But on another note, does anyone know why he has a cat anyway, I can't remember if it was in the novels, anyone?

I agree with freemo. It adds to the myseriousness. It also just looks great, it defines intellect like Alex said.

I'm sure they picked a white cat because a black one would remind people of witches and so forth (not to mention the shedding that comes with dark-furred cats, I have a black cat and it sheds like a snake), and any other color would be rather distracting.

On the basis that there was a rumour that there was a rumour (double decker rumour) that Dr No was going to be a monkey, the theory is not impossible.
