[Roger Moore's Bad Facelift]

Good interview, but one question kinda threw me off.

Q: It's been said that Roger Moore didn't like or get along with many of his female co-stars. How would you respond to that?

Since when?
I always thought Roger was liked by all his female costars. Lazenby is notorious in Bond fandom for his inability to get along with costar Diana Rigg.
Sean Connery is the big one. He is publicly on record as being degrading to women and in general, just being a male chauvinistic pig.
But Roger?
No way.
Heck, Lois Chiles thought Roger was a riot, Lois Maxwell is on record saying what a lovely man he is, so is Maude Adams, and so is Jane Seymour. All these ladies are on record saying Roger is a great guy, so where did all this "not getting along with female costars" business originate?

Not to come off like some blind zealous Roger Moore fanatic (uh oh. prolly too late for that), but truthfully, I've never read a negative word stated about Roger from any costar (be it male or female).


Nice of ole' Rog to tell Gloria to sign her autograph right besides his, even though she was/is largely an unknown. What a guy. Total class act.



sidenote: (the claims of George and Diana's feuding were largely exagerations according to George in one of my Bond books. Just setting the record straight.)

At the time of the interview there was a story going around in the press about Roger Moore severely disliking most of his female costars. If I remember correctly, it was Lois Maxwell that made the comments for a British publication. I just thought it was appropriate to address the issue.

Very well done Jordan, an interesting view into the film and they way the stars are treated, and how she was affected by the film itself. I was never crazy about her character in the film itself, but when you read about her in articles such as these, it's proven that she's a terrific person.

In a book I have about the Saint series, Roger talks about losing his temper twice on a set, once on the Saint and once with an actress on the Bond series, who he said was impossible to work with. If Roger is saying that, there had to be something wrong with her, because nobody ever has anything bad to say about the man.

If I had to guess, I would think it would have to have been Carole Bouquet. From what I remember, she didn't do any kind of publicity to promote FYEO when it came out.

What! That's a lie. Connery was always liked by his female Bond costars. Sean will always known from the Bond set for being a caring and amusing person, and a practical jokester. Sure, he did say that "Asian women aren't that sexy" during an interview while filming You Only Live Twice, but he was always praised by his fellow Bond peers. Just ask Ursula Andress, Daniela Bianchi, Honor Blackman, Claudine Auger and Jill St. John! All have either have said nice things to him, or became personal friends with him (like Andress and Blackman).

Anyway, I liked the interview. Nice job Jordan. Gloria Hendry has always struck me as an intelligent, outgoing woman; despite playing a nitwit character like Rosie Carver, she did a fine job at glowing up the screen. She still does.

Are you sure he said that in '65? Didn't he say that later on a Barbara Walters interview? Even if he said that, he never hit a fellow female co-star.

I don't see how he is being degrading to women by saying he doesn't find anything particularly wrong with hitting one? This is one of those quotes that most everyone takes wrong. Connery never said he's going to walk around swinging his arms hitting all women. What he meant was that if a woman were out of control and threatening his safety he'd SLAP her. I don't support hitting men or women, but I don't think Connery is being a bastard woman hater by saying it.

Upon some deliberation, I'm retracting what I said.
I realize now my claims are largely unfounded and as hard and as relentlessly as I "google", I just can't seemingly find any info to back up any of which I said.

It's just I have always read about Connery being "difficult" and all my life my Mom regarded him as a chauvinistic pig and so did my old sculpting teacher. I guess I shouldn't have just taken their word for it. Must have had an effect on me as I always had the impression that Sir Sean ean was on record as being blatantly chauvinistic on more then just one occasion.

I always thought Connery had a notorious reputation for being a total chauvinistic pig. Alas, I can't back that up in anyway, shape or form so forget I even said it and I apologise.

Chauvinistic wife beater or not, Connery always remains ok in my book.

Eh, don't worry about it. It's not CBN's fault. CBN didn't write this one up. It's under one of the"intercepted headlines" on the top left corner of the CBN homepage..it's under the article titled, "Bidding on Connery's memoirs".
The writer of the article mitsakenly states that Sean made that quote in a Playboy interview held in '65 and not in the notorious 87 Barbara interview.

