I'm not a big fan of TND(surrender was way better), but I love Sheryl Crows other music. I was dissapointed with her bond theme, felt she could have done better.

I find Crow's Tomorrow Never Dies theme to be kind of on it's own compared with alot of her other songs. I just don't see it in the same view as ones such as All I Wanna Do for example.

I posed the question in the forums on sherylcrow.com about the possible reasons why her Tomorrow Never Dies song had not charted in the US. No one could really explain why.

I wonder how much it was aired on the radio at the time. Were the Brosnan Bond songs often on, with the exception of Die Another Day?

How about the obvious answer: it wasn't an interesting or memorable song, so very few people bought it.

I guess, but it didn't even reach #40 on the BILLBOARD TOP 40!? :)

Mind you the CD single cover does not inspire one to part with one's money to have it.

The CD single for Tomorrow Never Dies was pretty much nothing. Not one remix.

I hate to say it, but I'm not a big fan of any of them. None of them stand out in the classic Barry mold, IMHO.

Goldeneye: I like the music, the lyrics are O.K. But "Not Lace or Leather..." also "It's a gold and honey trap"...not so good. Also, when Turner screams out "GoldenEEEEEEEYYYYYYYEEEEE!"

Tomorrow Never Dies: I like this song. Really nice background, and Sheryl Crow's agood singer.

The World is Not Enough: This is my sister's favorite. I like the music, the vocals are not bad...

Die Another Day: I love this song. Although it's not classic Bond, Madonna puts on a good performance. Also, the music video...I actually like it. My friends don't...

So, Die Another Day.

Goldeneye: By far my most favorite title songs of the Brosnan films. Tina Turner just has the right voice for singing a Bond song. Bono and the Edge did a great job writting this tune (maybe U2 should do the title song for Casino Royale).

Tomorrow Never Dies: My next favorite. Its got the classic Bond sound to it. Sheryl Crowe may not be my most favorite singer, (hell they could have totaly screwed this up and chosen Alanis Morrisette to do the song!), but her voice just seems right for this. It also happens to be my most favorite film of all the Brosnan Bonds.

The World is Not Enough: From this point, things start to go down hill. Will the theme tune is quite good, I'm still scratching my head as to how Garbage was chosen to perform it. I'll always associate them with that damn annoying " Stupid Girl" song.

Die Another Day: The absolute worst song that has had the misfortune to be associated with 007. Madonna may have done a decent Bond tune back when she was still making decent music in the 80's and early 90's, but there is no excuse for this techno-train wreck of a theme tune. I sincerely hope the produces make amends for Casino Royale. Make it an instrumental tune like OHMSS, if they can't find a suitable singer.

Unfortunately, I will be at BCW8 when Garbage plays in my town (I know...cry me a river). If it weren't for such an event, I would definitely like to see if 'The World is not Enough' was in their set...somehow I doubt it...

Would be nice, though...

It's a toss up for me between TND and TWINE, though I don't think either are fantastic.

My favorite Brosnan song is Surrender by KD Lang, played over TND's end credits.

My favorite song by far has to be The World is not Enough... I love the lyrics and the way Shirley Manson sings it.... well and the fact that Garbage is one of my favorite bands... so the combination of Bond and Garbage was awesome...

North Scorpion, I went to a Garbage concert like three weeks ago and unfortunately they did not play TWINE. It is not on their set list for the Bleed Like Me tour. I know they played it live back in the Version 2.0 tour...

I actually really like Madonna's song for "DAD". I'd actually go as far as to say it's my favourite from the Brosnan era! I like Tina Turner's tune aswell, but I'm not really too keen on Sheryl Crow's effort. The worst one has to be the tune be Garbage. What a boring dirge!

DAD was the best IMO. Great song, great video, and it was the first actual hit from a Bond movie since the 80's.

I like The World Is Not Enough theme by Garbage the most. It works very well in the movie and as a stand alone song, plus I'm a Garbage fan  . Goldeneye feels very Bond to me which I like, Tomorrow Never Dies is ok, Madonna sounds very annoying performing Die Another Day :D .

I chose TWINE as the best in a bad bunch. It staggers me that, in Pierce's films, so many good performers have turned out such dismal songs.

GoldenEye - slow and boring, crap lyrics, lacks balls, lacks energy. Tina Turner has a great vocal range and a powerful voice: give her something that lets her use it!

TND - a drunken warble from someone who is capable of so much better. So desperately bad, made worse by the producers' moronic decision to sideline the infinitely superior Surrender. Slow and turgid.

TWINE - Not a patch on Surrender. Somehow, once again, it lacks energy and 'sweep'.

DAD - Has an abundance of energy. Like listening to a broken record while on Es!

Pierce deserved better

Nice to see some love for SURRENDER. It's a terrific, beautifully performed song which I thought should have been the opening theme. TND was okay, but something has always bugged me about that song and I can never put my finger on it.

