I watched The Life of Brian DVD last night and in the second commentary John Cleese said he wanted George to play Jesus Christ. He thought that "George Lazenby as Jesus Christ" in the credits would have been very exciting. :)

But his idea was rejected by the other.

The IMDb tells the story differently...

John Cleese wanted George Lazenby to play the part of Jesus. He said it would be in his opinion absolutely hilarious, and he wanted the tagline of the film to be "George Lazenby IS Jesus Christ". But when the film's producers contacted Lazenby's agent they were informed that Lazenby was overseas working on another film project and was unavailable. Kenneth Colley was then cast as Jesus.

Then again, I'm sure Cleese himself is the more authoratative source here.

Well, he was recalling it from a fair while ago so he may have remembered it diferently than what actually transpired. But then, IMDb ain't always that accurate anyway.

Who knows.
