I really don´t want to criticize Whedon who is a fantastic writer, director, producer - but isn´t it weird that this film becomes this box office behemoth? It´s as if people just want to see their favorite comic book heroes and have lots of mayhem. Again and again.
I wonder how long it will dominate the box office - or if THE DARK KNIGHT RISES can even compete with it, being a much different beast.
Right now, it seems to me that TDKR is the only film that could begin to challenge THE AVENGERS at the box office. Even SPIDER-MAN does not seem to stand a chance here (and despite this film being better than anything Raimi has managed, it could become the OHMSS of that franchise). And PROMETHEUS is already tracking astonishingly weak with general audiences. MEN IN BLACK 3... well, I don´t think it will actually do much more than a good opening weekend. SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN could connect - but it could also go down the drain like the other SNOW WHITE this year.
I´m sure audiences will want to see a good comedy this summer - but right now, the only one having a shot here seems to be ROCK OF AGES.
Well, I´m still hoping for the rare sleeper hit that actually is a great movie. But which one could it be?
What movie have you seen today?

I think it was deadline which had an article on PROMETHEUS´ tracking "problem".

American Reuinion
Hardly laughed at this. BUT, It was a lovely look into the past. The original trilogy was part of my childhood. So it was nice to see the original cast back together again. Sat with a smile on my face the entire way through.

WE BOUGHT A ZOO
I was so disappointed by the trailer and did not want to see the movie - despite it being directed by Cameron Crowe whose work I like or even love. But the trailer was made so that the film would appear to be just another romantic comedy with the uplifting (a.k.a. unbearably monotone) pop song and the typical elements (love story, cute child, grinning actors).
Boy, am I glad to have given this film a chance on DVD. While it is an uplifting story (hey, nothing wrong about that) it is NOT done in the cheesy way the trailer suggested. In fact, Crowe absolutely undercuts any awkward touchy-feeliness with wit or earned seriousness. Matt Damon actually is poignant here, the child actors are pretty good, and Scarlet Johansson, deglammed and unmannered here, is more than a love interest. The whole film is to be recommended for telling its straight-forward story with enough detours and surprises to make it touching. A gigantic feat since most comedies nowadays are recycled pap.
If you like Crowe, check this out. For me, this is one of the most underrated films of last year.