I like Tina Turner's performance on GE, but the lyrics rather stink up the joint if you ask me.

Goldeneye: Love the vibe and instrumentation on this song, especially those "clicks" toward the beginning when the title is revealed. Classy stuff, and I'm not even a Tina Turner fan. Easily my favorite. (10/10)

Tomorrow Never Dies: Sheryl Crow's singing is obnoxious, and kills a tune that had potential. Surrender is fun though. (4/10) and (8/10)

The World Is Not Enough: Dull, overblown, and unmemorable. Garbage is one of my favorite bands, so this was a shocking disappointment for me. (4/10)

Die Another Day: I like it. The orchestration in the background sounds terrific as it weaves in and out of the song. Very sleek and modern. (8/10)

I don't care for the lyrics of any of the Brosnan era tunes, or for that matter those of almost any Bond title song ever, so I give disproportionate weight to the tunes themselves.

Having said that, GoldenEye is still abysmal in my book, and yet Die Another Day somehow manages to be worse.

So the choice for me was really between Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough. I slightly favor the former, so I went with that, although maybe in the back of my mind I was actually voting for the greatest Bond song that never was, namely, Surrender.

Talk about a powerhouse of a song with a classic, Bondian energy. k.d. lang is also one hell of a vocalist, so much so that, and I hate to say it, she is more enjoyable than the sometimes unpleasantly screeching Shirley Bassey. And the song had reasonable lyrics (gasp!) on top of it all.

I guess for me, Crow's TND is a winner by association...

Funny that I only noticed Goldeneye's lyric flaws when I decided to read this thread. Still it is a very good point, I dislike Lulu's theme of The Man With The Golden Gun for a similar reason (in fact, it is even only just one line: 'His eye may be, on you or me, who will he BANG')

So looking at the songs, The World is Not Enough comes out on top of me, the song's lyrics relate to the film. And suit the mood the film was trying to get with the Elektra-Renardaspect, romantic and haunting. The lyrics convey meaning into the title and the Elektra-Renard relationship contained within the film:

'We know when to kiss,
and we know when to kill,
if we can't have it all,
then nobody will.

The World Is Not Enough,
But it is such a perfect little place to start,
my love.
and if you're strong enough,
together we can take the world apart,
my love'

Along with what is probably Kleinman's best title sequence (though Goldeneye's artistic stylisation of the fall of the Soviet Union would be close) the music is also grand and mysterious and the performance by Shirley Manson is truly the lemon peel in the martini.

I suppose looking at it from this angle, Die Another Day would come second in my list (excluding Surrender, which like TWINE suits its belonging film and makes do with a meaningless title -- Black and Arnold are a good team, they should do the Casino Royale theme) Die Another Day's lyrics have some meaning, the title works well as do the verse lyrics given what is going on during the title sequence. The strings in the background are really my favourite part of the song. But due to Madonna and the Techno-ism of it I can't stand to listen to the travesty. But I think it is only fair I look at all these songs from the same angle.

I can't be bothered to go into any detail on the other ones, Goldeneye has good music, and a few good lines but comes over as a bit confusing. I have a soft bit for Tommorow Never Dies, only because of the twangy guitar in the opening verse, after which the song goes abysmally down hill. I actually enjoy the song up to

'...how you tease, how you leave me to burn'

because up to that point the song had stayed within one mood as being soft and acoustic.

So ultimately I would pick Goldeneye as 3rd and Tommorow Never Dies as 4th though 'Ace of Base's 'The Juvenile' which was supposedly written as 'The Goldeneye' for Goldeneye makes a bit more sense then either, with 'The Juvenile/Goldeneye' seemingly identified as some kind of threat or weapon, 'the key to the end' to quote the song, and the verses seem to refer to why the world can't be like it used to be and the cons of Communism. Still confusing, but makes more sense at times then Goldeneye.

Yes, DanMan was correct in that Madonna's "Die Another Day" was the second biggest Bond hit ever in the UK, after Duran Duran's AVTAK.

Anyway, back to the topic. I voted for Goldeneye.

Goldeneye - reached No. 10 in the UK Top 40. It has a classic Bassey-esque style to it.

TND - reached No. 12 in the UK. Not a great song. I much preferred "Surrender" by kd lang, the theme also featured heavily in the soundtrack of the movie.

TWINE - I think it reached No.11 in the UK.
Very Bondian, but a little boring for me. Easy to sing along to though.

DAD - I actually heard this a few weeks before I saw the movie. I know a few people on here had not heard the song, and so had the shock of their lives in the cinema!! I had already heard it, and didn't really like it but, in the cinema it sounded better and accompanied by the visuals on screen, it works. It debuted at No. 3 in the UK and never went any higher.

The songs during the Brosnan's era are not so good than during an other era. Tina turner performs very well and the Madonna's song is original, but what can i say about Sheryl crow and Garbage. No sorry, there is nothing like the voice of Shirley Bassey ( that's a part of the bond's style).
