple of months.

And one last time and now for certain, I will like to say kudos to Pierce for a fine job as Bond. Did Eon make a wise decision in this? If the new Bond disappoints especially financially then Eon would have really mucked this up. Only time will tell BUT it is certainly no sure thing that they will be able to pull this switch off well.

I'm surprised how definitive the dismissal of Pierce was, in that quote. So, if Sony wants to go back to Pierce for a sound business move, is Eon saying, "Absolutely not" to them? Makes you wonder what's going on at the top (and that the Pierce-Eon relationship must really be frayed).

Eon probably feel there's no reason to announce who Bond #6 will be until the press conference just before shooting starts in January.

Finally EON has silenced those who think Mr Brosnan will return.

Blofeld's Cat has a good point, I feel the new Bond may be announced in Jan '06 at the CR press conference.

I agree with that comment as well, but their will be some leaked facts along the way. I am putting my money of Nov '05 is when Ioan Gruffudd will be announced. :) :)

Or am I getting confused here?

That's that then. I was kind of clinging to the hope Brosnan might be back for one more and as disappointing as this is, i'm glad that i now have closure on his time as Bond. If the reviews of The Matador are anything to go by, Pierce is going to have a very healthy and interesting career post-Bond.

As for the next Bond - now it's not Brosnan, i'm hoping Clive Owen get's the gig.

January? Why so pessimistic? Didn't this Eon employee hint heavily that there'd be news in a couple of months? By which time it'll be June, and since Brosnan was announced in June 1994 for a film due in November 1995, I think it's entirely possible that the new Bond will be revealed in, well, a couple of months.

Is a June announcement certain? Of course not, but if there's no June announcement then I reckon it'll be in July, or August, or September, or even October.... but January? Nah, we won't have to wait that long.

Like Zencat, I'm glad that Eon is finally acknowledging the rumours, and attempting to stamp some of them out. That said, it's a disappointment to hear that Brosnan will not be returning to the role. I'll miss the old boy. :)

Interesting other points in that article. Adrian Lester? Where did the reporter get it from? Just starting another rumour for the sake of it? I really like Adrian Lester, but apart from the fact that he's black - something that the article fails to mention, for some reason, but which will surely rule him out - he's hardly ruthless. I don't know - that whole business about Lester sounds planted to me. Where have there been rumours about him as Bond? We've heard just about every actor rumoured, but not him. So who planted that? Odd.

And Peter Snow auditioned for OHMSS? First I have ever heard that. Again, where did the reporter get it from? It sounds pretty implausible. Q, yes. Bond? Was Snow ever an actor?

Whatever. In my opinion it's not over until the cameras roll on Casino Royale. However unlikely at this point, it is still possible that Pierce Brosnan can come back as James Bond in Casino Royale. Just keep in mind that John Gavin was signed in 1970 to play James Bond for Diamonds Are Forever only to be replaced by Sean Connery at the insistence of United Artists and James Brolin was offered the job for Octopussy only to be replaced by Roger Moore at the 11th hour.

I often wonder what things Eon spokespeople would have said if there was an Internet during Cubby Broccoli's time. Would they have commented that "It's definitely not Sean Connery" in 1970 after the departure of George Lazenby?

Pierce Brosnan and Eon/MGM/UA/Sony can still kiss and make up and whatever negative comments that have been said in the press can still be spin doctored.

I like Pierce and would be happy with him back as Bond one more time(while at the same time seeing other strong candidates who can replace him) BUT it really is EXTREMELY unlikely now. Maybe not impossible if some late emergency agreemnent comes about BUT still that is so very, very unlikely when you consider how Eon has just bluntly dismissed the possibility of Pierce being back as Bond.
