From a Scream to a Sigh

I have decided that I would like to do a PDF book of Bond fanfic to post in the fanfic section. And I would like to challenge the FFRC to help me pick out the stories. I would like appoximately five short stories for the book (one I have picked already, but more on that later).

Interesting challenge, Mr. *. We've been working on some longer pieces lately, but I'm sure Tanger can pull some good, upcoming choices out of his magical bag of tricks for us to have a good pool to choose from. I'd want to withdraw myself from rating anything I've written, however; I'm far too critical of my own work :) .

OK let's get this underway. Thanks to Mr. * for setting this challenge. It is somewhat similar to something that I planned but that doesn't matter now.

Let's lay down some rules first.

Firstly, I think it'd be best if we only allow people to vote for a certain number of pieces each and then we pick the ones that got the most votes from those.

Secondly, we WILL NOT be voting for any pieces that have already been published properly such as 'A British Assassin', 'Finders, Keepers', 'Deathstyles of the Rich and Blameless' etc. which, superb as they were, have already attracted attention and have given those writers their chance at getting their work read.
No, this is for all those short stories that are posted on the forums. The ones that hardly anybody bothers to read (except us fan fiction nuts) only because they don't have a cover and aren't done in a pdf. format. This is a chance, to get all these stories into the spotlight and read by all Bond fans.

Hence, this is the challenge:

-Every member from the FFRC must read and pick 3 pieces of fan fiction.
-You can look on CBn, MI6, AJB, fan fiction.net or anywhere else where it might be available
-Everyone must put forward their reasons for choosing their 3 pieces and must put up an argument for why it deserves a place in the collection
-The FFRC members will then vote on the pieces that they think are the best and most deserving
-Once we have the required number of pieces it will then be the responsibility of the person who originally chose them to contact the author and seek permission to use it
-Once this has all been cleared we can decide in which order the pieces will appear in the collection and everyone will put forward ONE title suggestion. We will have a poll to vote or the best one
-Once the collection is complete, the FFRC will review the piece as a whole and then it will be made available for download to all visitors of this site.

This whole process will begin immediately and I think it is fair that this could be done within 2-3 weeks.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let the challenge begin!

Going to be tough, about 95% of them are not finished, and most never will be. But what the hey, I read fast :) .

Well, being mainly a member of AJB, I thought I'd suggest an excellent piece of work from there. The Corners Of Her Mind by frostbitten (John Lam, author of Archangel), which was supposed to have been released a while ago but nothing seemed to happen, and from what I can see is the only unreleased finished story. Still a great short, though it might be released properly on AJB in the future. Link: http://www.ajb007.co...php?topic=17275

Yes, actually this is a bit tougher than I thought it would be, alot of great ones started, but never finished. :)

Later tonight, I'll have to check out AJB and see if I can find some good ones that I'll check out. :)

frostbitten's tale is going to be added to the site(AJB) in the not too distant future.
SiCo hasn't been able to add anything to the fanfiction library due to working hard on finishing his degree. Once we hit the month of May various things will be added to AJB in terms of Fan Fiction. So let me just say everyone that is a member of the FFRC are in for a treat soon. :)

The first of my three recommendations will be Death of a Shadow.

I've just re-scanned all of the offerings at FFn, and this was the one that really stood out once the stories that do not match the Tanger/Mr. * guidelines have been eliminated.

This is going to be very difficult, I feel like an air conditioner that is about to burn out because its filter has been clogged by too much gunk :) .

Ugh, this is difficult to find completed short stories, I've found about 10 or so ones that I liked, but they weren't completed at all. :) Will continue to look though.

I think I'll change the rule to 1 piece per person as this doesn't seem to be working. Also, forget all the putting forward the argument and that and we'll just go to a vote.

So far:

Clinkeroo - Death of a Shadow

That's it? Come one guys, Mr. * is counting on us. What about Xenobia does she have any suggestions.

I'm going to put forward the piece PASSING THROUGH which was written by the member 'al' on these forums. Also the piece by Double-O-Zero 'The Lingering Fate'. That brings the total, including Mr. *'s to 4. If we just get about 3 more then we have enough to look through and pick our favourites.

Ok, this is the list so far:

The Corners Of Her Mind
Death of a Shadow
Passing Through
The Lingering Fate

and I'm going to nominate 'Diamond Cut Diamond' aswell as that was a great little piece that didn't really get the attention it deserved.