Maybe Sean said it on two seperate occasions?

No, Connery made the women hitting statement in a 1965 issue of Playboy. Barbara Walters attacked him for saying it in an interview in 1987 or thereabouts.

I'm just hear to defend Sean Connery. I've read his biography recently (can't wait for his auto!), and learned mant things about him. For one thing, he's not a chauvinistic pig, but he is a tough cookie to work with. He's a difficult man to understand, and I think I admire him for that. He's mysterious, I should say. And I think that people have this sort of cool mystique about it him, and some people might be intidmidated by that.

Very true....Peter Hunt in an interview in STARLOG in the 1980s was the first instance I read where the Director of OHMSS put to rest all those feud rumors between Rigg and Lazenby and said the two actors actually did get along well together. Even in the documentary on the DVD the point is made that the feud was manufactured by the press.

I've been a fan of Ms. Hendry for quite sometime. the first movie I saw her in was "Black Belt Jones." I must have been about 14. I've Been in love with her ever since! Anyway, the article was superb. I didn't realize that she was into alot of sports. Baseball?! Alright Gloria!

Now to the serious side. I thought she was and probably still is a great actress and could have contributed more if Hollywood had given her the real chance that she truly deserved. The movies that they had her portray were characters of little significance. In Live and Let Die for example, the character of Rosie Carver should have never been killed off so soon; because, the character, the novice and bumbling CIA agent, presented a comedy flair. Now, that brought interest to this character and to the story to which made Rosie more appealing. The other movies that Gloria portayed were hookers or the girlfriend of the lead character who either abused her or left her in destitude or Gloria was murdered by the badguys.

If I was an executive producer 30 some years ago, I would have casted her in some very significant roles. I could have seen her doing a remake of The Philadelphia Story. I could have seen her doing a remake of Born Yesterday. I think that Gloria would have been just right to do Romantic comedies; because, she has the class, talent, beauty and the comic appeal to carry the story through; but, on the real, Hollywood was not interested in Black folks doing "Romantic" comedies and very few black actresses were called for leads in an "A" motion picture. There would have been so many contributions that Gloria Hendry could have made. It would have been inevitable that she could have been a major star and could have either been nominated for an Oscar or she could have won and Gloria, it's not too late. Who knows what the future holds. Keep right on pitchin'.

IN ADDITION, GLORIA HAD MENTIONED WHEN SHE HAD TO GO TO ENGLAND TO DO INTERIOR SCENES AND DUBBING AT THE LEGENDARY PINEWOOD STUDIOS, DURING HER STAY, IT WAS DARK AND OVERCAST. MY BROTHER LIVES IN LONDON AND HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING. ALSO, SHE HAD MENTIONED THAT SHE HAS SEMINOLE BLOOD.
OUR FAMILY HAS NATIVE AMERICAN BACKGROUND TOO. IT MAYBE CHAROKEE; I DON'T KNOW.

ANYWAY, I UNDERSTAND THAT GLORIA HAS BEEN DOING A GREAT DEAL OF STAGE WORK. I READ SOMEWHERE THAT SHE WAS IN "A RAISIN IN THE SUN" AND A FEW OTHER WELL NOTED PLAYS. I HOPE TO SEE HER IN ANOTHER MOVIE; NO HORROR STUFF!! A WELL WRITTEN DRAMA OR ROMANTIC COMEDY.

GLORIA HAD MENTIONED HER SKIN. I BELIEVE IT'S COCO. I'M A LITTLE LIGHTER THAN HER; SO, I WOULD BE CARMEL; DARK CARMEL IN THE SUMMER.
African Americans do have a vast background from other ethnic groups. Not to get real deep about it; but, that's why we consist of different hair textures and of many shades, like, that ice cream place with the 32 flavors or is it 30; I forget.

I was surprised to read that Roger didn't have good working relationships with many of his leading ladies, according to the interviewer. I always thought it to be quite the opposite. Except for Grace Jones. I heard he had some trouble with her one time when she was playing loud music and he threw the boombox out the window.