Does anybody else have any suggestions?

This is Double-Oh-Zero's revised fanfic, he changed it around a bit, and I am submitting it here as my suggestion, with his permission..

-----

The Lingering Fate: A New Bond FanFiction
by Fraser Lomas

James Bond disliked waiting. He lit his second cigarette of the past hour and contemplated the situation. Bond had been ordered by MI6 to keep a close eye on the conference concerning a revolutionary new treaty to be reviewed and considered by governments of the world that would (supposedly) be of a great benefit to society. The participating superpowers had asked MI6 to designate a few agents to scrutinize interplay during the conference on this, the night, when the treaty was being assessed by world governments. Bond had been assigned the rather mundane task of monitoring the back entrance to the building. Beforehand, MI6 received word that there was a hired assassin who had been assigned by an excluded government to assassinate the representatives and decimate the proposal. And, if the assassin's duty was fulfilled, the agents were to investigate as to why and how it could have happened. Bodyguards were stationed throughout the building, which was a large, high profile executive building. MI6 decided that a government building would be too risky, so they stationed the potential buyers at a venue near MI6 HQ, since it was Britain who was the main contributor to the treaty. Bond now remembered the meeting with M only one day ago, which at this point in time seemed like an eternity.

Without being egotistical have you considered The Designation of Death? Like any writer I wish my work to be read by as wide an audience as possible - -It is an interesting tale that involves what I'd like to think are some classic Bondian moments. Plus the feedback and comments on this short novella can only serve to encourage the development of my writing craft. :)

Of course if you don't want it to be part of your collection - I will not be offended -as I realise that this tale is one that has been written at an early stage in my writing career.

I can also suggest Lazenby88o's Smokeheart -which will be completed soon and ready for release.

Cheers,

Sc1

Sorry scaramanga, but your work has been officially released. This is to get a few little known pieces read.

Mr. * - How did I know you were going to pick Deathstyles? :)

Anyway, I've PM'd Al, the writer of Passing Through and am awaiting his response. I will also PM the other authors who have not yet been contacted and then we can begin putting this baby together!

OK. Deadline's up, for all those who didn't bother to submit a choice; too bad. This is the final list:

Death of a Shadow
Passing Through
The Lingering Fate
Deathstyles of the Rich and Blameless
Diamond Cut Diamond

I've already contacted Al to ask for his permission and also said that he can make some revisions if he wants. Also, I think it might be a nice idea if the authors write little intros to their stories; about what inspired them, why they wrote it and what sort of feel they were aiming for, etc. Not essential but it would be nice and would also help fill it up a bit more.

It is now the responsibilty of the members who nominated the stories to contact the writers and ask their permission to use it. We already have Double-O-Zero's and clinkeroo's so that's two down three to go.

Hmm. I don't think we should use any of the story titles as this might annoy some of the authors and also I don't think they are really suited to being titles of a short story collection.

These are a few titles that I have on my ever growing list of possible Fan Fiction titles I have come up with. As I'm only halfway through my project though I haven't had a use for them so I'll post some up the favourites of mine:

An Eye For A Die
Death On Arrival
Cause Of Death

I don't think they fit though.

Right, I've received confirmation from Alan Hickerson (al) author of PASSING THROUGH that is story can indeed be used. He's also been kind enough as to write this brief forward:

I cobbled this story together from several sources. It was based on a scenario that was developed as part of the James Bond role playing game from the 80's. As gamemaster I led unsuspecting 'OO' agent's through Albuquerque, and Edwards Air Force Base investigating a missing B1 bomber (pre-NSNA, but after the A10 crashed). The glass bubbles came from one of Arthur C. Clarke's books. The top of Sandia Peak is real and based upon personal visits. The plot came from Osama bin Laden's comments saying that he would make America a desert.(Who actually knows what he meant?) Also an article about dirty bombs from CNN.com, was an inspiration, although I can't tell you when I read it.

He stated that the story posted in the forums is in its final form so we can go ahead and use it 'as is'.

How's it going on contacting Craig, Evan? Oh and Mr. Clink, have you yet received permission from the author of Death of a Shadow?

Sorry, me bad. I'm tardy on this one, but I'll hop on it right away. I haven't heard from Mr. Sidor yet, either, but the email didn't bounce so it must be a recent address.
